If you log an IP address, you'll have problems with corporate users which usually stay behind a proxy, so everyone seems to have same IP .
As you said, you'll need to handle robot behavior.

Use a META REFRESH tag in the head....
You could reference a download page from your thank you page using an IFrame
<iframe src="DownloadFile.aspx" style="display:none;" />
In this case, DownloadFile.aspx would have the code behind from your example .

The try: method does not need to be global — it can be used in any scope and so modules can be "lazy-loaded" at runtime .

I would stick with AVG as it is free, has never let anything by, and is light-weight, which Micro$oft will never allow .
Use that and run Malware Bytes once a week and you're in good shape .
I've had great success with AVIRA.
Use neither.

It starts to get a bit trickier after that for states .
Try here
http://www.bing.com/search?q=iso+country+codes will start you on a somewhat standard list of countries .
