Is it essential to upgrade to the 4.x versions of phpLD? I'm pondering if it is worth the revamp to upgrade to a newer version or to stay with 3.x.

You gotta upgrade your theme or find a new theme modded their 3.x phpLD and are happy with....
PHPLD come up with very useful and improved facilities with V 4.x, just check it out and get review PHPLD will result in breaking your theme.
