Gems of Television - :: LEAST I COULD DO FORUM ::
If I had tried to do less over the last few days, I dont think I could have succeeded.
Truly, this holiday season I have set records for time spent sitting on my ass.
Should The Guinness Book people be reading this, please get in touch with me so we can discuss which picture of me should be in next years book.
Still, it wasnt a complete loss.
I did discover a show I was previously unaware of, entitled Sons of Anarchy on FX.
Im a little more than halfway through the 1st season, and each episode sucks me in into the world of Samcro that much more.
I find that the setting and characters in this small town biker gang drama more believable than anything I ever saw on The Sopranos.
I may be in the minority here, but Id rather see Jax, Clay, Tig and Bobby in a shootout with another gang over 20 minutes of Tony Soprano breathing heavily any day.
The cast is a fantastic ensemble, and honestly, seeing Ron Perlman without any makeup on is a treat in itself.
Its great to see him in a leading role on TV once again.
All of this leads me to wonder if there any other television gems Ive missed recently, that I should play catch up on.
Any recommendations, folks?
I was just thinking what an interesting concept it is to eliminate the writer from the artistic process.
If we could just get rid of these actors and directors, maybe we've got something here.

Weeds on Showtime is spectacular
but the best thing on in my opinion is Mad Men on AMC, just wrapped up it's second season.

Off the top of my head the best shows I have seen so far have been Weeds and Dexter from Showtime.
Another if you are into fantasy is Sanctuary.

We (my Fiancnd I) watched all of Sons of Anarchy and we both really liked the show.
When you get to the end of the first season you will be dying for more, trust me!
Also, a great show we just got into is Arrested Development.

I'm too used to mentioning either Mission Hill or Undergrads and people look at me like wtf?
Both are hysterical cartoon series that had runs on MTV and Teletoon.
They're both a must see.
Comedic gems at their finest.

I don't watch much TV anymore, but I did stumble across this very entertaining internet series.
It's based on MMORPGs and has some hilarious characters and is very well done, in my opinion.
There is still only one season and each episode is like 3-5 minutes long, so it doesn't take very long to watch the whole thing.

My brother actually made me sit down one night and watch an episode of SOA.
I have seen them all since then, fantastic show.
I have started watching a show on NBC call "Chuck." It is incredibly fun to watch.
Also it is a classic but if you have not bought the "Firefly" dvds you should be ashamed of yourself.

SOA rocks. If you are halfway through, you are in for some great stuff.
Funny thing, the town Lodi they keep referring to is were i was born and raised haha.
Its not AS bad as it is portrayed, but its not far off.
another show i liked but NBC cancelled was My Own Worst Enemy.
I also picked up Life this season, another solid show from NBC.
Has a good balance between cop humor and cop drama.

For something a little on the lighter side, you should check out Burn Notice.
Jeffery Donovan is fantastic, and seeing Bruce Campbell (Yes, Army of Darkness Bruce Campbell) as a heavy drinking, cougar-chasing ex-special forces guy is a real treat.

I loved both shows, with Undergrads just a little more.

"Life" is a wonderful show that is currently running on NBC.
As it goes, i hate detective shows, but the characters are very very well drawn.
All of season 1 (only 11 episodes) are available on Hulu and season 2 is on hiatus until Feb 4.

Yea, my list of people I'd leave my husband for used to only be three men (Bruce Wayne, Indiana Jones and John McClain) but it may just be expanding to include Jax.
He makes a mistake near the end of the season that I may not be able to forgive him for (cause it's really really stupid as far as his romantic life goes) but I'm working on it.
That has more to do with the person I am than anything I think everyone else will have a problem with.
As far as other shows, I only this year discovered House and if you haven't jumped on that bandwagon yet for shame.
He's like an older, meaner, more curiosity-as-opposed-to-sexually-driven Rayne.
Also, TrueBlood on HBO was a fun romp, but that just may be my affinity for Anna Paquin's boobies.
I never read the books so I can't compare.
Dexter on Showtime is probably my favorite show atm, this season was almost as good as last season and last season had us watching episodes on demand three and four times a week.
Ooh, it's not on currently, but if you haven't checked out SciFi's Eureka, you're enough of a science nerd to get into that one too, and the characters are mostly believable.
This last season was a bit of a disappointment at first, but it made up for it in the end.
And whoever said Firefly, I second but for shame for thinking Sohmer's not enough of a geek to have all ready picked that one up years ago.

If you haven't seen the Wire yet, remedy that.
Best cop anything ever.
It goes way beyond simply being a police show about the war on drugs, it tells the story of the city of Baltimore at every level imaginable.
It examines the bureaucracy of the police department, the effects of the drug trade on a society, work unions, the political system, the educational system, the local media, and just how interconnected and depended on each other each of these social institutions are.
The story and the characters are uncompromising in their realism.
Easily the best tv show I've ever seen.
If you want a show that actually challenges you, you can't do better than the Wire.

FYI The Guild Season two is now up and running.
You can even get it for free on xbox live
If you are into British comedy:
Spaced Season 1 & 2 (available on DVD) staring Simon Peg of "Shawn of the Dead"
The IT Crowd (6 episodes a season.
Season 3 is now being released), but I'm not sure how get it on our continent except by torrents.
And hailing back to the Music suggestions of a few weeks ago:
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes "Are a Drag".
Show tunes + Punk Rock= Awesome.

To emphasize the earlier point: If you don't have Firefly, get it.
If you own it, watch it.
If you are currently watching it, you should be paying more attention to the show than the junk I'm writing.

Add Clone High to that list.
I absolutely loved that show.
Dexter is good, they just finished the third season of that.
It's about a serial killer who only kills other killers.
The cop drama can get annoying, I suppose if you like CSI you'll like it, if you don't like CSI you won't.
Reboot.
If you ever missed this show, go download it (they don't sell it, so all you can do is bootleg).
Clever and entertaining, it's about life inside a computer.
Things get really interesting in the last three or four episodes of season 2, when they start a continuing storyline.
Worst Week.
A new sitcom, and it's hilarious.
I've only seen a few episodes, but it's super funny.

I heartily second the Burn Notice recommendation.
It's like a sexy(er?) MacGyver in Miami....
And did I mention Tricia Helfer in season 2?

I'm going to throw up my support for SOA and Weeds, plus whatever happens to be on discovery at the time.
My favorite show this season has to be Life, even though I'm not usually a sucker for cop drama.
The characters are pretty thorough, and the dialogue is consistently funny.
Life seems to be the only show I can find myself catching every single week.

Mad Men, Firefly, and Dead Like Me are all good.
The first two are much better than Dead Like Me though.
