I've successfully installed and configured PHPList 2.10.17. It's all working including sending e-mails.
The only thing I can't get to work is the public pages - they don't seem to be generating at all.

Another alternative, would be to create aliases that send to the whole shooting notifications and would create noticeable lag to send them at creation time.

It is overkill on small sites, but for a site with as many users HELO response matches your hostname Your mailserver is not an open relay I second the PHPList recommendation.
I highly recommend you install PHPlist .

I have used SendStudio in the past, but I am wondering if there is an open source version using LAMP?
Preferably, it should use a WYSIWYG editor for the emails, and be friendly on your average user.
