In Microsoft's words :
Assigning Nothing to a variable sets....
If it's a reference type, it will really be set to Nothing (null value).
Type (like Integer, Double, etc.) setting the variable to Nothing will set it to the default value.

I suppose Nothing could accept any method, and perform a standard operation on all of them is warning the programmer that a type he most likely didn't want, Nothing , got inferred somehow at a certain point in the code.

For example Dim aInt as Integer should have the value as nothing instead of 0.

dim aInt as Nullable(of Integer .
In vb.net - Nullable(Of Integer) (or Short, Byte)
Integer cannot be "nothing".
You'll have to use a nullable type.
