Can any noir fiction be considered literary fiction?
If Highsmith is technically "noir" - and she was highly lauded, especially in Europe along these lines - then your definition very much jibes with her material. As far as this being a working description for the other authors on your page, I would have to say I don't know, but I find it an intriguing definition. The only other thing I would bring up would be the issue of prose style and if or how that relates to defining your category.

What does Noir mean to you?
Well, I have an idea in my head of what is and isn't, but I think every fan develops that. Usually once you familiarize yourself with the classics of the genre, you can tell what is or isn't, at least in your mind, when you see it.

Book Noir?
Yes, they're called hard-boiled detective novels. Look up anything by Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammett.
