Bed or Rothko painting is beauty or the emporer's new cloths is in the eye of the beholder.
Great posts from Orpheus I've seen several Rothko paintings too - in London and New York. I find them breathtaking and can get lost in them. I have some large prints but the detail of the colour layers is lost due to scaling down - the real paintings ...

There's no comparison between a figurative, detailed painting and an abstract study in colour & shape.

Now explain to me how I'm to see that in a Rothko you have people going 'pff my 3yr old can... .
It's almost a form of reductionism.
It's when you go up close to them and look at the painting come apart of paint.

There are others, etc., etc., etc.
And yet their detractors want them to paint pretty pictures in the style of the 17th, 18th and 19th, which makes painting pretty flowers a pointless activity to some artists.

Where.
A painting is just a collection of pigments on canvas, a book is just a collection of word on paper.
The same reverence that Turner does now? A painting isn't art in the same way a book isn't art.
