SUMMARY: OT: FYI: Friday: New Dog Whisperer: Inside Puppy Mills.

On Fri, 08 May 2009 21:17:33 -0500, Andy <...@b.c

My summation...

The program was tragically informative.

The breeding adults got the worst part of the bargain.

Next, the puppies get no natural parenting. The loss being the
deterioration of the pedigree over generations from mill-borns. I've
witnessed non-parental birth of the mali fowl in VIC, Australia. They lay
their eggs on the ground then bury them under a mound of straw and leave.
The babies have to tunnel out after birth to grow up without parenting but
still know and reproduce their species in the same unknown manner.
Endangered.

Under such extremely disgusting conditions it should be illegal to cage
animals for breeding purposes!!!

Caesar was himself visually shaken. Give the man an Emmy!

The closing of the show said it right. Don't buy! Adopt!

Best,

Andy

if only we could convince the public though... i know so many people
who buy from pet shops to "rescue" the puppy. i canNOT get it through
their fat heads that by buying that puppy, they are condemning more
to be bred. don't buy from pet stores! find a breeder. a GOOD breeder
will always stand behind his dogs. you should get a lifetime return
guarantee, for *any* reason you might not be able to keep the dog a
good breeder will take it back (i have a mutt pup from a breeder. he
was an accident, but he came with the same guarantees her purebred
dogs do. he cost me the price of his first vet visit & puppy shots,
which i'd be paying anyway).

where'd you get that idea? i got him as a 9 week old puppy. of course
he wasn't neutered yet! he was neutered at 4 months.
*all* my dogs(4) & cats(7) are neutered. most are rescues, with the
exception of Scout (the puppy i've been talking about) & Peanut, my
son's Boston Terrier that was a Christmas present from my brother.
because i have 4 dogs, i have a 'kennel license' from my town
(rather than individual licenses for each dog). this allows us to
foster dogs waiting for permanent placement, as well.

lee,

About 1/2 mile from the house is an ASPCA. I've visited it once. On a still
and quiet day I can hear the dogs barking from my house.

There's no such problem as street dogs in my town though I HAVE seen them
elsewhere. They are a different issue altogether but actually better off,
in a sad/twisted sense, imho.

After losing my Annabelle, my 13 year old Jack Russell terrier some 12+
years ago, my alpha dog days are gone. <sniffle

Sorry, the street dogs issue was from another episode earlier in the day
("Big man's life long fear of dogs", my description).

I'm a big fan of the program since I got digital cable and the NatGeo channel
last October.

What happened to Annabelle? JRTs are a long-lived breed - most from the
line that my Cooper came from made it well past the 15 year mark that
I've come to expect with border collies. 18, 19, 20 years... For a
well-bred, healthy jack, 13 is only late middle age. Our club had a jrt
that continued racing until he was 15.

Kathleen,

I lost Annabelle in my divorce.

The Ex moved into town 2 miles away.

A few months after, the Ex got sloppy and Annabelle got loose.

She was run over crossing the highway only a quarter of a mile from my house,
trying to come home to me.

Oh, no... My daughter and her friend, who also has a jrt, were driving
home one evening and spotted a loose jrt running down the side of the
two-lane highway they were on. By the time they were able to stop and
circle back he'd already been hit.

His injuries were obviously not survivable but he was still breathing so
they bundled him into the truck and rushed him to the emergency clinic.
He'd been chipped, the contact info was up-to-date. His owner was
called and she raced to the office in time to say goodbye and give
permission for the final injection.

He'd dug his way under the fence. His owners were recently divorced and
he was on his way home to his old house.
