I am trying to charge an iPod on an XP box. I plug into the USB, it mounts as a disk. Once I dismount, so I can start using the iPod while it charges, the usb port shuts off power. what gives?

As far as your USB HUB not having enough power, I can see fighting for power on the....

If the item has its own power supply, then the hub shouldn't need to be powered.
Usually, if the item you are plugging in takes power from the USB then the hub needs to be powered.
