What exactly does the word patch mean when refering to 'submitting a patch'?
I've seen this used a lot, especially in the open source world. What what does it mean and what exactly is involved in submitting a patch?

For example:
Let's say;
The patch file might look like this:
Index: test.php --- test.php (revision 40) +++ test.php (working copy) @@ -3,7 +3,7 @@ <?php - $foo....
Applied to someone else's copy of the source code using the patch command.

I'm not an AIX guru I've been assigned to patch my systems up to the latest patch level.
First, where do I get the patches for AIX 5.1 and 5.3?
Second, how are they generally installed (i.e. commands and procedures).
Thanks for your help.

You ....
It's a bunch of very good documentations provided by IBM .
You can find informations about all this in a Redbook .
You find the official patches here: http://www-933.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/
I recommend the patching through SMIT.

I've got eight commits on a branch that I'd like to email to some people who aren't git enlightened, yet. So far, everything I do either gives me 8 patch files, or starts giving me patch files for every commit in the branch's history, since the beginning...

If you want your 8 delivery X git checkout delivery git merge master git format-patch HEAD
That way, you only have one changed, 2 insertions(+), 0 deletions....
As you already know, a git format-patch -8 HEAD will give you eight patches.

Lexicals....
Evil, but it works.
You can obtain lexicals with the PadWalker module.
A lexical variable is by definition limited to its lexical scope, in other words, the block it is in .
The thing you're mistaken in is that they are not package scoped .

I've tried my servers and they don't see the patches that Microsoft has released. Usually Windows Update automatically installs them on Wednesday, so it must be something late in the day -- yet I can't find this info anywhere on either the Wikipedia page...

If you are worried about missing them, Microsoft does have various security advisory notifcation methods available: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/dd252948.aspx

When creating a patch with the "patch" tool or with the built in "patch"-functionality in svn and then applying it to a source tree, is there any way to easily step back from the applied patch to the previous version?

Answer Snippets (Read the full thread at stackoverflow):
Apply the patch again in reverse (for example patch -R switch)..
Svn revert? You can revert to the previous revision (before the patch was applied).

I am trying to determine patch levels and how long some Solaris machines have been without patching in order to support triaging which systems to patch first. How can I determine the last time a Solaris machine was patched?

I dunno about determinng the last time a solaris box was patched, but you can work out the patch with 'uname -a' which kernel patch are you currently using (it's the number -XX that shows up) then start comparing the kernel patches....
