While I've never understood why a lot of blacks hated Elvis (I've heard the
whole "white man trying to sound black" argument, and still don't get it.
Does it have to do with job security or something? Is having a little funk
and soul somehow a racial trait?) I understand even less how Jackson is so
well revered despite sounding kinda black-ish, but trying his best to look
white.

You can start understanding with the fact that the above statement isn't
true (Public Enemy notwithstanding). A lot of blacks don't get why Elvis
was such a big deal. Which is not the same as hate. Those who do
espouse hatred towards The King tend to fall into two camps: The smaller
camp truly believes in "Elvis stole from us" ideal. Never mind that
Elvis never claimed to be doing anything but singing like black folks.
He gave credit to his influences whenver he could. Don't mistake Elvis
for his bastard manager, Col. Parker.
The second camp (The larger one) falls into the "True Black = Fuck
Whitey" category. The young and ignorant. Or those that were and never
grew out of it. Those who claim that Elvis was a racist (wrong) and that
he stole song after song from black artists (Never mind that most of them
couldn't name five Elvis songs if you spotted them Love Me Tender, Hound
Dog, and Jailhouse Rock).
That probably why you never understood: Not true.
