Put another way: be solid with the fundamentals....
Those are usually saved for the in-person interview.
You're more likely to be asked about that stuff than something higher up the food chain .
Make sure you know your basic data structures and algorithms .

A good intro book is " Head First Design Patterns "
The official book is " Design Patterns " (this is commonly referred to as the "Gang of Four" (GoF) book) .
A lot of companies are big on design patterns for OO development .

Maybe it's just me, but I have seen way too many of these types of questions in the past and they seem to be popping up on SO and other forums I visit with increased frequency .

I personally don't think that TAOCP should be read front-to-back .
Concrete Mathematics' by Knuth and others covers all (if memory serves) the maths you'll need for TAOCP .
