Obama and his economic team know what kind of stimulus plan has the

His hair is accurately combed back, his manners are polished and his

I realize that the case could go on appeal and it's therefore not to give
your version of the facts. However, this may be the first time in history I
have asked someone to tell me about a legal case and the answer was a
fashion statement. Hilarious

btw -- my impression is that men all dress alike. and even more so in the
business context

A week before you told us that you were going to Munich, I decided to take
advantage of the predicted break in the weather to visit the Corcoran Art
Gallery. http://www.corcoran.org/index.asp
They are repairing their roof so the gallery itself is closed

I watched a musical performance that was thus described on their website
http://events.nbcwashington.com/washington-dc/events/show/85875541-musical-afte rnoon-series-auryn-quartet#
Considered one of the foremost string quartets of its generation for more
than two decades, the Auryn Quartet has performed in most of the major music
centers of the world. The quartet studied with the Amadeus Quartet in
Cologne as well as with the Guarneri Quartet at the University of Maryland,
going on to win first prizes at the prestigious ARD Competition in Munich
and the International String Quartet Competition in Portsmouth. Based in
Germany, the ensemble regularly tours Europe and North America and is the
quartet-in-residence at the Schubert & Schubert Festival at Georgetown
University. Since 2000, the Auryn Quartet has recorded exclusively for the
German label Tacet, and their complete cycle of Franz Schubert's quartets
was recently awarded the Diapason d'Or (France) and the German Record
Reviewers Prize.
Program: Beethoven, String Quartet in D Major, Op. 18 No. 3; String Quartet
in E-flat Major, Op. 127; String Quartet in C Major, Op. 59, No. 3
"Razumovsky."

The program pamphlet we received at the time of the show said things such as
Beethoven exhibits the German concept of Schein.
Does this mean the same thing as the English concept of "shine"?

The bio in the pamphlet said
"This superb ensemble from Cologne simply came on stage and played,
immediately radiating a palpable joy in music-making"--Sunday Herald,
Edinburgh

I am not entirely sure one can say this about the entire group.

The cello player Andreas Arndt, however, could be blamed for all the joy

The viola and the two violins were a lot more serious.
One of them started every movement with a violent paroxysm. Sometimes I
felt he was just play acting for the audience to make it seem his gestures
were extraordinary. But Arndt really was enjoyable to watch. He also for
some reason seemed like a happy copilot. Don't ask why

They really were good too. It has to be one of the very few times I have
been at a show where I haven't started jonesing for my laptop.

The audience was old, just plain old. Very little diversity on any front.
There were two younger ladies (40) sitting behind me who conversed before
the show. They talked about a mutual friend's pregnancy. The one asked the
other: what is she having. I wanted to say A BABY.

They had a small meet the artist reception after.
I thought perhaps it would be a good time to meet someone, just anyone from
the area.
And get a bite to eat.
The oldsters cleaned out all the food before I got a chance to even get my
bearings. There might not have been a lot there to begin with. But there
wasn't enough when I got there, and the people just wouldn't move over to
let anyone get a bite.
I guess that now that their stock brokers made-off with their money, all
they can afford is post music performance reception food.
I will note of course that all the students from the Corcoran who were
assisting at the concert were very friendly.
The audience members, however, were not. They were unapproachable during
the reception. I mention this because apparently if you are a member of
their organization, MAS, you get less expensive tickets. However, no one
from their organization made any attempts to try and interact with me as a
newcomer. Their body language was awful, standing in a way to discourage
approach or interaction. They hogged not just the food but also the
performers such that the hope for merely saying hello or thank you became
impossible. The president of the association stood during the performance
and introduced herself to the audience. But once we got to the reception
hall, she did absolutely nothing to acknowledge unfamiliar faces.

Thus, while the music was outstanding, the performance hall Armand Hammer
Theater was comfortable and perfect acoustically, but other things were not
to my liking.

I had forgotten to wish all the world a happy Asian New Year last week

Chinese New Year: A royal spread
By Dianna Marder

Inquirer Food Columnist

Margaret Kuo was raised in a culture where culinary arts were regarded on a
level with music and literature, with recipes treasured as works of art.
Her father was a senator from Manchuria who welcomed some of China's most
prominent people into his home for banquets, especially to celebrate the new
year. Even after World War II, when the Communists gained power and her
family emigrated to Taiwan, Kuo says, the new year was greeted with
elaborate meals at which elders and ancestors were honored.

That's one reason Kuo, who had a successful career as a chemist in the
United States, eventually went into the restaurant business here. And it
explains why she was intent on bringing the Chinese-style banquet to our
shores.

Kuo, now with four restaurants under her watchful eyes, is regarded by many
as the doyenne of the royal banquet, traditionally held at the Chinese New
Year.

The new year holiday, marking 2009 as the Year of the Ox, began Sunday and
extends until Feb. 9. But Kuo's banquets will continue through February and
some area restaurants from Chinatown to the Main Line will offer banquet
menus well into April.

For Kuo, a banquet means an elaborate meal, artfully prepared, using highly
prized ingredients served with propriety as a display of respect for honored
guests.

A banquet is a departure from some everyday eating customs and an
exaggeration of others. At everyday Chinese meals, rice takes center stage
and the dishes are served all at once, but a banquet displays the host's
generosity and prosperity, so the food is brought in successive bountiful
courses.

Guest and host treat each other with great deference. Who enters the room
first is as important as where one sits in proximity to the kitchen door, a
humble spot.

And all that, the menu and the manners, are bumped up a notch or two for the
New Year's celebration.

"New Year's in China," Kuo says, "is like Christmas here."

Solving Lviv's city centre puzzle
13 January, 2009

By Emily Cadman

The historic city centre of Lviv in Ukraine , a Unesco world heritage site,
has a new quirky tourist attraction - this giant crossword puzzle.

Mounted on the entire side of a residential block, the puzzle is over 30
metres high.

The local tourist board is encouraging visitors to collect and decipher the
clues for the puzzle, which are scattered around the city's major landmark
and attractions.

Each evening, fluorescent letters placed inside every square light up to
reveal the solution.

This unusual addition to Lviv's cityscape - which encompasses 13th century,
baroque, renaissance and Soviet era architecture - has already proved
popular online, and it remains to be seen whether it boosts tourism.

A word of warning for English readers, though: the clues are in the Cyrillic
alphabet.

Moneygall is a small village in County Offaly, Ireland. It has a
population of approximately 300 people, has a Roman Catholic church,
five shops, a post office, a national school, a police station and two
pubs.

President-elect of the United States Barack Obama's great-great-great
grandfather, Falmouth Kearney, emigrated from Moneygall to New York
City at the age of 19 in 1850 and eventually resettled in Tipton
County, Indiana. Kearney's father had been the village shoemaker, then
a wealthy skilled trade.

Why is Obama Reluctant to Kill
the Zombie Banks Threatening Our Economy?
(Arianna | Huffington Post)

FrankKalder comment:

That's very accurately staged how the battle line has been drawn on
the backdrop of those bankers' self-interests on both sides. Sure,
unlike the conflict over the stimulus package, this is not an
ideological fight, as Arianna sharply focuses it, "this is a battle
between the status quo and the future, between the interests of the
financial/lobbying establishment and the public interest".

I do, in particular, highly appreciate the following synopsis:

a) Geithner's big problem is acting as if the crisis the US and the
rest of the world are facing is a crisis of liquidity when, in fact,
it's a crisis of insolvency.

b) Huffpost's Ann Pettifor: "Much of Wall Street is effectively
insolvent. It's not that these banks lack cash or capital -- it's just
that they're never going to meet all their financial liabilities --
i.e. repay their debts. Ever."

Hopefully Barack Obama will understand what's on stake as well for the
United States of America and the global economy as for himself
politically. And, indeed, the "toxic" thinking has to be cleaned up as
much as those "shabby" assets.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY !

From Prof. Hans-Armin Weirich on “discussion”:

. Threatened US Economy
Yeah, this seems to fit very well.
. General Blog
This number refers to the overall German Haplifnet and not, of course,
to the specific new blog as such.
. Gleanings

Well, I'll try to report and comment a bit on it now.
There were basically two forum situations involved (within Burda
Media).

a) With regard to a discussion on ‘What’s objective reality?’
initiated by a Christian fundamentalist who gave persistently rather
weird inputs at the philosophy forum such as in his post of March 9,
2008, 12:43,

http://bb.focus.de/focus/t=Was+ist+objektive+Realitaet-97498&postdays=0&postord er=asc&start=105

I had initiated “Die philosophische Farce”.
http://bb.focus.de/focus/f=Philosophen+Forum-3&topicdays=0&start=30

The defendant then claimed I had insulted those Christians therein.

b) Due to the hassling by some of the so-called 7 rats of “The Rat
Pack ... Club”, particularly the aggressive cyber-stalking by one
user, I had tried to ignore this as much as I could. Only occasionally
I intervened. But, all of a sudden, I was kicked out of the system,
and the forum’s administrator was not willing to tell me a specific
reason for having locked my account.

Only by suing the company

http://www.focus.de/intern/intern/impressum_aid_145454.html

I got a number of explanations which were, of course, unsatisfying.
Consequently I countered then specifically in my various written
submissions.

The defendant’s lawyer http://www.kanzlei-prof-schweizer.de also
claimed I had inappropriately mentioned that company’s name on my
private homepage http://www.haplif.de (at the bottom) and in the German Press
Association profil http://tinyurl.com/d9mhlz in a way, it may imply,
I would write articles for the Focus magazine (print). Yet, already
prior to the negotiation at court on Feb 10, I had added the word
“online” at that press page’s profile.

On my homepage I had previously mentioned “Beiträge”, only. I added
then also “Online” and further “...-Forum” in order to make them
happy, although this was not requested by the judge in particular.

The defendant was sentenced to remove the account locking (which was
immediately fulfilled on Feb 10, afternoon).

The judge’s opinion has been that they were not entitled to rigorously
lock my account, i.e., to terminate the agreement without notice. It
was established that there has been an agreement although the
defendant’s lawyer argued vehemently against it.

That’s right! I had also discussed this aspect informatively with my

For this reason no lawyer would want to work on such a case. A lot of
time to be invested and only a little revenue to be expected.

Yes! And, moreover, it’s been a necessity to getting fully

This is a pretty good movie. If you don't like Michael Moore or are overly
conservative, don't watch. But it's both entertaining and sympathy
inducing.
Perhaps a few years ago, this story would have annoyed Americans. But in
light of the collapse of the financial industry, it is certain to bring new
resonance to the problem. Particularly as the people in the age group that
got so spoiled by all the luxury of the past years will age and get more and
more populous. Americans are notorious for pretending that nothing in the
country is socialized. As there are fewer medical resources to go round,
they will probably change their demeanor with regard to socialized medicine.
The Cuban, Canadian and French systems are profiled. I'm not sure if a
Michael Moore like film maker couldn't have found equally compelling stories
about failures in those systems.

It's Time to Treat America's Homeowners as Well
as We've Been Treating Wall Street's Bankers
(Arianna | Huffington Post)

FrankKalder comment:

That's tremendous: 10,000 US citizens are currently going into
foreclosure every day and, moreover, 2.3 million homeowners had faced
such proceedings last year, according to the AP report, an 81 percent
increase from 2007, and analysts say that number could soar as high as
10 million in the coming years, depending on the severity of the
recession. And the amount of attention given to the 'foreclosure
catastrophe' part would barely rate a sliver as far as the attention
given both by the government and by the media is concerned.

Yes, Arianna, it's time to start treating America's homeowners as well
as Wall Street's bankers have been treated. I appreciate Huffpost's
intention to spotlight overall pertinent stories of those claimants
due to the housing crisis.
