aol not responding - Forums
Hi all
A friend has W.
Vista & uses AOL for their ISP with broadband and has done so with no problesm for about 9months.
On the 24th when they tried to log on to AOL it froze and the Not Responding message showed.
But he can connect to the Internet via Internet Exploree & accessing via webmail - so the router BB does not appear to be the problem.
He tried several times, switching off etc and then spoke to AOL call centre.
After doing all he was told.
I.e. turning off router, checking settings etc, it still would not work & they told him to speak to person who set up computer - v.
Helpful!
He has no contact with the person who set it up so I went and helped and restored the computer to a date prior to his problems.
I entered all updates for Windows, virus checker etc and yes, we managed to log onto AOL as usual.
We did this several times and all was well.
He has now today rung to say, tried to log on last night and 'Not responding' happening again!!!
- so any ideas as to why this is happening and what to do next please?
Thanks to one and all in advance

Hi baffled32 )
Tell Your Friend...
Don't mess around, or do anything else to his computer - Just Yet!
Why?
Because I don't think there is anything wrong with your friends computer
Why?
Because exactly the same thing happened to me on - Thursday 23rd :0
I Ended Up...
Uninstalling The - AOL Software
One Question...
Is your friend using AVG 8 ?
Have a look at my thread on the Wilders Forum : http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=223497
It will give you the full picture of what happened to me...
The Day My AOL Died
The thread actually starts off about AVG 8
That's because...
I thought it might have been an AVG 8 Update that broke my AOL Software.
However!
If you have the patience to read all my posts in that thread
You'll Soon See...
My AOL Problem - Is exactly the same as your friends
Does Your Friend Know?
... On The 31st Of October...
AOL Is Shutting Down...
AOL Message Boards
AOL Pictures
And a load of other AOL - Stuff!
I Think AOL UK ...
Is On Its Way Out!
:0
Believe Me... I'm Not Happy With - AOL

Not exactly true .
. . . . .
The email I had from AOL yesterday states 'AOL Pictures to close down on 31st December 2008 and the service will be replaced by a new one run by Pixem'.
The email then goes on to explain how to transfer your pictures etc.
To the new service, and advises you to do so before 31.12.08.
I know this doesn't help or solve the OP's question, but it may help to alleviate AOL users from worrying needlessly.
Alan.

Hi allachie9 )
If you have a look at the - AOL Message Board
I know it's all rather confusing
But there does seem to be...
An awful lot of changes going on with - AOL
Some Things...
People are getting notified about.
Other Things...
Some people talk about as though it's just - Rumor
Others talk with a definite confidence of - Truth
I also had the email about my Photo's and Pixem
However!
1/ I had never even heard of Pixum before yesterday.
2/ There is a post on the AOL Message Board...
Warning people that this Pixum is - Rubbish!
And that our Photos will Not be kept at their original Resolution.
3/ It Is Really Upsetting
It's like someone saying...
" You've got to move out of your house "
And...
" You've got a few days to move all your belongings "
Re : AOL Software Failure
Then Locking The Door On Us...
So We Can't Get In - To Move Our Belongings :0
With AOL moving other things to - Bebo
What's going to be the point of the AOL software?
How far is AOL going to go with all this

Hi Zoe,
You're right, it is confusing, and I'm easily confused anyway !
!
I've never heard of Pixem either, but as I don't use 'My Pictures' , it won't really affect me.
I think we just need to wait and see, and not to panic, there are, after all, plenty of other ISPs out there.
Regards, Alan.

Hi baffled32 )
Just to try and work out..
What Me and Your Friend have exactly in common - That our AOL Software has died at the same time
Could you ask your friend a few more questions please...
1/ Like I asked before...
Does he have AVG 8 ?
* It's possible this AOL Problem - Was caused by an Update to AVG 8 :0
2/ Does he have any Photos stored with AOL ?
* Could AOL have deliberately done this...
To people that have Photos stored with AOL
Could the prospect of thousands of people, all trying to download or transfer their Photos to Pixum..
Be too much for AOL UK to cope with.
So...
They Locked Us Out :0
3/ Before his AOL Software Died...
Was he having problems with the Welcome Page?
e.g.
Only half the page showing.
Jumbled Up!
4/ When signed into AOL ...
Had your friends Mouse Pointer started Flickering and Disappearing Sometimes?
5/ Now!
... When your friend signs into AOL via IE7 / AOL Co .
Uk ...
Does he have a problem with - AOL Today ?
e.g.
" Internet Explorer can not display this page "
My Computer
Vista - Home Premium
AOL 9.0VR
Thanks!

Hi Alan )
I Just Find It So Strange!
All these changes to AOL
Then To Top It Off...
I get locked out of my AOL Software :0
In The End...
I had No Choice but to Uninstall it
Every time I tried to Sign In to AOL ...
I Got Stuck!
Then my whole computer would freeze up.
And Then...
I would have No Choice but to Force my Computer to Shutdown.
How Did It Happen?
I haven't got a clue
On Wednesday night...
I could sign in and out of AOL - No Problem!
On Thursday morning...
AOL - Big Problem!
Thanks!

Hi Zoe
Thanks so much for your very detailed answer.
Good to know we are not alone with our AOL problem out there!
In reply to your questions –
my friend does use AVG paid - (silly person the Free version is excellent!)
He does not use AOL for Pictures
I think he was having problems with the welcome page
He was having problems with the mouse flickering.
Anyway I am going to my friend tomorrow to try and help sort this out.
First I am going to uninstall AVG paid – install the Free version.
Secondly if this doesn’t work I will uninstall AOL and then re-install.
Do you think this a logical sequence?
Will let you know the outcome.
Thanks to all for your assistance to yet another AOL related problem!

Hi baffled32 )
>>>>>
My friend does use AVG paid
With other ( Non AOL ) people also reporting problems with their Internet connection, after the AVG 8 - Paid - Update ...
I Think It's Safe To Say Then...
The Problem Was Definitely Caused By Last Weeks Big Update To - AVG 8 - Paid!
:0
I Now Realise...
AOL was actually the innocent victim in all this .
AVG 8 - Paid!
... The Villain!
>>
I think he was having problems with the welcome page
>>>
He was having problems with the mouse flickering.
I'm not sure how many people have been experiencing the jumbled / half missing ..
Welcome Page.
However!
I do know from the AOL Message Board...
A lot of people are experiencing the - Mouse Pointer Problem :0
>
Does Your Friend Know?
... On The 31st Of October...
Sorry!
That should have been ...
31st December
>>>>>
First I am going to uninstall AVG paid – install the Free version.
>>>>>
Do you think this a logical sequence?
Oh God!
... I'm Not So Sure!
I know it's AVG 8 - Paid!
That's caused this AOL Problem
But it seems a little bit crazy...
Uninstalling AVG 8 - Paid!
.. For AVG 8 - Free!
1/ Because AVG 8 - Paid ...
Does offer a lot more protection than AVG 8 - Free
2/ Because your friend has already paid for AVG 8 - Paid ...
He will loose his money - For the same thing..
But Less Protection
3/ Even though AVG 8 - Free ..
Doesn't seem to have caused any problems with AOL - Yet!
Since AVG 8 Came Out....
There has been a heck of a lot more reports of problems regarding AVG 8 - Free ...
Than AVG 8 - Paid!
4/ In the next few weeks...
AVG 8 - Free ... Could be given the same / similar - Update.
Your Friend Would Be Back To Square One
If I had spoken to you that first day...
The Day My AOL Died
Then I probably would have left my AOL Software Installed.
Not Tried Signing In to It!
And just waited to see if AVG 8 - Paid ...
Sent out an Update - Fix
Because I've already Uninstalled My AOL Software
And because all the things it was worth having for ( eg.
AOL Pictures ) ...
Is Being Shutdown
I've Decided Not To Reinstall My AOL Software
When a New Version of the AOL Software is available in the UK
Because AOL 9.0VR - was never very stable anyway
OR...
Once I'm completely convinced...
AOL UK hasn't been hit by the Credit Crunch ..
And - Going Bust!
:0
Then I'll Consider...
Reinstalling My AOL Software
>>
Will let you know the outcome.
Please Do
Good Luck!
And Tell Your Friend...
Good Luck!

Hi Zoe
Final update for you.
I first tried to run the AVG repair but it did not work.
Next I restored back to 2 days prior to the 23rd October.
With great difficulty (because PC was going so slow, mouse not happy, etc) I finally managed to uninstal AOL 8 Paid.
Turned all off afterwards and immediately on turning back on, things were working much better.
I installed FREE Avast, which I have heard is good with Vista.
Connected to internet via IEX7 - all okay.
Then tied AOL - after a few boxes flicking up saying it was looking for new connections etc.
It all connected and worked fine.
I turned PC on and off 3 times, each time opening AOL again and all was well.
Did a Comp check - defrag and set a new restore point and have just received an e-mail from said friend who has advised all has worked well all afternoon.
Hope yours gets sorted soon.
Best of luck
Baffled32 :O)
