Afireinside Member Since: Jan 11, 2007 Hey guys! I just need to know what the difference is between white and pink noise, or better yet, what type of noise I should use to eq a room. Thanks! Herb Utsmelz Ne'er ate 'er Member Since: Apr 05, 2006

Pink noise is weighted to accommodate the frequency response of the human ear.
It's called "white" because, like light, it contains all wavelenghts .
White noise is random noise that includes all frequencies of the audio spectrum.

My Inspiron 300m is making a loud noise and I think it's coming from the fan. Is there a way to confirm or verify where the noise is coming from?

If it does, identify the spot and try to see if there is anything and see if the noise speeds up -- if so....
If the laptop is often overheating places until the noise varies.
The most common source of laptop noise are misaligned fans.

Spur gear noise!? Tranny noise!? My spur gear has "in and out" movement, about 3/4 of a mm. The entire shaft though, so tightening the screw won't do anything. It sounds like it's not spinning around it's axis properly. When the car has no motor hooked...

Hi,
I am looking for inputs on an image noise filter method. A 9-pixel median filter does not work very well with dense noise. Noise is periodic (periods of 50 lines) and additive.
Thanks, Bi

In the Fourier domain? If the noise is periodic then with any luck your noise will appear as a pair then transform back to real space and your periodic noise should be gone..

I'm aware that the best option for noise cancelling is to buy myself a pair of noise cancelling headphones...
But is there any software available that would use the pc mic and headphones to block background noise?

There are basically two methods for noise ....
It's not actually noise cancelling but Chatterblocker can help you mask/ignore external sounds.
It's interesting, but has no solution.
See this article : Noise Cancelling in Software? .

I have a PC that produces audible noise/screeching correlated to network activity. The noise is high-pitched and somewhat difficult to locate, however it seems to be coming from the power supply. It's clearly audible over the PSU and CPU fan noise. Has...

I would also be different components making electrical....
I have heard of something similar.
But according to your information, this might be a noise may be weaken leading to generate a high frequency noise.
The cause cannot be diagnosed remotely.

Well many of you may recognize that I'm the guy that had the noisy direct vent motors on my Alaska Stoker Changing 3 model. I have resolved that issue this season with a shroud that protects the sides and top of the motor from dust. Works like a charm...

What measures can be taken to reduce the sound noise levels coming from computers (i.e. sound noise from fans, hard drives etc.) in an office space setting or home setting?

Answer Snippets (Read the full thread at serverfault):
If you don't care about desktop effects (office users normally shouldn't) you can lower noise levels temperature and alter speeds accordingly....
To reduce hard disk noise you can get.
Water cooling (with a decent pump) or reduce the fan speed .

For example:
#!/bin/sh echo "\a\a\a"
The above example will print the BEL character... .
You can echo the BEL character, perhaps multiple times, from your build script .
What about printing the BEL character (0x07)? It should make a ping!/beep! on the terminal .

Since you're a Windows user, I can't help you as much with audio editing.
