Another short term solution is to cut a trench parallel to the drain and sever the invading roots.
You will either have to replace the drain or remove the tree.

It's hard to describe, the tree root comes to the pipe and then when above
and below it at the same time, hence engulfing it and when I dig back it's
also roots.

Supply lines, the
sewer pipe (Sch 20?) is not (or very low pressure).
Considering tree roots for pressure applications i.e.
Of more bucks I can have a much more substantial pipe
using schedule 40.

You need to actually REMOVE the bad sod, as far down as you can.
I would assume the easiest way would be to use a backhoe/loader, remove it, then put some good loam over the weeds and the crab grass.

How to change a file on the fly along a pipe?
I'm probably looking for a way to buffer a file at the beginning of a pipe, which in contrast to this:
cat foo.txt | grep bar > foo.txt
... would preserve the input data from destruction by the pipe itself...

Cast if not leaking now, will at some point so the best thing to do would be to remove any and all of it you can tight around the pipe.
