New passport...visa etc. in old one. - Japan Forums
I'm an Australian passport holder and received my new (renewed) passport yesterday.
I want to do a quick trip o/s this week.
However, my visa and re-entry permit are still in my old passport.
Due to the national holidays I can't get to immigration.
Do I need to wait until the visa etc.
Is transferred to my new passport before I travel?
Or do I take both passports and show them even though one is now stamped "invalid"?
Anyone been in the same situation?
Thanks,
D

The guys at the airport are immigration officials.
They can grant entry permits on the spot and make all sorts of changes when necessary.
You have a valid visa and re-entry.
You will be fine.
Just take both passports and explain when you give them to the officer.
Don't wait for him to ask.

Lot of people have posted here before and have been in the same situation.
Show them both, your visa/ REP are still valid, (double check your REP) though the passport is not.
Apologise profusely if questioned, say you were sick or something and could not get to Immigration to have them transferred, and you'll do it straight away when you return.
Takes around 30 minutes to transfer them when you do get around to doing it.
Edit - you might find that Immigration at the Airport do not transfer visas/ REPs...

Thank you. I tried to do a search on here as I suspected people had been in this situation.
I don't know what is with the GP search function or if I'm just stupid, but it doesn't work always says I need four or more words in the search box when I put four bleeping words in the search box!
Aaah, anyway, thanks again for the replies.

I tried leaving once without a re-entry permit and they pointed out that I would lose my visa if I did so.
I explained how that was a problem and after 15 minutes and 4000 yen later, I had a single-entry permit in my passport.
I'm not recommending that you do your re-entry processing at the airport, but it *can* be done there.
Still, I'm sure it is completely at the officers' discretion - I wouldn't try demanding that they do it.
In the OP's case, he just received his new passport and he can show that.
It's a very understandable situation and I'm sure he will have no problems getting the immigration officers to assist him.

SHE!!!! Why do people automatically assume 'HE' on forums
Anyway, I do have a multiple re-entry permit and valid long-term visa, just in the old passport.
I might not go away as I don't want to deal with any hassle that may arise.
Thanks for the answers.
Appreciate it.

Uh, I think it means your words have to be more than 4 letters long.
You don't have to input 4 words.

Yeah, that`s fair enough.
Most of the posters on here are male, so unless you state that you are female or have a really girly avatar or user name - it is a pretty logical assumption.
It really makes no difference to your situation or the advice given, so I don`t think there was any need to make a big deal about it.
Maybe there should be a disclaimer like in books where they use one pronoun for ease of communication to let you know it can apply to either sex.
They are actually pretty cool at the immigration at the airport.
I once arrived with my old passport only and didn`t have any of my visa stamps.
That was a real f-up.
They called the airline staff and helped me get a flight out the next day, so I could go home and get the passport I needed.
Apart from their head shaking at my absolute stupidity, there was very little hassle.
This is a really understandable situation.
You cannot go to an immigration office that is not open.
As you are female, I would play the sincere and flustered girl.
Which is probably how you feel.
You really want to do the right thing, and you have everything there....but the situation was just against you and you don`t know what to do.
