I've used SMF in the past and while I liked it I didn't really like the Admin CP.
The field seems to be rather cluttered these days with too much variety for me to make a quick and easy decision. So I've started this thread with the hopes of finding out...

I helping to build a new website that will focus in technical support for elderly people.
phpbb3 is great, but we fear that the forum will be a bit intimidating for the inexperienced users, and we are not sure that they will use all the functions available...

This has absolutely nothing to do with joe.to.
This also has nothing do with features, Only the style, how it looks and feels as you use the software as a non-admin. Assume that either way all the features would be ripped out and replaced with something...

I would suggest MyBB over SMF or phpBB for the qualities that youI alway used phpbb, really secure although the permission system can be hard to understand sometime but once everything is....
With phpBB has also been positive.

Previous admin convert back to SMF and none of the images are showing in previous posts on the forum. If I click on edit and the save the post will show the pictures. Thats a lot of threads to go through. Is there any way to correct this?

phpBB heeft geen enkele kritisch belangrijkste verschil is - volgens mij - dat phpBB veiliger is qua beveiligingslekken.
Is moeilijk gezien de nog korte levensduur van SMF 2.

Buenas, estuve probando phpbb y smf, lo que más me extrañó es que ni siquiera traen urls amigables predefinidas.
¿Creen que siguen siendo buenas alternativas y la gente sigue queriendo usarlo? ¿Querrán seguir creando sitios con ellos?

Well everybody I seem to talk to tells me they hate Simple Machines, I can't get my head around why though... It seems ok, definatly not as bad as people make out.

I need to run a simple forum. I have limited control of the box, so I need something with the same runtime requirements as phpBB.
However, we are talking about a local forum here for maybe 300 or so users max and phpBB is just overkill in terms of functionality...

Everything works perfectly out, it doesn't require much for resources, ... .
phpBB may be overkill for you but so whatI just run a VM with phpBB installed using Turnkey Linux .
SimpleMachines Forum (SMF) seems pretty good.
