The Fans Have Spoken: Save Terminator!
by Jennifer Godwin
Congratulations to our 2009 Save One Show winner, Terminator: The
Sarah Connor Chronicles!
In case you don't know, Save One Show is E!'s annual opportunity for
fans to determine which TV series in danger of cancellation most needs
to be saved. Past winners have included Angel, One Tree Hill and
Veronica Mars. This year, in true killer-cyborg fashion, Terminator
kicked ass, with 53 percent of the final-round vote. Chuck was the
runner-up with 25 percent (#savechuck), followed by Dollhouse with 10
percent, Life with 8 percent and Privileged with 4 percent.
What about Lost Causes We Love? With 34 percent of the vote, Kyle XY
was the winner of our first-ever Lost Causes We Love competition to
determine which totally canceled show should be rescued from oblivion.
Our dearly departed Pushing Daisies was runner-up with 21 percent.
When the results of your 300,000 votes came in, we called up
Terminator show runner and executive producer Josh Friedman with the
good news, and he told us exclusively, "I think I speak for everybody
who works on the show when I say thank you to the fans for their
tireless work to save our show. I think it really goes to show that
there's a really hard-core, emotional, passionate fan base for
Terminator that is larger and more widespread than people give us
credit for."
Read on for the full SOS and Lost Cause results. Plus, find out how
being a Terminator boss is like being Brangelina and, most
importantly, get the exclusive word from Josh about the show's
future...

TERMINATOR TALKS EXCLUSIVELY TO E!
The Word From on High: So what's the latest word from Fox on the
show's future? Josh Friedman, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles'
show runner and executive producer, tell us that the latest news from
the network is this: "They have given me no signs in either direction.
I actually haven't spoken with Fox in weeks. They said they're going
to make all their decisions when they get the pilots in, and I don't
think they have any of their pilots in yet. Things are just starting
to come in from the other shows."
Never Give Up, Never Give In: Definitely hang in there, fans, because
Josh believes there is every hope that the show will get picked up. As
he tells us about Fox's executives and programming bosses (aka the
powers that be), "They're all people, too, and they hear what goes on
[with stuff like Save One Show]. I don't think it's a futile effort at
all for people to continue to fight for the show."
The Drop-Dead Date: When will we know for sure? Says Josh, "My
experience with them in the past is they make their decision on the
day that they have to make their decision and not a day before that."
And that day? That's May 18, the day of the Fox upfront, so mark your
calendars, Terminator fans! We'll be in New York that day to get the
word live, so check back early and often for the latest updates on
Terminator's fate!
As the Man Said: "Fame. Ain't It a Bitch?" In the meantime, don't get
bogged down in the to-and-fro reports in the media about Terminator's
fate. As a show runner with an endangered series, Josh likens the
experience of constantly reading reports about his own future and fate
in the press as being somewhat similar to living life as a Brangelina,
Zanessa or Robsten (who are real people, believe it or not): "I think
it must be what it's like if you were a celebrity couple. You read
stuff. Some of it may be true; some of it is definitely false, and you
could spend time chasing down every jackass opinion and lie, but it
would really take a lot of time."
The Future You're Fighting For: If and when season three does get a
green light, Fox already has a sense of what it's getting. Josh says,
"I haven't pitched a season three yet, but near the end of season two,
I had a conversation with the network about season three just because
they needed to understand the radical change in direction we had gone
through in the finale. So they've know for a while some of my ideas
for season three."
Other Venues? And what if season three doesn't happen? Could it go to
another network? Says Josh, "It's not an expensive show. It's very
average in terms of its costs, but it's more expensive than all cable
shows. There are limited places for a show like this, I think." What
about a comic? Josh says, "Everyone wants to plan for success and hope
that it works out that way, and then if it doesn't, we'll see what
happens."
Shhh...It's a Secret: Either way, there will be no spilling of secrets
about Terminator's third season...yet. "I think the finale speaks for
itself. It's very clear what season three is from watching the
finale," says Josh. (He's kidding. I think.)
Still, there'll be nothing but radio silence on storylines from team
Terminator for the foreseeable future. Says Josh, "I just sent an
email out to all the other writers, and I said that, probably, in the
weeks ahead, many people will ask you either online or in interviews
to talk about season three or 'Can you explain certain things from the
season two finale?' I asked all the writers to just cordially not. I
kind of feel like if we have a season three, people will see it, and
if we don't have a season three, I like people using their own
imagination to see where it goes. And if we don't have it, for me to
kind of put my foot down—this is what this is and this is what that is—
shuts down everyone else's imagination. I think in a situation like
this, it's nice to let people kind of create their own fan fiction
going forward."
Will you guys be satisfied with fan fiction, or do you want the real
thing? Post in the comments, Terminator fans!

Now see, this just shows that you're lazy. A nerd should've figured
out how to get "Chuck" to win. Oh sure "Terminator" has nerd fans too,
but ratings say "Chuck" nerds outnumber them 3:1.

Dayum! That's a good poll.
There oughta' be a rule that the winner gets saved. I'd be a much happier
camper if TSCC, Angel, and Veronica Mars were all still on. I never watched
One Tree Hill, maybe I should.

<...@comcast.net
It's actually not a good poll -- it's *still* subject to vote-pumping
-- ie: refreshing the page so that you can revote again, as fast as
you can. In 2007, at the end of the 2006-2007 season, there was a
very mad rush between fans of Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill and, IIRC,
Arrested Development (which was most sincerely dead at that point).
Gilmore GIrls fans figured out the vote-pumping strategery slightly
earlier than the OTH fans. Gilmore Girls won, but that was after
Alexis Bledel reneged on the verbal agreement to do a 13-episode final
season. One Tree Hill fans were in such a tizzy about it. Which,
IMO, was an overbaked concern. 'Cause IMO, had Bledel not flaked out
on Gg, OTH would have been cancelled even if the SOS poll's results
were reversed.
And E! News conspicuously didn't get a comment from Warner about Gg's
fate when its winning the SOS poll that year was announced. Of
course, part of that was that Kristin had pretty much been banned from
the Gg set over a pretty nasty rumor that she blamed on Lauren Graham
regarding a refused E! fan award that was clearly refused by Amy
Sherman-Palladino rather than by Graham. Best Couple or Best
Chemistry, I forget which, that was labelled "Luke and Lorelai" rather
than "Lorelai and Luke," a distinction that Sherman-Palladino had made
in at least one interview somewhere around s3 or s4, IIRC.
In other words, that Terminator won E!'s Save One Show award really
doesn't mean anything other than that us Chuck fans know that E!'s
Save One Show Award doesn't mean shit. USA Today's Save One Show,
which is a *much* more detailed and controlled and not-pumpable
survey, Chuck won by a landslide across almost all demographics by age
and ethnicity.
And perhaps Nikki Finke's report a few days ago that Chuck's chances
are looking up may have impacted the urgency of Chuck fans to inflate
votes at E as frantically as a few Terminator fans did.
Conversely, I think it's significant that Friedman has little to
report about Terminator's fate. Not just because Fox's upfront won't
be until May 18th -- he's clearly evading the question of the show's
chances entirely, which is significantly different than what Zachary
Levi and Josh Schwartz of Chuck and Roselyn Sanchez of Without A Trace
have been doing in the press, with Levi and Sanchez on the verge of
using the press to lobby for renewal -- okay, in the case of Sanchez,
she's *definitely* lobbying for WaT's renewal. And discussing chances
of the renewal. And Friedman also seems to be trying to soften the
blow by adding mitigating circumstances -- it's expensive by cable
standards, there's not really any other places it could go (thus
implicitly ruling out any thoughts of moving it to Skiffy or even
Spike). They're hoping for success/bracing themselves for failure.
That most of E!'s interview with Friedman is spent talking about the
storylines rather than the fate of the show, much less the *chances*
of renewal is a quite deft feat of talking around the 800-lb.
Terminator in the room. He hasn't pitched season three to the network
yet, which pretty much means that if you're not pitching the next
season yet, you know you're not getting renewed *because* you'd be
already be breaking the stories for the next season by now so that the
arc of the entire next season can be plotted out in time for the
scripting to begin in June for the filming to start toward the end of
July/beginning of August. Conversely, Chuck's Intersect upgrade and
even Josh Schwartz's general comments leading up to the multi-episode
arc that wrapped up Chuck's season *strongly* indicates that Schwartz
has been in active contact with NBC executives to use the arc as the
pitch for next season and, more precisely, using the last 15 minutes
of the season finale as something of a *mini-pilot* for next season.
IMO, regardless of Chuck's fate (likely renewal), Terminator is toast
and what Fox is doing is granting Warner the favor of not announcing
the show's cancellation until May 18th so that the cancellation has
little-to-no impact on the May 21st release of Terminator: Salvation.
Whereby the movie's fate will be clearly determined by word of mouth
about the movie rather than word of mouth about the lack of acting
ability of Lena Headey from the TV Series.

Considering that that year was also the last season of Veronica Mars,
I suspect that if Bledel had stayed with Gg, Veronica Mars would have
been renewed as a placeholder for the second half of the season.
Especially since Gossip Girl would likely have premiered in the
Tuesday 9pm timeslot after Gilmore Girls. VM still probably wouldn't
have gone onto season 5, but nevertheless, that year, OTH was the
closest it's ever been to being a bubble show -- and it was right on
the line.
-- Rob
[1] It's been so glaringly obvious since Gossip Girl started that the
CW has been avoiding putting the new GG in the old Gg slot to avoid
the comparison that IMO, The CW was planning on actually having Gossip
Girl move from 9pm Tuesdays to 8pm Tuesdays at midseason, after the
real Gg series finale would have aired, with Veronica Mars taking the
9pm slot.

The only reason that Arrested Development wasn't in the running, IMO,
is because the show's fate was pretty much decided at midseason, when
Fox pulled it and then a couple of months later (opposite something or
another that was big that I forget now), they dumped the last four
episodes all on one Friday night. I think that's why they have the
second question now -- the one about clearly doomed shows that you
wish would get a reprieve. Pushing Daisies was my choice for that one
this year.

Its a pointless poll since it assumes that the decisions haven't already
been made. Yes, the renewals will be _announced_ in a couple of weeks
but there is no way that the decisions weren't made long before then.
(If nothing else it takes time to prep for those UpFronts and schedule
actors to come promote their shows.)

they wanted Ray Romano (who would've been their next celebrity target)

No, it doesn't -- it means quite the opposite. It means that no
decisions about any given show are set in stone until they're made.
ABC refused to announce any decision regarding AtJ at its upfronts
that year. That doesn't mean that they don't have contingency plans,
but contingency plans are not the decisions themselves. Plans are
plans and decisions are decisions. Plans don't mean shit until
decisions are made to either implement the plans or to implement
*other* plans when teh original plans are thwarted.

I hate to say this, but IMO there'd already be a LOT more creative
synergy between the show and the movie if that were the case. Like,
say, casting the show's Kyle Reese, Jonathan Jackson as the character
in the movie rather than going with Anton Yelchin. Playing up any
sort of a cameo that could possibly exist for Summer Glau, Summer Glau
just plain bein' out there promotin' the hell out of the movie, etc.
Green? Or Purple? C'Mon! You know you have to choose.

Its not easy facing up when your whole world is black
I wanna see it painted, painted black

Well, I know why *I* didn't think of that. I grew up in Livermore,
where the Stones's disastrous Altamont concert took place
And thus, I grew up where the 60's died. It seems strangely
coincidental for me, as a Gilmore Girls fan, that the Maysles Brothers
filmed both the Altamont concert (for "Gimmee Shelter,") AND Grey
Gardens, one of the main influences on (read: primary sources for) the
premise of Gilmore Girls.

Nope, Chuck's chances (maybe/maybe not) have always been better than
TSSC's (dead show airing).
(For values of "always" equalling "the last several months" of course.

I wouldn't be terribly disappointed if Sara Connor is
cancelled.......... after two years it's all too predictable.
The same plot recycled week after week after week............
31 episodes and the last 30 repeated the plot of the first one.
The plot never expanded past the first episode.....................
I also never got Chuck...........it did nothing for me.

You may not have liked the show, but the episode plots were not all the
same, unless you mean the premise of the show (people fighting to keep
machines from taking over) remained the same. The premise didn't change,
but that is true of almost all shows especially over just a two season
period.

Like Gilmore Girls, the first about six episodes or so of Chuck are
very slow, with the show trying to figure out its voice. When Chuck's
original nemesis at Buy More, Harry Tang, leaves, the show picks up a
LOT. Without spoiling anything, at about that time, 6 or 7 episodes
in, when the poorly-conceived character of Harry Tang leaves the show,
Chuck and Sarah's pasts really start to influence their present
storylines and the show goes into hyperdrive. And Morgan gets
waaaaaay less annoying in the second season as he finally starts to
grow up. He still hasn't finished growing up, but he hasn't been
insufferable at all this season.
The episode titles are starting to blur a little bit, so someone
correct me if I'm wrong, but one could go from the pilot all the way
to Chuck Vs. The Italian Hard Salami (Is that the first part of *that*
particular storyline? Yes, I'm being lazy tonight. It's been a long
day.)
Also, at that point, about 6-7-ish episodes in, the Chuck-Sarah
romantic comedy storyline and the spy cases storylines that they work
on together (so not the same storylines), the mischief at the Buy More
and the storyline of the in-progress courtship of Chuck's sister,
Ellie and her Ken-doll, Captain Awesome -- well, all those storylines
just started weaving together in a very Gilmorey way (well, Gilmore
Girls and Guys With Sexy Spies and Electronic Supplies, fo' shizzle.)

I started watching Chuck because Adam Balwin was in it and he
played a great character in Firefly/Serenity - Jayne Cobb. It wasn't the
same character but I liked Sarah (what's NOT to like?), and the rest of the
Buy More cast was pretty funny, and eventually got hooked on the show. I
hope it is renewed for next season.

It's possible. For me, those first few episodes are soooo slow in
part because of the unnecessary presence of Harry Tang as an
antagonist at the Buy More. It's not the actor's fault, IMO, it's a
conceptual problem that they've repeated by bringing in Tony Hale this
season to play the same sort of antagonist ass-kisser at the Buy More.
The Buy Morons have already been established to be their own worst
enemies, so Harry Tang (or Harrytang) and Emmett have always been
redundant, but the show hadn't found its voice yet when Tang was
around.
I got off my lazy butt to look at the actual episode list from the
actual DVD. IMO, after watching the pilot, you can skip to episode 6,
Chuck Vs. The Sandworm (the Halloween episode), which makes Morgan
just slightly more sympathetic, then episode 7, Chuck Vs. the Alma
Mater is virtually a second pilot with a lot of info on how and why
Bryce got Chuck kicked out of Stanford. There are bits and pieces in
episodes 2-5 that fill in certain blanks, but I don't think they're
necessary to watch right off the bat if you don't feel that you
absolutely have to see everything in order. Since you've seen the
pilot (from the sound of it), give episodes 6 and 7 a try -- but if
you only want to give it just one more chance, try episode 7, Chuck
Vs. the Alma Mater. It's really Chuck's pre-Intersect origin story --
and, honest, if you feel like there are some blanks, trust me, you've
missed less information by skipping episodes 2 through 5 than you
think you have.
