WINAMP.COM | Forums - Winamp will suddenly stop playing MP3's
Winamp will suddenly stop playing MP3's Gday
Gigabyte GA-M55SLI-S4
AMD Dual Core 5200+
4GB Ram
Nvidia GeForce 9500GT
Integrated 8-channel AC'97 audio
Vista Ultimate
Going back to the days when I used to run Win2k, I found the full version of Winamp used randomly crash (i.e.
It stopped playing my MP3's), so I installed Winamp V5.08e lite.
No more random crashes.
Now I have Ultimate I don't like Winmonkeys Media Player, so I have installed the recommended version of Winamp for my 32 bit OS V5.5.4.2147
Nullsoft
Winamp
5.54
Compatible
No action required
However the old problem of random crashes is occurring again, after Winamp crashes Winmonkey refuses to play my MP3's as well.
The only way around this crash is a reboot of the OS, yes you are right it is no biggy, BUT it is annoying the crap out of me.
My drivers are all up to date so why does Vista Keep doing this?
And please don't suggest I use Winmonkey, because that's an even bigger annoyance

Have you checked for an update for your sound card drivers?

Sorry, sometimes I have seen someone say "all drivers up to date" and only mean Windows Update.
As there was no brand name against the onboard sound card it did make me wonder.
I guess you checked the Gigabyte website.
Have you also tried the chipset manufacturer (sometimes Realtek have better drivers on their own website)
The key bit to me is - once the audio dies in winamp, it dies across your OS.
Which makes it sound less Winamp, and more Windows.
Curious as to why you are not using the latest Winamp?
I am on Vista Business 64, Use onboard Realtek Soundcard, and Winamp v5.56.
Could it be a corrupted MP3 file?

I tried using the latest version of Winamp, same problem, random crashes, as for a corrupted file I don't think so, with my old Win2k, I used Winamp Lite (In the 5 series), and it never skipped a beat.
As for the sound drivers, I went off to the Gigabyte website, downloaded there drivers.
But Vista Ultimate kicked bicked and screamed the whole way through the installation of the drivers (which the only way kicking and screaming I could get them to load was in safe mode), Ultimate wouldn't have a bar of the Gigabyte drivers in normal mode.
So I ended up rolling back the drivers to what Vista wanted which is V6.0.1.6305.

Vista is expected to give you extra prompts during the installation.
Just acknowledge them as you go.
Changing drivers is a major system change, so the OS is expected to whine a bit.
Are you SURE they were Vista drivers?
Gigabyte are usually good at this kind of thing.

Also - how many ancient Win2K programs have you taken over to your new Vista build?
Could you have some clashing ten year old programs there which are not fully Vista compatible?
What runs in your tasktray?

Just been to the Gigabyte website - and that is rather surprising, but the only Realtek driver there is a Beta release.
Go to www.realtek.com instead and get a better version from there.
It will involve working out which Realtek chip you have.
May need to check System Settings to see what Vista is calling it.
OR get a torch out and look at the REaltek chip itself.
There are no details on the Gigabyte website.
I would also nip over the nVidia and update the Chipset drivers as they also have a rather old date of 2006.

motherboard_driver_audio_realtek_whql_vistabeta ...
Downloaded from the Gigabyte site
Downloaded Nvidia's drivers today, albeit just for my graphics card.
Oh and Realteks site has the same version of drivers that I have installed at the moment
And none, I have bought a new AVS, and downloaded all the rest of my programmes.
NEXT!!

That is a bit weird with the lack of details on that Realtek Audio driver.
I can't understand how the filename can have BOTH "WHQL" and "Beta" in it as they are contradictory.
There ARE newer drivers on the Realtek website.
Try this page:
Realtek AC97
ht tp://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
Version 6305 (2009/9/7) is listed there.
Download it and give it a go.
nVidia - go back and get the drivers for your motherboard chipset.
Gigabyte have built the board around the nVidia nForce 4 chipset but don't seem to be offering the latest drivers.
(That whole Gigabyte page worries me.
It is only two or three year old drivers, which all match into the "Vista Testing" era.
Most drivers have matured to newer, less buggy versions)
What is an "AVS"?
Is Vista fully updated?
All service packs applied?
(Sorry if some of the questions I ask sound daft.
We are narrowing things now here.
You have yourself a friendly IT Engineer here who usually charges a lot of money per hour to fix this kind of thing )

NVidia - you need to look for "Legacy" drivers.
Product Type - Legacy
Product Series - nForce 4 Series
Product Type - nForce 4 SLI AMD
Operating System - Vista 32bit
Language - English
Which takes me to this page:

To answer your first comment Version 6305 (2009/9/7) is listed there.
I have that version of driver installed already.
I contacted Gigabyte with this question :- 10/6/2009 23:03
Question : When are you going to release a non beta version of Realtek Audio Drivers for Vista?
There response :-
Thank you for your kindly mail and enquiry.
Basically if there's no further problem found in the driver on the website, then we will not keep updating the driver, and if you want to test the system with the latest driver, please click HERE to download the latest driver from Realtek website.
If you have any further question or suggestion about our products/service, please do not hesitate to contact with us.
We will try our best to help you resolve the problem ASAP.
Regards,
GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY
For an IT engineer your not very good with the acronyms AVS = Anti Virus System.
And yes SP2 is installed, I have no outstanding critical updates, just one optional one I have declined that silver thingy.
By the way I am not an IT engineer, but I do build towers from the ground up.
And can usually nut out the problem, however as I have stated before :- I tried using the latest version of Winamp, same problem, random crashes, as for a corrupted file I don't think so, with my old Win2k, I used Winamp Lite (In the 5 series), and it never skipped a beat.
I am laying money it's an OS problem, something in Vista is not liking something else in Vista.
Found this in event viewer :-
Faulting application AUDIODG.EXE, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e02218, faulting module audioeng.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791a639, exception code 0xc 5, fault offset 0x000293a5, process id 0x540, application start time 0x01ca44e683c951ba.

There was no need for the insult about the acronym.
I am more used to "AV" being used for Anti-Virus.
(And I assume you have a decent brand name there, and not some crud like Norton\McAfee\etc)
Did you try the newer nForce 4 drivers?
From your error report there, this is clearly an audio issue.
Please remember that Vista is now three years or so old, and has had most of its problems shaken out.
There are MANY people on this forum who have Winamp working fine on Vista.
So it is not going to be a Vista only issue.
This is going to be caused by a *combination* of problems.
Note: You are using an onboard soundcard.
These can have pretty basic drivers.
The report in the Event Log is pointing at a sound issue - so chasing for the drivers made sense.
Now we know you have the latest, there may not be many more options to try out.
I found this note via Google:
http://technicallyeasy.net/2009/03/...high-cpu-usage/
ht tp://technicallyeasy.net/2009/03/fix-audiodgexe-high-cpu-usage/
Basically - it suggests turning off the Effects of that Realtek chip.
This seems sensible to me and worth a try.
Personally, I would just go straight out and buy a PCI Express sound card.
You can grab one for £35 or so and it will avoid this problem.
This Vista PC I am using here is on the 64-bit OS and happily running a Creative Xi-Fi.
It has never caused me a problem with Winamp.

First let me apologise for being insulting, this is frustrating the hell out of, blame it on PMS
And omg man Norton McAfee, I love my PC, and in the 13+ years I have been online my AVS has never let a nasty in (they knock on the door but are turned away).
Up until I installed Vista I have always used PC-Cillin, but the user friendliness of Trendmicro has deteriorated, as each new version has been brought out.
I currently have Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 installed.
The only good Norton product is a dead one lolz joking.
No there System Works is the only good thing they have made.
Yes also to the Nforce drivers, have downloaded both from the Nvidia site and the Gigabyte site, once again Vista kicked and screamed during the install, so I have rolled them back also.
My question I guess is WHY NOW???
Why I am having trouble with the audio now after installing Vista has this problem occurred.
I have a question for you, do you shut down your PC everynight?
If the answer is yes, can I ask you to try something?
Namely keep music playing open a couple of applications, and let your PC stay awake for 24 - 48 hours.
It has been suggested to me by a PC Tech (while hunting for a sound card), that vista unlike Win2k, does not like having applications open for any vast amount of time.
If you could do that for me please and get back with any crashes (should they occur), it will at least rule out one problem.

This PC is left on a LOT.
The majority of the time, it is only kicked into sleep at night.
Currently "system idle process" has run for 434 hours according to task manager.
There will be regular times when it is left on 24\7 for days.
Currently it has been on since Monday.
I use numerous long running programs on here.
For example, torrenting or the more intense recording of the video stream of NASA TV.
This will mean having the same bit of software running for between 10 to 14 days straight with it recording huge chunks.
Some recordings can be nine hour blocks (for example a space walk).
So I have plenty of software that runs on this PC more than 24 hours.
Unless you know that PC Tech personally, there are some strange theories I have heard around about Vista.
It is a bit like when XP first came out and everyone hated it.
It makes me laugh at the reaction to change out there.
Some people don't like to move on.
(This is NOT going to get into one of the same Vista bashing threads.
No point)
Personally, I think that guys comment about long running programs not working on Vista is ludicrous.
It is also not relevant to this current audio issue.
=+=+
Frustration - don't worry about it.
Just remember that anonymous people on forums are helping from their own spare time.
=+=+
13 years on line?
ARF!! I remember the 300baud modem that got me onto Prestel in 1981....
Eek!!
=+=+
Norton - well Symantec really.
They just bought in anything they wanted.
And Ghost is the only thing I still use.
=+=+
I also use Eset NOD32 antivirus (they need to change that name on a 64bit PC really...
)

This keeps confusing me.
Why can you not install driver updates on your PC?
What on earth does "Kicked and Screamed" mean?
Are these just UAC prompts?
OR is the install constantly failing for you?
And do you remember to turn off Kapersky during the installs.
The only difference with a driver install on Vista compared to W2K is that you are asked for (lots of) confirmations to make sure the process is correct.
In the old W2K days it was too easy to suffer from dll Hell and broken and badly written drivers.
Vista has just taken another step on from XP.
If you cannot install any drivers properly, and keep using System Restore, you may have to think about "starting again" with your Vista installation and rebuild it clean.
Reading between the lines of this post, I believe you may of listened to a few too many bits of odd advice from Mr PC Tech and his Anti-Vista rants.
For example - there is no need to turn off UAC.
Unless you install new programs every single hour of the day, you just don't need this disabled.
It does not cause any day to day issues.
I ONLY see it when I install a new program.
I have seen a couple of Vista PCs broken by the user trying to turn it into a Windows 98 PC.
This then, not surprisingly, caused problems for the machine and even more problems for the user.
All of the helpful (but different) user interface had been removed.
Even the toolbars turned into butt ugly Win95 style.
It is possible that some of these tweaks to turn things off has disabled something that Realtek were relying on during the driver install?
What kind of tweaks have you done to your Vista box?
Are you a Vista user on a Vista PC?
Or a Win2K user who has been forced onto Vista against their will?
(Though, I really would just nip out and buy a new sound card.
Nothing fancy needed, just a company that is updating its drivers.
I don't like Creative's drivers, but this X-Fi card of their I have installed is working fine.
If it doesn't work, take it back and "act blonde" saying it doesn't fit)

Another slightly random tangent.
Try the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.
This has solved various messed up audio issues for me on both XP and Vista.
Repairing and replacing broken codecs.
(As well as supplying things like RealPlayer and DivX without lots of advert laden players)
http://www.codecguide.com/download_...c_pack_mega.htm
ht tp://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_mega.htm
I choose the "Loads Of Stuff" install.
This may help, but it definitely won't harm anything.

It is always tricky talking to anonymous posters on a forum.
We never know each other or what level each other's knowledge is at.
So sorry for any daft \ patronising sounding questions.
I can see we are almost on the same page now.
(Apart from the fact I did run XP for years, and still have it on many of the machines in my house.
IMHO - XP is only 2K with a few extras.
Whereas Vista is a big leap onto new ground - which was far too wobbly before the first service pack.
Made especially bad by most of the idiot hardware companies not releasing decent drivers in time.
This is why I worry about the drivers on the Gigabyte website)
Bit of a pain that all your local computer stores know you.
Maybe wear a wig?
Or time to do an online order, and just open the box nice and careful.
Just don't include a photo when you order and they'll never know the hair colour.
It can be such a cheap answer to your headache.
And will sound better than the onboard chipset anyway.
Some "PC Techs" working in the local stores are very weird people.
Here in the UK is an awful high street store called PC World full of idiot salesmen who know next to nothing about computers and just talk bull to customers to make sure they get their sales commissions.
And it is funny - your last paragraph is just like me.
Happy to mess around with other people's PC, and charge them lots of cash for a reinstall, but end up with ancient installs of my own desktop OSs.
ARF!! (Though this PCs Vista days are numbered as I already have Win7 pencilled in to be installed very soon)
=+=+
Anyway - back on thread.
The errors from the driver installs are worrying.
If you use the nVidia and Realtek choices of driver, can you supply me with some of the error messages you are getting.
Lets see if we can make sense of those problems.

A random test idea...
Do you have a spare hard drive?
If yes, unplug your current hard drive.
Plug in this spare.
Then do a basic Vista install to it.
Apply all updates.
Install nVidia and Realtek latest drivers.
Install Winamp. Test.
(Note - with this test there would be no need to register that install of Vista as you get 90 days grace)
(If it was me, I'd of taken a Ghost image of the PC before putting the drivers on.
Letting me test other combinations)
At least this way you can do half of a reinstall without disrupting your main install.
And if there is no change - you can just flip back to your original hard disk.
I had a Gigabyte board a few months back doing daft unpredictable things.
I had to use the clone trick there while testing.
Finally came down to RMAing the board.
(Problems booting)
[This Winamp Forum is using really weird software.
Updates in an odd way.
And now seems to of totally lost one of my suggestions from earlier.
Weird.]

I will freely admit to being blonde when it comes to these error messages.
And as for a spare hard drive well I used to have one until it died.
(Also not quite true) I have another tower setup OS installed all my programmes in Win2k.
This tower I keep as a backup tower.
Just in case for whatever reason this shytes itself and dies.
On a completely different note I also have a laptop with Vista Home Premium installed on it.
It rarely gets used, it is just not fast enought for my liking, that and the keyboard on the laptop I find I am opening and closing windows all by accident.
That has never given me any grief.
Mind you having said that, it came preinstalled with Vista.
As for the soundcard, it has been something that I have been contemplating since the first winamp crash.
My only concern is, if I go out and buy a soundcard, here in Australia a very basic Vista compatible one retail for $100.
I install it and it fixes nothing, thats $100AUD I have just wasted

Ok batter I have found this on ebay CREATIVE SOUNDBLASTER X-Fi PCI 5.1 7.1 AUDIO SOUND CARD
URL submitted by user.
Now I realise I am trying to solve an audio problem here, however if you read down the list it mentions :- Internet connection required for Cyberlink PowerDVD download.
I have PowerDVD V8 Ultra already installed on mt PC.
Which leads me to my next question will this sound card and the current version of PowerDVD I have installed on my PC work nicely together?
Or are they going to argue?
From the googling I have been doing Cyberlink are only offering PowerDVD V6.
I have emailed Cyberlink asking if these two will get on with each other.
Gday I am considering purchasing CREATIVE SOUNDBLASTER X-Fi PCI 5.1 7.1 AUDIO SOUND CARD
Internet connection required for Cyberlink PowerDVD download.
For the above product.
I have Power DVD V8 Ultra installed already, and I would like to know if this sound card is compatible with Power DVD V8 Ultra
There response :- Dear Susan,
Thank you for contacting CyberLink Technical Support.
We understand your concern related with PowerDVD 8.
We suggest you to check the following link to get system requirement for running PowerDVD 8:
URL submitted by user.
Use the below mentioned link to get back to us for immediate response for your further queries:
The link refers to CPU's, GPU's, and no bloody mention what so ever of the soundcard.
You said you are using a Creative Xi-Fi, were you also required to have PowerDVD?

I have a had a busy weekend, so not had chance to look through the errors yet.
Will have a look on Monday
The Creative X-Fi PCI card - that is what I am using without any troubles here.
As to "PowerDVD" - this is like all bundled applications.
You don't have to install it if you don't want it.
Personally, I only install the drivers for the Creative card and none of the other crap that comes with it bundled on the CDs.
I use the Media Player Classic to watch DVDs.
(Though majority of DVDs I'll want on my HiFi Separates DVD player)
Full boring details:
My main Vista Desktop PC running the 64-bit Business OS has a Creative X-Fi PCI card in it using Creative's 64-bit drivers.
This is used for playing small bits and pieces of music and all those web videos, etc.
I'll often listen to bits and pieces through this copy of Winamp.
My main AUDIO setup is an XP PC using a Creative X-Fi PCI card.
This is connected via its Digital output to a Onkyo AV Amp pushing into full 5.1 Surround Sound speakers.
That PC has a TV Recording card in it, as well as Winamp connected to a server full of tunes.
K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is kept up to date on here and all videos played back through Media Player Classic.
I am having no noticeable problems with these Creative sound cards.
I have never seen the audio crash on this Vista PC.

Most bits of hardware come bundled with extra crud you don't need.
Printers, Video Cards, Sound Cards, etc.
The marketing man will say it "adds value".
I say it adds mess.
With PowerDVD it will be because that version is rigged up for Surround Sound \ Dolby \ etc.
If Creative include it, then they can say their card will help you play DVDs.
(Don't forget - XP's Media Player could not play DVDs "out of the box")
I would expect your version 8 will still handle the surround sound okay.
(And if you only have stereo speakers, it is irrelevant anyway)
Yeah to the buddy list if you like.
But please, when you reply on this forum, just use the Reply button and not the Quote: button every time.
I don't need to wade through what I said to you each time.
Or if you do need to Quote: something I said, trim down the text in your post to just the relevant bit you want to point out.

Interesting, I had vista running 24/7 as per the norm.
Yesterday I got up and yay winamp was still playing
Now I know with LCD Monitors screensavers are not necessary, however I like having my family pics as a screensaver.
Which wait for it ...
I am leading up to something.
I play Warcraft 3 The Frozen Throne, and of late have being experiencing huge lag spikes making the game unplayable.
I have been blaming my GeForce 9500GT (which is not a gaming card).
But worked fine under Win2k.
Which leads me another theory, when I got up this morning, my screensaver had died along with winamp.
Now Nvidia has released 191.07_desktop_win7_winvista_32bit_english_whql for my gaphics card, which I dutifully installed.
Hoping that this would fix the lag I was getting in Warcraft 3.
It didn't, so last nightI rolled back the drivers and once again let Vista decide what is best.
So now I am thinking perhaps it isn't my onboard sound that is the problem, I am now leaning towards my GPU dying slowly albeit but dying.
Reasoning behind this, while I had the latest Nvidia GPU drivers installed, winamp continued to play, no screensaver issues.
The only issue is the lag while playing Warcraft 3.

Screensavers - I have seen an older LCD monitor get the Taskbar image burned onto it.
So I still use the "screen blank" option of my screensaver.
Video card - the GeForce 9500GT isn't that old a card.
So shouldn't be causing you a problem.
I have a 9800 running on the v190.38 driver set.
All those error messages in Event Viewer are about the audio system.
AUDIODG.exe is the Vista program to look after your audio processing.
AUDIOENG.dll is also part of that process.
rtkapo.dll is one of the Realtek Audio drivers.
msvcrt.dll and ole32.dll are part of the OS.
This points loudly to me at the issues being in the sound card and its drivers.
(And nothing to do with your video card)
I'll get you some version numbers of these files from my PC so you can compare versions.
This also may be of interest.
Short couple of paragraphs on what audiodg.exe does written by one of the developers.
(I ignored the comments)

ht tp://blogs.msdn.com/larryosterman/archive/2007/01/31/what-is-audiodg-exe.aspx
Note - this program sits between Winamp and the Audio Hardware.
So any problems in the driver, will cause it to flip out.
Can I assume you have already tried the "clean install" with the deleting of all old settings?
Or have you brought a winamp.ini over from a W2K PC where the audio was handled in a very different way?
