document gets really slow to refresh and enter data. Painfully slow.

If deleting the Data key doesn't help, you could try deleting the whole Word
key in the registry (with Word closed of course).

What are you using as your email client? If Word opens DOCs OK, then it
suggests that maybe mail.dot is corrupt (it should be located in the same
folder as normal.dot)....
