Very sad.

I can say with honesty that 'On the buses' was exactly what the job was in
the '70s.
I was both a conductor and driver in the '70s and great fun it was,
destroyed overnight by 'OMO'.

And much-loved.

Was also in The Rag Trade and The Valiant Varneys and a TV comedy play from
the mid-60s about 'keeping up with the Joneses'...

'This is our colour telly - all we need now is the programmes - thay go in
it!'.

And as Quantum breaks British box office records, On the Buses (the film)
did that in 1971!

irreplacable friend.

No. Didn't even cry when my mother died, so some unknown

Nice chap by all accounts, shame his radio show was unlistenable.

With Peel I was genuinely shocked at the news. He'd been like some
kindly uncle twice removed who had this great record collection and
would play it to you. He widened my musical tastes way beyond what
they might have been if he'd not been on radio.

I can remember being sat at my desk when it came on the radio news
and my first thought were, 'Oh his poor wife.' and rather stupidly
'Who is going to play The Fall now?'

I didn't cry but was saddened when Freddie Mercury died, again Queen
had been a musical constant in my life, in stark contrast to my
hatred for MOR/AOR rock.

So far as I know Charlotte Coleman is still around

Had Douglas Adams not turned into a fitness freak and continued
propping up the BBC club's bar wearing boots anchored down with
plenty of sauce, he might still be with us.

I first met him circa 1981 in Union House, Shepherds Bush, where we
shared a corridor. I was languishing in the Blake's 7 office, he was
in the Dr Who office next door under the then Dr Who producer, the
appalling Nathan-Turner. I recall contributing to the Nathan Turner
hit contract fund which, whenever it reached a fiver, usually got
splurged in a Shepherds Bush pub with Nathan Turner copping the
lion's share and me only getting the odd Coke.

Douglas Adams and I also shared an editor for a while, a Miss Freeman
(I can't recall her first name). He stayed loyal to her and switched
publishers to stay with her when she moved, whereas I tended to stay
loyal to one publisher and had a procession of bedable editors as a
result. Some of the women were okay, too.

We were both early users of minicomputers as word-crunchers. Douglas
went the Mac route which enabled him to delivery camera- ready copy
to his publishers because he was always behind on delivery dates. I
was struggling with a TRS-80, and later an IBM XT. It wasn't until
around 1985 that Rank's "Ventura" type-setting program for the PC
appeared thus enabling me to do the same. It crawled whereas DA's Mac
flew.

At the time I had written about four books while he was writing his
first. My mandatory biographical note at the front of my books merely
said: "James Follett is married, has two children, and lives in
Surrey with several cats". When "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy"
first appeared in hardback, DA gave me a copy and shambled off with
much sniggering. I opened it and read: "Douglas Adams is unmarried,
doesn't live in Surrey, doesn't have any children, and loathes cats."

It came to me in a blinding flash of inspiration whilst watching a rerun
of Sylvester McCoy completely screwing the role up. I suddenly saw what
would happen if Patrick Troughton had attempted to do a really physical
characterisation. Which reminded me of somebody. It then took a couple of
months to work out who.

The Doctor is, on the whole, getting younger. However David Tennant is
already stretched to combine a young body and a very old mind. There
really aren't many actors who are capable of taking it a step beyond.
Most of them aren't likely to consider even one series as the Doctor.
Kulvinder Ghir might be chuffed enough to do it for a few series.

If you've only seen him in Goodness Gracious Me, be assured he's proven
on stage that he can hold a major role with as much flair as he shows in
short sketches.
