Re: How to solve the 75 users/device sbs2008 restrictions

On Sat, 30 May 2009 10:51:33 -0400, "Larry Struckmeyer [SBS MVP]" <...@mis-wizards.com

Further to Russ's correct answer....

SBS tops out at a combination of 75 users *and/or* devices. It is confusing
when you first start to think about it, but the explanation is:

Users can connect from any device and need their own license. Desktop,
Laptop, RWW, Mobile Phone, it makes no difference, if you have a user
license you are good to go.

Devices are fixed pieces of metal that can have any number of humans
connect to the SBS.

So, say you want the Administrator and 9 Teachers to connect when on campus
and when away from campus, they would need a User license, or CAL. Count =
10.

Then say you had 65 computers on campus, and 100 or 200 or 300 students. 65
Device licenses would allow for some, any or all the students to use the 65
computers, it doesn't matter which one, to connect to the SBS.

But now you are maxed out. If you decide the Assistant Administrator needs
to connect from the office and from home you will have to reassign one of
the User licenses, or purchase a new User license and decommission one of
the Device licenses, and therefore the piece of metal it was assigned to.

Let's be brutally honest. The box doesn't count. It probably will be
just fine.

True, the box doesn't count. But that doesn't change the licensing
requirements.

Didn't say it didn't. Just being honest that the box doesn't count. A
device cal arrangement will probably work for him

P.S. If I were in charge of that network I'd keep the kids off the domain.

Yup. If they need email, make them contacts and/or give them POP accounts.
And for applications, a TS External Connector license is the way to go,
since they're not employees...
