Sample Chatter Excerpts
Can any noir fiction be considered literary fiction?
If Highsmith is technically "noir" - and she was highly lauded, especially in Europe along these lines - then your definition very much jibes with her material. As far as this being a working description for the other authors on your page, I would have to say I don't know, but I find it an intriguing definition. The only other thing I would bring up would be the issue of prose style and if or how that relates to defining your category. source
What does Noir mean to you?
Well, I have an idea in my head of what is and isn't, but I think every fan develops that. Usually once you familiarize yourself with the classics of the genre, you can tell what is or isn't, at least in your mind, when you see it. source
First film-noir to watch?
M and the Third Man are good places to start for classic film noir. You really can't go wrong with anything featuring Bogart. source
Book Noir?
Yes, they're called hard-boiled detective novels. Look up anything by Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammett. source
Favorite film noir from the past 20 years?
What film noir style movies does everyone recommend from the past 20 years? My personal favorite is LA Confidential, a great homage to the hardboiled films of the era. source
