Packard Bell User Forum :: View topic - IE7 LiveSearch problem.

Since start up last night whenever I initiate a search in IE7 with default LiveSearch engine an AOL search results page appears for "%s" (without the Quote: s).

It's a list of High St stores etc. Suspected malware but ZoneAlarm Suite (uses Kaspersky AV) and AdAware scans only found usual cookies which were removed.

Cleared cache, ran CCleaner, turned off system restore, but still getting same AOL page. Today I removed then reinstalled IE7 but problem persists. All other functions in IE7 run as usual. Last week I had to rescue system (iStart 1359 - XP SP2) from "serious error" after a security app (now replaced) failed to load at start up causing black screen etc.

So I'm also concerned this problem could be start of more to follow. For now I've reset default search engine to Yahoo and it works fine. Any advice would be much appreciated.

(Get Firefox? ) Cheers.

Does this -> http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?s=f706154f4cbd14a0a7dc20fdef6bec0e&showtopic=157296&st=0 sound familiar?

Thanks for the reply, BM! Yeah, does sound familiar.

Browsed similar forums for wareout infection and noticed some people also having issues with security apps, this may explain my previous problem of AVG 8.0 not loading.

To add to that I've tried to d/load Spybot several times today which fails at: FILE DOWNLOAD. Error sending request. The server or address could not be resolved. Currently ZoneAlarm Suite and AdAware run/scan OK although they obviously seem to be missing something! I've d/loaded TrendMicro Hijack This and saved log of the scan.

Assume I should upload log to a "wareout infection forum" (such as CastleCops), as recommended by TrendMicro, for advice on action?

(Afraid I have distinctly average PC knowledge). Can upload here if you wish. I can live with PC as is using Yahoo as default, but at same time don't want to leave anything potentially nasty on system, and the Spybot installation failures don't give much cause for optimism. Any further comments? If not I'll go ahead with Plan A. Thanks again for response, much appreciated.

You are welcome, jim! Thanks for posting some more details.

The way you describe the problem makes it sound like you got infected.

Have you tried using Firefox to doownload Spybot S&D?

Do you get the same error message? Feel free to post the results of the HijackThis scan here.

I will do my best to help you. Also, let me know if you want to switch browsers.

There are some very nice security addons available for Firefox, which imho is the safer choice compared to IE.

Hi again, BM. Would've posted back sooner but despite best efforts I've been in popular demand! Installed Mozilla Firefox (at 2nd attempt, as first d/load corrupted) but Spybot installation failed as previous, and yes, I used fresh .exe file d/loaded with Firefox. Also checked Spybot granted full access in ZoneAlarm program control. Quote: : C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\AOLacsd.exe I assume AOL is your ISP? Quote: : R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://search.aol.co.uk/web?isinit=true&query=%s Looks like we found the culprit.

My ISP is Talk Talk, AOL software came preloaded by PB but I've never activated it.

(Actually there's a few PB preloads I don't use.) That does indeed look like the culprit.

Know an effective removal method and where it came from?

Is it a virus then and not a reg problem, and any relation to Spybot probs etc? Forgive all the questions, just trying to get a grip on this.

There is even an AOL service running. Quote: : O23 - Service: AOL Connectivity Service (AOL ACS) - America Online, Inc.

- C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\AOLacsd.exe Can you check if you have AOL software installed?

If so uninstall AOL software (use "Add or Remove Programs").

Run HijackThis again, if it finds anything AOL related use http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 and check if it lists any AOL programs and uninstall them. Other than that, have a look at http://anti-aol.livejournal.com/66202.html

AOL not in Add/Remove Programs or Windows Components, must be because came with system (noticed Cyberlink Power Cinema also not there, never use that either). I'll attempt to remove manually using links provided, probably take the easiest option as normally wouldn't touch registry with a bargepole. Thanks again, will post back with results.

Next step, please? Thanks.

Use regedit to delete/modify the registry entry for the default search engine.

Found in reg edit by following file path: Name: (AB icon here) (default) Type: REG_S Data: http://search.aol.co.uk/web?isinit=true&query=%s (Was going to post screenshot but don't have online storage facility for you to access.) So just r-click on the name and select delete, then restart to update registry? Problem solved and nothing else affected by reg edit. Forgive me but I don't relish tampering with registry and don't want to muck anything up.

Yes. It is possible that you have to choose a new default search engine after the reboot.

Hi, I'm back (eventually). Deleted that reg key Tue evening but after restart LiveSearch wouldn't set as default, kept going to Google.

Then from start up Wed PC lost all internet access!

Settings OK, even reset router. Didn't want to drag this on any longer (sure you'll appreciate!), so I've done full system recovery installing Windows only, thus avoiding AOL, Cyberlink, Norton and all the other crapware, and all running nicely.

Also now using Firefox as default browser. So imagine my dismay when I received an "important" email from ZoneAlarm today: "Overview : Microsoft Update KB951748 is known to cause loss of internet access for ZoneAlarm users on Windows XP/2000.

Windows Vista users are not affected. Impact : Sudden loss of internet access Platforms Affected : ZoneAlarm Free, ZoneAlarm Pro, ZoneAlarm AntiVirus, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware, and ZoneAlarm Security Suite" So THAT'S what happened Wed!

You couldn't make it up. Glad reinstalled OS anyway, think best thing for PC overall and got rid of all the clutter.

Now looking for Firefox add-ons (security etc) on web. Thanks for your advice and patience, BurningMonkey. It's been interesting!

You are welcome! Glad to hear you managed to solve your problem. I am not a friend of ZoneAlarm so it doesn't surprise me that it caused problems.

Since you are looking for addons for Firefox, check out CookieSafe, Adblock Plus, Flashblock and NoScript (if you are really paranoid).
