The VideoLAN Forums • View topic - Audio but no video, xvid/mpga in .avi
I'm missing a filter/codec (I think this is the problem at least) at my mom's house because I can play this file on my home PC, but I'm hoping that I can luck out and someone can tell me what she needs.
Here is the log, hate to post so much of it but I really dont know enough to say which parts may be important.

No other players (MPC or Core) are even pulling up the video and I had a hell of a time getting this to work on my PC but its the only version I have available to me at the moment.
Per VLC's media info:
Audio=
Codec: mpga
Channels: 2
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
Bit Rate: 128
I've searched the forums for the past 45min but I couldn't find any applicable solutions, any advice is appreciated.

VLC is a self contained system that uses its own libraries to decode media files.
It is not like MPC or WMP 9 or 10 that use Windows Direct Show filters.
So you are not missing a codec.
VlC will play the file you are describing assuming the file itself is not corrupted.
So you might consider trying a few other files.
What version of VLC are you working with?
You also gave no indication about the machine (CPU and GPU)??
The Messages file that you sent does not appear complete.
But, what you did send seems to indicate that DirectX is not communicating with your video cards drivers.
You might consider running the DirectX Diagnostic utility.
If you are running XP with SP2 and VLC 0.8.4 you will need to be sure Windows is up to date, DirectX 9c is installed and you have the latest drivers for your video and sound card (dated at lease Oct.
04).
I have attached a general list of things to try that should show your problem.
OK!
Assuming that you have tried to reset the defaults or better yet erase the preferences directory.
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner (this is you)\Application Data\VLC Erase VLC, Application Data is a hidden directory so you will need to make it visible.
Reset can be accomplished external to VLC by going to Start Menu.
Programs, VideoLAN and selecting the reset icon or internal to VLC through Miscellaneous, Preferences, reset.
Then you must restart VLC.
You can try the following:
1.
Open VLC, Be sure you are in the wxWidgets mode, from the Settings pull down check Extend GUI, on the video tab check enable and then restore defaults.
Now try calling a file into VLC.
If you have just reset VLC I would not suspect this one.
2.
Some games store information by changing settings on your video card so it would be smart to reset your video card to its defaults for 3D, OpenGL and Overlay
3.
Change resolutions of your video card.
If you are at 1024x768 for example go to 800x600.
4.
Change color depths of your video card.
If you are at 32 bit color try 24 bit or 16 bit.
5.
Try shutting off the video acceleration inside VLC.
Miscellaneous, Preferences, Video, untick the Overlay box and save.
Now close VLC and restart.
Then try to call a file, within VLC.
6.
As a last resort, try opening VLC Miscellaneous, Preferences, Video, Output Modules and using the pull down to select "Windows GDI video output".
Then save, restart VLC and try to call a file.
Most of these things are tests to try to expose your problem.
So it is suggested to put things back the way it was if it had no change to your problem.
Also always call a file into VLC to rule out a possible Windows interface problem.

I get audio, but no sound.
I was having this problem before, so I ripped out all the codecs I could find, VLC, BSplayer, and even WMplayer, and then installed VLC only.
It seemed to fix the problem, but now it's doing it again.
Here's the message console:

Sorry about the doublepost.
Thought that since I could post w.o.
Login, I could edit too.
Just realised I forgot to post my DirectX info.
I reinstalled DirectX after getting these errors, but with no luck.
DirectDraw test results: Failure at step 9 (Creating primary surface): HRESULT = 0x887600e1 (error code)
Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 37 (SetCooperativeLevel to Fullscreen): HRESULT = 0x88760245 (error code)

Hi there:
I was having the same problem in a win NT computer, i did what DJ said in his point 6:
Quote: : 6.
As a last resort, try opening VLC Miscellaneous, Preferences, Video, Output Modules and using the pull down to select "Windows GDI video output".
Then save, restart VLC and try to call a file.
After that it worked fine, i can now play media files, so thanks a lot DJ

VLC is not a Direct Show player it uses its own libraries to decode media files.
It is VERY UNLIKELY that VLC will interfere with another program or another program will interfere with it.
Without knowing:
1.
Which Windows operating system?
2.
The machine type (CPU & GPU)?
3.
What version of VLC?
I can't help you beyond my original suggestions.
Have you tried these??
