The DijonStock Yamaha AW16G, AW1600 & AW2400 digital recording support forum • View topic - Bartman is on a Diet
OK, I have "officially" put myself on a diet and exercise program.
Any (serious) tips would be appreciated.
Here's what I've done so far:
I've cut out unhealthy snacks and replaced them with fruit or protein bars.
Cut back on meal volume.
No 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, etc....
Cut out (weeps) beer.
Bringing a salad with olive oil/balsamic vinegar (sometimes a few ounces of chicken) for lunch instead of buying "whatever I feel like eating".
Power walking or jogging every evening.
Starting out with 2.5 miles, working my way back up to my old 4-7 miles (3 years ago).
I signed up for the adult soccer league after a 1 year hiatus.
We start in mid February.
I told my teammates I'm a field player again, no more (full time) goalkeeping.
My "fighting weight" goal is 185 lbs...anything less than that and I look anemic.
I'm 210 lbs right now and that is AFTER losing 5 lbs of holiday weight.
25 lbs of weight loss by summertime or bust !
I'm posting this so I don't wimp out on my own personal challenge.

Go Bartman!
Foremost, you always have to wonder...
Is weight loss a goal in itself or a consequence of another goal (healthier habits)?
If it's the first, you're bound to lose.
If it's the second, you shouldn't pay attention to what makes you slim, but to what is good for you...
Getting slim will occur anyhow.
Second, there's a lot of health in small things.
My office is on the 4th floor and I wouldn't know what the elevator looks like on the inside...
Except it's too small
Third: no exceptions as far as food is concerned.
Eating a cookie with the tea is OK, but: ONE.
Not seven, like me, or likely more like me: seventeen.
Fourth: eat decent meals.
Decent breakfast, lunch, dinner.
If you eat too little it'll only result in cravings for snacks in between meals.
Lots of success to you, Bart, I know what it feels like.
I lost 22 pounds in 14 weeks, and counting!

Cheers Robbie.
I hear ya' man. The issue is pretty simple for me.
Health/energy is the #1 concern though I am healthy and pretty energetic, pants being too tight around the waist is the #2 concern and overall appearance is #3.
My office is on the 29th floor of a 63 story building.
They lock the stairwells for entry/re-entry.
You can only walk down.
That's an idea though.
I've always been and remain a breakfast eater, though light...and I don't skip meals.
I slowly but surely increased intake and decreased activity.
A recipe for manboobs at my age.
I'm gonna fix it.
Thanks for the insight.
It's very good as usual.

I agree with Mac, with prudent eating and exercise there's no reason you can't indulge in a beer now and again and still lose weight.
I'm sure you'll be successful Gary, stretch it out and cool it down so you don't get injured and have fun.
You'll be there before you know it.

Thanks Mac & Don.
I've gained a few extra lbs before, but never been "overweight".
As Mr.
Burns said to Homer: "Simpson....fat, bald and stupid is no way to go through life."

Never try to devour an entire casadia in one sitting.

185 sounds abut right for 5'10.

I always thought that Quote: belonged to Dean Vernon Wormer(Animal House).
Or was it "fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life son".

My body is built to perfection.
My job requires no physical exercise and I doze for dollars in the pilot's lounge listening to the History Channel all day waitin on the cell phone to ring.
How do I do it?
No beer for me any more.
Marguritas and a snack before bed.
Small breakfast. Nice huge lunch!
Radiation and Chemotherapy a couple of years back helped too.
THE MUSIC IS DOWN IN HERE

I think that is some of the best advice I have ever heard around here.
There's so much talk about the French Paradox.
These people eat as they please and stay slim and healthy.
Have lived in both worlds, I think I know why, and no it's not the wine.
Above all things, processed foods.
They don't eat them.
There is so much sugar put in American foods it's incredible.
Portions.
It blows me away how much is put on a plate in the US.
Here we eat in courses.
You have a small appetizer...called the Entre, the main course, small bit of cheese (optional) and dessert.
ALWAYS dessert.
Time.
Americans consumme their huge portions in record time.
You go to a restaurant here, and you will spend a minimum of 2 hours at the table.
No, it's not because of lousy service.
You go to someone's house to eat and you will pass 3 hours.
You take your time.
Turnover in American restaurants is like 20 minutes, I swear.
Snacks.
We do not eat constantly between meals.
Snacks are consummed, but one the whole, rarely.
Variety.
Lamb, veal, rabbit, duck, and a lot of things I don't have names for.
Red beef is a small amount of consumption.
But, on the whole, it is processed foods that are the killer...and that includes fast food.
Sure there's Mac's here, but there's not one on every corner and a bazillion others to go with it.
There are no "diet departments" here in the grocery stores.
No best seller diet books.
None of that. No obsession, no anxiety over what we eat.
Exercise is simply sport whose object is not weight or health, but recreation.
And best of all...no one looking over your sholder telling you what you should and shouldn't eat, let alone how to live your life.

I tend to stay around the 180 mark these days at a tad under 6ft -
I went up to around 220 in my mid 20's - due to weight training and dietary supplements....
I'm still a bit obsessive about doing weights and get really itchy if I haven't trained for a couple of days -
I find running is the quickest way to drop pounds -

OK girls, listen up!
I get on and off a program every couple of years.
The best way to go is a modified version of how bodybuilders train.
Their main weapon?
METABOLISM . A combination of cardio, resistance (weight) training and metabolism modification is the safest, longest lasting and effective route to go...If I may be allowed;
1) Cardio--FIRST thing in the morning.
Do not pass go or any donut shops, get on yer bikes and ride!!
(heh heh...) Approximately 20 minutes of cardio on an empty stomach will jump-start your metabolism and begin to burn EXISTING fat.
If you eat first, you will only burn the nutrients consumed...20 minutes kicks the metabolism in, 30 mins to an hour (or more if ya like that kind of thing) will begin a massive calorie burn...You are welcome to do cardio anytime and as often as you like, but first in the morning is most effective, and if you do it later, make sure you haven't eaten anything for two hours prior...
2)Weight training--Pump some poundage, dude.
Nothing elevates an already moving metabolism like resistance training, paricularly if done immediately before or after your cardio workout.
Most weight guys will do 10 minutes of cardio, 30-45 of weights, then another 30-60 mins of cardio...If you want to bulk up, stagger your regimen--Give the muscle groups a few days to "heal", rotate what you lift and how.
If you don't want to bulk, do the regimen every time--You will tone rather than build...Two ways to do it;
High weight, low reps, and low weight, high reps.
The low weight is better for toning, high weight bad for your hernia...
3)EAT!!!--After you workout, like within 90 minutes afterward, breakfast is a must--EATING RAISES YOUR METABOLISM.
Overeating is bad, however (duh)...High protien, medium carbs for breakfast.
Then make sure that you eat something every couple of hours--IT KEEPS YOUR METABOLISM UP!!.
Small snacks, like half an apple, a couple grapes, a power bar, whathaveyou, will keep the metabolism fooled into high gear.
DO NOT EAT ANYTHING FOR THE LAST TWO HOURS OF YOUR DAY...Find a calorie calculator, online or elsewhere, and find the optimum intake for your size and weight, then eat less than that number--You cannot NOT lose weight...
4)Nutition is everything--don't forget to eat the good shit.
High carb candy bars and hoagies are acceptable, only not all day, every day.
Learn to eat a half of one.
Vitamins and supplements are way cool.
I personally use a power drink that puts Red (blech!) Bull to shame-- 4900% of B-12 per serving!!
And it costs less than Red Bull.
I also eat "meal replacement bars", less than 300 calories per, and they actually taste not too nauseating.
I drink a protien shake every day...If anyones' interested in the stuff I use for vitamins and supplements, PM me and I'll hook you up.
These guys make the best health shit there is...
What, you thought the cross country ski story was just for your entertainment?
Hell, I've been on them every day since the boots got here, MAN what a great workout!!
Oh, and uh, good luck on gettin back in shape!!

Excellent detailed information Stetto.
I'm gonna give some of this a try.
My daughter advised me to run in the morning BEFORE I eat instead of in the evening after dinner.
Your advise puts two votes in the "jump start the metabolism" category.

Baby Steps, man, Baby Steps.
Summertime = Memorial Day?
= May 29
Now til May 29 = approx.
19 wks
2 lbs./week x 13 weeks = He shoots....
He SCORES!!
6 weeks leeway leaves room for an occasional brewski.
Unless you go all out, lose 38 lbs....then you strut around on the beach in a speedo.

Great way to break it down Wingster!
I agree on the baby steps approach, but No speedo for this dude.
Speedo's ain't popular here in Tejas!

Mick's got it right, the pros will tell ya that a lb.
Or two a week will not slam your system and will also not pile right back on when you're done.
A slow weight loss also conditions your mind to the regimen you're using, making it easy to maintain a healthy lifestyle...
Just bear in mind that life is short--Don't give up the good stuff just to look good...'specially in a Speedo (yes, I've made that mistake, but only ONCE!!)
