I've seen several Rothko paintings too - in London and New York. I find them breathtaking and can get lost in them. I have some large prints but the detail of the colour layers is lost due to scaling down - the real paintings ...

And yet their detractors want them to paint pretty pictures in the style of the 17th, 18th and 19th, which makes painting pretty flowers a pointless activity to some artists.

The same reverence that Turner does now? A painting isn't art in the same way a book isn't art.
