I would install PhotoShop. I really would. But Adobe seems to insist on me also having Adobe Bridge, and Adobe Updater, and something else — about a gigabyte of software I don’t want gumming up my system.
But I still want to be able to extract the layers...

On the Mac, Pixelmator can access the layers in PhotoShop files..
Of Photoshop but I'm not sure it allows you to upload and edit PSDs.

I don't want to use Mac or Windows at work but I have a lot of work in Photoshop when I have to create an HTML page from a Photoshop design.
What is the best way to use Photoshop CS3 in Linux, Wine, virtualization, ... ???

As already said, Wine doesn't work with CS3 and after giving Photoshop....
Wine has been a bit flaky with me before when going with Photoshop (keyboard shortcuts behaved to suck it up and use Windows or OSX if you want to use Photoshop.

I just made the full transition to Debian from Windows XP at work ( I mainly do front end but I do some slicing/design as well ), I'm wondering if anyone else has made the Photoshop to Gimp switch, and how compatible is Gimp with Photoshop saved psd's...

When they give me a copy of their PSDs for further editing, I end up Photoshop..
In my experience, Photoshop runs terrible in a VM, especially the newest which uses GPU acceleration doing stuff on Photoshop.

I need Photoshop for my iPhone game development and I use Mac OS X.
All I have to do actually is to cut out Objects from JPEGs and convert them into an PNG with alpthatransparency for the iPhone, so that they look nice in my layers.
But I don't understand...

In this case....
Version 7 was released for a much older version of OS X when when macs shipped with power pc processors .
This pretty much requires you to use Photoshop CS3 (which is, if the version numbering were consistent, Photoshop 10).

Ss there anyway to select a section of an image in Photoshop and drag it to resize. You can do this in Microsoft Word and other programs, so there must be way to drag and resize in Photoshop.

When you....
This will bring up the transformation tools you want.
Use the marquee tool (hotkey M) to select the portion of the image you want to resize, then use the Transformation tool hotkey: Ctrl+T (somewhere in the edit menu, but I always use hotkeys) .
