Speedarena Forums: Unexplained weight loss/gain

I need some help from the more knowledgable here trying to figure out why over the past I have had some pretty significant weight loss and gain.

I graduated college about two years ago at a healthy 170.

I wasn't working out at all at the time and paying any mind to my diet either.

Naturally my body likes to hang around 165-175. About a year after I graduated, I began to gain weight slowly.

Nothing was changing about my lifestyle, expect for a small increase in alchohol consumption.

In a span of a month, I gained about 3 pounds.

I figured this was normal from the drinking.

But over the next three months, I ended up at about 185. Then suddenly and out of nowhere, I lost a good five pounds again.

Six months later, I somehow, and I still cant explain this, at 195 pounds.

The only thing I could think of was the calories were slowly catching up to me due to lack of exercise and bad diet.

But here is the kicker.

Now I have suddenly lost nearly ten pounds in a month and a half The strange thing to me is that except for the initial weight gain, I have had no difference at all in diet or exercise.

Literally we have a grocery list we follow every week with the exact same things on it, and I have a pretty common 40 hour a week job with the same amount of activity over the last year.

The only thing I can really think of is stress maybe.

The weight seems to come and go as it pleases, and it seems to be alot, and suddenly.

Any input here, cause im at a loss.

Weight does not magically appear on you, it's a numbers game.

More calories in and less burned means more calories stay in.

Those calories end up stored in your body's fuel tank (fat).

Add alcohol, a sedentary lifestyle, and a slower metabolism as you age and you have a recipe for weight gain. The next question to ask yourself is WHY are you eating and drinking more?

Why aren't you exercising? Are you on any new medication?

Are you in a stressful relationship?

Are you bored? Is your job stressing you out? Any one of the above, or other random things in your life, can contribute to your subconsciously ingesting more calories...they don't call it comfort food for nothing.

Did you ever do that eca stack you posted about before ?

Are you in a stressful relationship?

Are you bored? Is your job stressing you out? Yes, and yes.

Thats makes perfect sense.

In my own defense, we don't really eat unhealthy, my wife is preggo so its not even allowed in the house.

In the last two years ive gotten married, moved twice, graduated, got a new job, and am looking for a house.

I know over time the calories will add up. The thing that still doesnt as up is first, the weight gain isn't constant, I will be gaining a steady 2 lbs a months, then suddenly put on five pounds, which i guess can be explained.

What cant in my mind is suddenly losing so much so fast, its nuts.

When i look in the mirror I almost cant believe it.

Also, any large fluctuations (10 lbs or so) in your weight that occur over the course of a few days are NOT fat, they are water.

If you eat a bunch of salt or carbohydrates, your body will retain water.

You will bloat and appear to have gotten fatter.

After a few days, your body will go back to normal, unless you continue a salty/carby diet. The rest of your worries are just your imagination.

You could be subconsciously eating more or less. You could also be getting more or less exercise in your daily activity.

For example, in school, you might have walked a lot more between your classes than you do now if you have a desk job.

Or switching between more or less active jobs may change your calorie use through the day. On the other hand, if nothing can explain it, you may want to see a doctor.

Do you urinate frequently?

Vision a little blurry sometimes?

Are you tired a lot?

Trouble sleeping? Quote: , originally posted by alleghenyman » Let's just say I like my women like I like my cars - fast, cheap, kinda ugly and beaten up, unreliable, dangerous, unwanted.... 4 coilpacks, 2 gearboxes and counting...

Why not start keeping a log of what you eat and how much?

Try cleaning up your diet and being consistent.

I know when i stop paying close attention i can easily gain a few lbs.

Also like hfcs said, water weight fluctuates constantly so your weight on the scale is not always accurate.

Stress really doesnt count for weight loss/gain, if people are stressed they might eat more. are you having more meals out, more beers with the boys during the week ? you said up above your diet and exercise both arent good, why dont you try to work out a few times a week...

Organ theft, imo.

I think he said working out, not taking organs out.

However weight gain is another story.

Unplanned pregancy, imo.

Weight gain: maybe it's a toomah

"Weight does not magically appear on you, it's a numbers game." That may or may not be true.

People on low carb diets can eat more calories than others and still lose the same weight.

Hormones come in to play. Speaking of which, something like a thyroid problem could easily cause weight gain.

Do you have insurance?

Go get a physical done.

Sudden weight gain can be indicative of other problems.

Look up hypothyroidism. If everything is fine, you're just getting older.

Your body isn't growing anymore so the same calories plus a bit of alcohol could mean weight gain. You don't see all of those people in a gym for no reason.

+-10 pounds at 185 is not very much considering 5 pounds can easily be water.

This is especially considering it's over the course of 6 months.

How often do you weigh yourself?

When are you weighing yourself? I was weighing in pretty consistently at 163 for a few weeks.

Stopped weighing for 2 weeks and it was 168.

Is it fat? Maybe.

Is it because I switched from chicken and sriracha to pork chops and soy sauce?

Maybe. Anyway, the point is that +- 15 pounds over the course of 6 months is not that surprising.

That's <3 pounds a month.

If you said, I've been weighing myself every morning and have put on/lost 10 pounds in the last month, then I would be more worried.

Over a time course as long as 6 months, any number of small factors can make a change.

50 foot tapeworms.

I average 200 and consistently fluxuate +- 5 lbs.

I don't think this is anything overly unusual.

Thyroid? Dude just go to the doc and have them run some blood tests. It will take like 20-40 minutes of your time and a lot better than finding out you have XYZ in 2 years and if they found it earlier it would have been no big deal.

I chock it up to an overall inconsistent diet, and lack of excercise.

Ive longed to get a routine going, but I can't really afford a gym right now, and my apartment only has treadmills
