I'm thinking of buying an air conditioner with 12 amps.
What is that in volts?
I have an older electrical system and I don't want to overload it.
It's circuit breakers instead of fuses but I still want to be safe.
I had to have a ground wire installed a few years ago for the computer and wonder if I'll need the same for an air conditioner.
This is a long way of asking what a safe voltage would be.

Air conditioners either run on 115 V (normal household plugs) or 230 V (a special plug like stove or dryer uses.
If you think of electricity like water, voltage is the pressure that pushes it, and current (the amps) is the amount that flows.
You will need a ground wire, and your main concern will be whether your wioring can support another 12 A load.
Power, measured in watts, is the product of volts and amps.
For kilowatts, divide by 1000.

I need your help, today 01-07-2008 i buy a 2nd hand National air conditioner (window) 3/4 ton, whn i chk through meter in starting it takes 2.8 amp and in running its vary from 2.3 -2.9 amp, i just want to know we are in Pakistan here are 220 v current, can you tell me how much watts of this air conditioner and how much units consumed of my electricity if i used 10 -1 2 hrs per day.

thks Using the average of the current range, 2.6 A * 220 V = 576 W, or 0.576 kW.
Used 10.5 hours per day, it would use 6.05 kWh per day.
Frankly, that power draw seems VERY low for a 9600 BTU unit and more typical of a 6000 BTU unit.
