Should it be "politics is", or "politics are"? Google shows "the politics are" with 2.2 million hits, and "the politics is" with 5.8 million hits, so there's room for disagreement there.
Is it context based, and how so? "We have tried spending money. ...

Is that the relevant measure? Genuine question it seems that part of the problem is that program was originally set up for people to draw at 59 when that was the expected age of death.

I understand that but clearly the increases in life expectancy have outpaced the increases in the SS retirement age .
Life expectancy of 59 doesn't mean people are expected to die at 59, especially not people who are almost 59 .
