Thanks for responding, Graham.
The automatically detect language check box has always been deselected. When
a new document is created the default language is English (Australia). When I
check the proofing settings for normal paragraph style, English (Australia)
is part of the style definition. If I change the style set from the default
'Word 2007' to another style set, say 'Formal' the default language changes
to English (US). On checking the normal paragraph style definitions after the
change in style set no proofing settings show. Further, when I go to change
the language back to my preferred language the dialog box always has English
(Australia) and English (US) above the double underline and English (US) is
highlighted. Does that make sense? I appreciate your help.

Hmmm. If you select an alternative version of English it should remain
selected (unless you paste stuff from the internet or elsewhere formatted as
English US). You cannot remove English US from the Word Language dialog as
it is part of a shared dictionary, but you can from Windows Regional
settings. If the setting is not holding, it could reflect a corruption in
the Word data key. Some users have reported problems after automatic
updates. Try deleting or renaming the data key in the registry.
http://www.gmayor.com/my_toolbars_are_missing.htm shows how to locate it -
but remember Word 2007 is Word 12! Delete (or rename) the data key in the
left window of the registry editor (with Word closed).

Graham, I did as you suggested, but unfortunately nothing has changed. Just
to make sure that I was in the right regedit area, I closed regedit then
reopened it to confirm that the data key was deleted. Then I shut the
computer down, rebooted it and opened and closed Word. Again, I opened
regedit and confirmed that the data key had reappeared. Any other ideas?

Word will rebuild the Data key on startup. That's how it's supposed to work.
