Yale University to open up a dental school in 2013 - Now 4 Ivy League Dental !!! | Pre-Dental | Student Doctor Network

Heard this from at least 3 professors of Yale Medical School.

And a couple of Yale med students have confirmed that the ADA is visiting the school frequently these days to see whether this would be a possibilty. They will be running the dental school just as Harvard or Columbia - 2 years with the med school, and the rest of 2 years separately as a dental school. Wow, four prestigious Ivy League Schools (Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Penn) having dental schools!

This sounds really exciting.

Yale is not that prestigious in medicine.

Medicine = Yale is jail.

Funny you mention new dental school for 2013 because it is also in the financial plans for the University of South Florida.

I guess the 2013 entering class will have much more options when applying.

Yea ECU will be accepting applications July of 2010 for the new dental school, but it will probably only take NC residents like their medical school.

Yayyy

I guess I don't see the benefit of having an "ivy League" dental school over a regular school.

I have heard that they do pretty good on the didactic side of things but not as good on the clinical.

Also, whats the benefit of opening up more schools.

In talking with dentists, the more schools that they open up the more dentists that enter the field resulting in over-poplulation of dentists.

Maybe not right now, but later on in the future.

Agreed!

This just straight up isn't true.

Yale does have dental residencies at its hospital though.

Believe it or not, there's actually a nationwide shortage of dentists.

In fact, roughly 5,000 dentists are retiring every year and roughly 4,000 dentists are entering the work force, so the number of dentists in the USA drops every year.

True or not, has nothing to do with any of you, unless you're a undergrad freshman.

There's also nothing wrong with more options for aspiring dentists, considering how competitive the admissions process is.

I wish that UC San diego,UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara open new DSs too.

By this way new DSs will be located one of the best locations of US.

UC San Diego would be a good location, so many over the border patients lol

What about the fact that many dentists are suffering due to patients inability to receive dental coverage.

Every dentist I interned with as well as a dental lab said their businesses have been suffering.

Patients hold out until the pain is unbearable and still may not even go.

When it comes to dentistry money is not the priority;

However it is a very expensive profession with all the equipment and technology, so it is important to have a thriving business if you want to continue practicing.

I just think more dental schools is the last thing the nation needs right now.

I also don't think they should close any down.

I do know rural areas are struggling to keep dentists though.

Before I get attacked on my last post I will admit that just because their businesses have suffered over the last two years doesn't mean they are not making a sufficient living.

Wanted to clear that up.

I'm glad you've seen those things.

Doesn't change the fact that it is still one of the most desired places to go for medical school.

Yay Now with more US accredited dental schools from India, Korea, Mexico, and Yale/USF there will be more dentists!! Great, dilute the profession.

Instead of more dentists going to places like North Dakota, Montana, and Alaska like the ADA wants - more dentists will move into my town!!

Whoopee. Pretty soon dentistry will be like optometry in walmart!

This sounds really exciting. I guess.

If you enjoy wearing sweater vests and discussing polo game tactics. j/k (I applied to Columbia and Penn) Its funny how one person mentions something on these threads and the whole thing blows up within hours.

Haha good point. Rural areas are lacking dentist and I highly doubt Yale will feed into such areas.

The only problem is the areas that need dental schools don't necessarily have the money or funding to establish accredited programs

I am just happy and excited about more dental schools are being opened in the next couple years!!!

Quote: : UC San Diego would be a good location, so many over the border patients lol unfortunately that's not going to happen anytime soon. ucsd might open a law school w/in the next 5 years.
