Jobs after "The Job". Any Suggestions? - Police Forums & Law Enforcement Forums @ Officer.com
I am about 11 months (or one bad day) away from retirement.
I am looking for a better than average paying job (prefer the Las Vegas area) to move into with little or no political BS.
I obviously have all the basics of police training and a few other specialty areas I picked up along the way.
I’m just curious if anyone had any ideas they could send my way for potential jobs once I’m done with this one.

Here's my plan. I'm sure there's enough action for both of us in the greater Las Vegas area:

It's pretty typical, but how about looking at a security job of some sort in one of the Vegas casinos?
Most of those guys are ex-cops or are moonlighting, so you wouldn't have the "wannabes" bugging you

Besides why get killed for somebody elses money?
The Feds have a security postition for retired cops...My wifes idiot brother (who is a contract security guard for the Feds) is always griping to me about the Fed in house security and about how they are all retried cops who just sit in a control room, dont do any real work and make twice what he makes, sounds pretty good to me actually.
I dont know what Fed buildings they have in Vegas but I imagine they have something.
I would also check with vegas metro, see if they have a court or custody postion.
Some of the sheriffs agencies hire retired cops to do summer boat patrol on the lakes.
One such place for that is lake Shasta in CA.
Douglas county might do that as well in Lake Tahoe.
I realize thats out of the LV area but I thought I would mention it.
Let me know how it goes, I am 3 behind you, although the LV area does nothing for me.
I am looking Colorado way lately, near Durango.

Lots of jobs are opening in the public and private sector in emergency operations / homeland security / continuity of operations.
We have had several guys from our agency walk out the door and directly into cush jobs - one at a university, one as a consultant and another for a large corporation dealing with disaster preparedness / emergency planning.

I retired after 20 years in local and Federal law enforcement here in Australia.
I had worked in most areas including patrol as a constable and sergeant supervisor, undercover narcotics, academy instructor, investigator and finally in intell on organised crime.
A few years back I was offered work for a State crime commission which investigates serious and organised crime, as well as corruption by State and local Government employees.
I work in the crime area as a surevillance devices monitor.
We listen to and watch crooks spilling their guts, bragging, counting lots and lots of money, bagging up and cutting drugs, etc.
Etc. We also track vehicles in co-operation with our surveillance teams.
Fascinating work with a great team and we have had some major wins in bringing down criminal groups and gangs.
Also, I don't get dirty, spat on, assaulted and abused.
I work as often or as little as I want, working around a roster which is very flexible and the pay is great!
Make a few enquiries and I'm sure there is a law enforcement organisation in the Las Vegas area which has similar positions.
Good luck and congratulations on your retirement.

The big bucks are almost always when you work for yourself.
Of course, there's associated risk as well.
But if I had your background, I would consider becoming an expert witness .
You work for yourself, you make lots of money, its easy, but useful work.
Being an expert witness is a bit easier to swallow for most ex-leo's because it's a way to use your skills without completely going over to the dark-side (not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that.) In fact, if you want the big money you'll probably want to use the expertise you've developed as an LEO in civil litigation.
That's where the cash is.
I see you are a State Trooper.
I think accident reconstruction may be right up your ally.
You've probably had to do more than a few of those in your career.
So you should be able to do it for insurance defense and personal injury firms now.
Whenever there is a serious car accident, both sides will need their own expert witnesses to tell the story from their point of view.
Most of the cases, after the reconstructions are done, will be settled anyway.
You may want to consider getting extra training, (if available) for those big interstate semis accident reconstruction.
They all have a minimum of $1M in insurance, and do lots of damage.
So those cases almost always hire accident reconstruction folks right from the beginning.
Being an expert witness is mostly about advertising.
Advertise in all the bar journals across the nation, but especially in your state.
Send direct mail to all the personal injury firms in the phone book.
Be very, very nice to the insurance defense firms who handle the defense for auto accident cases, etc.
You may also want to teach a class at a local law enforcement academy, community college or university, and give free/reduced price training in your area of expertise to LEO departments.
This will help solidify your credentials as an expert with the jury, and it's a line in your advertisement that attorneys can see to prove you know what you are talking about.
There are a few other areas that are ripe to become an expert witness in.
Just make sure it's areas that involve money, and not poor litigants.
For example, there's no reason to have anything to do with the death penalty, because those guys don't have much money.
But if you were an expert in premise liability for commercial businesses, such that you could testify whether the security measures at the casions were reasonable, (so they wouldn't be held liabe for crimes comitted there) there is money in that.
If I were in your shoes, expert witness would be the first new line I would try.

Health insurance until federal/state aid kick in is a huge reason...
Unless that's part of your retirement plan.
