In meetings, I often see people detaching the VGA connector from one running laptop and connecting it to another, while the projector is still on.
Is this 100% risk free, and OK by design of the VGA standard? If there's a risk involved in hot-plugging...

We have an Dell Inspiron 1521. Everything runs fine except that external displays are no longer getting a signal. It just stopped working the other day. If you get the VGA cord just right it will get a signal through for a second, but then it goes away...

You can't really easily replace the vga port, but you can purchase a usb to vga for the plug, in which case it would help to resolder it.

When opening a new monitor I am amazed that the VGA cable is always attached. Even with new high end monitors that include Display Port and DVI cables the old VGA cable is always attached while the others are just left in the box.

I wonder if it has something to do with the fact the older monitors came with a built-in VGA cable gotten used to VGA, because it was (and still is) used on older monitors, quite a lot of modern LCD it's easier to hot-swap VGA than....

Well the other day we had an electrical surge and my pc went funny, I have a old screen that only takes a VGA cable.
So I switched on my pc and everything looked weird, colours were mixed up:
All greens were gone on ...

I have a Thinkpad T60 that I use at work. When I plug in an external monitor to the VGA port of the machine (either the VGA port in the laptop's docking station, or the VGA port built into the laptop itself), the image on that monitor appears tinted yellow...

If that is the case you'd need to send it back for repair .
