All-Time All-Franchise Teams - NYYFans.com Forum
Using: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, (DH), five SP, and one or two RP.
DH can be factored in or left out.
Usually the DH is the best hitter not chosen.
But some AL teams use their actual best DH.
Passed-over players can be mentally substituted if you feel the need.
(e.g., if you think Reggie or Rickey ought to be the Yankees DH - although I can't see how you pass up Mattingly)
In general a player has to have at least two great years or three good years to be considered a member of a team.
But some teams (especially expansion teams) don't have a player who had ANY good years at a certain position.
So, for example, the Padres get Alomar at second out of pity.
Note: Players are strictly judged by how they performed for each particular team .
In the case of Renteria on the Marlins, for example, you're supposed to think of him strictly as he was on the Marlins.
The Marlins get no credit for how Renteria has performed in St.
Louis. (But he still might be Florida's best SS, of course.) That goes for all the players and pitchers.
This list was created with the help of several posters on redsoxnation.net
Most of the selections are from memory, with a little help from baseballreference.com.
Looking forward to some feedback and sub-topics:
Which teams have the best outfields, infields, starters, all-around rosters...etc.

Well, no replies yet...
I rank the Red Sox #1, based on their starting pitching.
Having 4 of the greatest 12 pitchers of all time sets them apart.
Also, having a HOFer at every position helps.
(BTW, the Yankees haven't had a third baseman play any of his HOF years for them.
Joe Sewell, Home Run Baker, Wade Boggs, and now ARod...they did all their hall-of-faming for other teams.
So you haven't really had a HOFer at every position.
Not until ARod has a couple more for you.)
So some changes/corrections:
- Put Biggio in his rightful place, 2B, and added Ausmus.
- Subbed Huff for Boggs at 3B for TB, added Winn to OF.
- Added Catfish Hunter to the A's (how did I forget?), yanked Hudson.
- Added Alexander (another big goof) and Hippo Vaughn to the Cubs.
Took out Sutcliffe and Wood.

As for best outfield, I'd say the Giants edge out the Yankees.
Bonds and Mays = 2 of the best 6 of all time, if not 2 of the best 3.
I can't decide who has the best infield.
Any help?
Best pair of relievers: Oakland w/ Eck and Rollie.
Yanks a close second with Rivera and either Gossage or Righetti.
Still can't pick an infield.
Can't even narrow it down to a handful...
Hmmm...still no replies.
I'll assume that means that everyone agrees with the teams.
And that everyone agrees that the Red Sox have the best all-time team.

Did you get that from somehwere or make it up yourself?
If you made it up yourself that's very very impressive!

Thanks!
I picked 15 of them (mostly from memory but with a little help from baseballreference.com).
The others were picked by various members of redsoxnation.net (Clyde Engle, JohnTheBaptist, Tyrone Biggums, LuisAparicio, Seabass, CTLovesTheSox, bottom9th, staz, B36_11_17, Section40Forever).
I edited the final list.

Babe Ruth should be a starter on the Boston pitching staff
It was definitely a tough call, leaving out Ruth.
YR AGE - W L - CG SO - IP HITS BB K - ERA lgERA ERA+
1915 20 - 18 8 - 16 1 - 217.7 166 85 112 - 2.44 2.78 114
1916 21 - 23 12 - 23 9 - 323.7 230 118 170 - 1.75 2.77 158
1917 22 - 24 13 - 35 6 - 326.3 244 108 128 - 2.01 2.58 128
1918 23 - 13 7 - 18 1 - 166.3 125 49 40 - 2.22 2.69 121
1919 24 - 9 5 - 12 0 - 133.3 148 58 30 - 2.97 3.02 102
But Smokey Joe was more dominant for more years.
1909 19 - 11 7 - 13 4 - 160.7 121 43 88 - 2.18 2.50 114
1910 20 - 12 13 - 14 3 - 198.7 155 56 145 - 1.68 2.54 152
1911 21 - 23 17 - 25 5 - 275.7 226 76 231 - 2.02 3.27 162
1912 22 - 34 5 - 35 10 - 344.0 267 82 258 - 1.91 3.44 180
1913 23 - 11 5 - 12 1 - 145.7 120 61 123 - 2.29 2.93 128
1914 24 - 9 3 - 11 1 - 113.3 94 34 67 - 2.62 2.68 102
1915 25 - 15 5 - 10 3 - 157.3 120 44 63 - 1.49 2.78 187
The one advantage Ruth would have is that he is still one of the best postseason pitchers of all time.
Three WS games in which he absolutely blew away the competition.
(Simply amazing...No matter how many home runs Bonds hits, until we see a Bonds who can pitch like Maddux, Ruth will always be the best player of all time.)
Meanwhile, Wood only pitched in the 1912 WS, and was less than stellar.
Tough call!
But I reluctantly choose Smokey Joe.

For the Tigers team, I would put Bill Freehan over Lance Parrish (better with the glove, great with the bat in relation to his time period).
Hernandez had a better peak, but I would argue John Hiller/Mike Henneman in terms of consistency for the closer.
Also, not a slam on the Yankees, but doesn't it seem odd that for being the best baseball franchise of all time, they only have one all-time great starter (Whitey)?
I know Ruffing, Goofy, Chesbro, Hoyt, and Pennock are in the Hall, but they generally aren't considered the upper echelon of pitchers.
I also know that they have employed great pitchers (Clemens, Catfish, Niekro, Gaylord) not at their prime.
I guess they make up for it with the almost all-Hall batting order:
Dickey/Berra, Gehrig, Lazzeri, Rizzuto (Jeter will be), Ruth, DiMaggio, Mantle, whoever.
The only exception is third place--which could be remedied by A-Rod.
You're totally right about Freehan over Parrish.
I'm changing that ASAP.
Henneman was definitely more consistent.
But Hernandez won the CY and MVP for a title winner!
That's got to earn him the spot, IMO.
RE: Yankees all-time pitching...
I'm not sure the Yankees have even had a top 25 starting pitcher.
Whitey Ford's claim to all-time greatness is all W-L%.
Rivera could arguably be in the top 25 pitchers overall.
Of course, their lineup is extraordinary.
HOF at every position except third.
And they've had enough pitching to win 26 titles, so...
It is interesting to note that while the best Yankees third basemen (Nettles and Rolfe) are not HOFers, they have employed several HOF third baseman, notably Frank "Home Run" Baker, Joe Sewell, and Wade Boggs.
Here's my Yankees franchise based on career Yanks:
C: Bill Dickey (Berra was a Met briefly)
1B: Lou Gehrig
2B: Bobby Richardson
3B: Red Rolfe
SS: Derek Jeter (for now, Rizzuto for career)
LF: Roy White
CF: Joe DiMaggio
RF: Tommy Henrich, out of the actual men that played right field
DH: Mickey Mantle (although on a real team, Mantle would bump Henrich, and Earle Combs would be in there too)
Rotation
SP: Whitey Ford
SP: Ron Guidry
SP: Mel Stottlemyre
SP: Spud Chandler
SP: (technically) Orlando Hernandez (has been with the Expos, but never pitched there, career Yankee for now)
CP: Mariano Rivera (for now)

Tough call between Collins and Fox at 2B.
Both had great Sox careers but I went with Nellie because he was the spark plug of our 1950s teams.
Belle was mostly our LF and only played on the south side for two years while Baines was our DH for years.
As far as the pitchers, Walsh and Lyons are the only two that really stand out.
A good case can be made for the rest of the choices.
