AOL Update / Upgrade ...YYY
Hi :o)
Some of you that use AOL may have recently had an email from them saying...
Important Information : Update To Your Access Service
1/ Your Connectivity Software Will Be Upgraded.
2/ Your Connection Will Be Moved To Our New Network.
I have found out from the AOL Forum that this update is causing problems for some Vista users.
Well it could be more than just some :o(
After all...
How can people complain on a forum, if they have No Internet connection.
So!
My Question Is
Is anyone else here due this AOL update ?
Has anyone already had this AOL update ?
Has anyone had this AOL update....
And had problems ?
I would especially like to hear from Vista users that have had this update / Upgrade :o(
Thank You :o)

I had the connectivity manager thing in the taskbar do the upgrading for me - it hinted automatically.
Vista seemed fine with it.
If you have a router, apparently you have nothing to worry about.
I have noticed that the AOL software (9.0 VR) keep telling me to do another upgrade, but it never completes.
I don't think that's the upgrade the email refers to, though.

Hi :o)
Thanks for your reply!
I've had a look at the link you gave me - Yes!
That is the same email as mine.
Lots of people including myself, had an update a couple of months ago.
But I don't think it was the update I'm waiting for.
As the email came quite a long time after that update.
I have been back to the AOL forum today.
And I have noticed that most people complaining do seem to be on Dial Up.
I think I just got a bit scared..
When I kept hearing Vista being mentioned over and over again.
It's quite strange to think of someone having Vista - But still using dial up.
I do think this update is to do with AOL going LLU ( or Whatever!
)
You have got me worried about one thing though.
Lol
When I read your last post on the subject - You finished by saying....
>
Over the past two days my line speed has reduced to 0.8mbps!
It better not stay that way.
Please, Please tell me your speed went back to normal :o(
I've only just managed to get AOL to upgrade me to....
Up to 8Mbps £14.99 month ( £9.99 First 6 months )
At the moment I manage to get 6Mbps
So the thought of my speeds dropping down again - Scr aM

Yep, speed restored (to 2.8mbps).
I too upgraded to AOL Wireless, about 2 months ago.
I did it as a little "celebration" that my 6-month-long connection fault had seemed to have disappeared.
It turns out it's still there, and I think disconnections during the ADSL Max stabilisation period keep causing the speed to drop.
What sort of speed to you get stuck with outside of the stabilisation period?

Hi :o)
I'm not sure what you mean when you say...
>

>
What sort of speed to you get stuck with outside of the stabilisation period?
When I first set up my Router with my new Vista computer....
Because I didn't have an Install Disk - It took me a while to get the settings exactly right.
Vista didn't help much :o(
I think because I hadn't used Vista to set up my router....
One day I realised....
Vista had got me down as having 2 Routers :o(
When I looked at the available Networks to connect to....
Vista had my SSID ( Router Name ) listed.
But Vista had me connected to another one called Virtual Profile :o(
I thought I was going to have a heart attack!
I really thought for a while I was connected to someone else's Router :o(
But No....
It turned out My SSID and this Virtual Profile...
Were one and the same.
In the end I had to Delete the Network ( Router ) Called - Virtual Profile
I think I found it living in - Manage Wireless Networks
The other problem I had was
Even though I knew my MTU setting was probably wrong for AOL.
I stupidly thought I had to go into the registry to change it.
I was getting a lot of disconnections from the Internet at that time :o(
But as my speeds were OK....
( I was on - AOL up to 2Mbps at the time )
I decided to leave the MTU Setting alone.
Then just a few days before Christmas...
AOL upgraded me to - up to 8Mbps :o)
I waited a few days but nothing seemed any different :o(
I Was So Gutted!
I thought...
Is it because it's Christmas - AOL are slower at sorting things out.
OR
Am I only ever going to be able to get 2Mbps
Then a few days later I realised....
I didn't need to go into the registry to change the MTU setting.
I found I could change it in the router :o)
I logged in to my router...
On the left hand side menu...
Clicked on WAN
Changed the MTU setting from 1492 to 1450 (AOL's Requirement)
I then completely rebooted!
Like this....
I turned off my PC.
Turned off my Netgear Router.
Waited 5 minutes
Turned on the router....
And waited 5 minutes for it to completely boot up.
Then I turned my PC back on.
I checked what my Router said my speeds were...
Download 8160Kbps
Upload 448Kbps
And then I checked my speed again with the Channel 5 Gadget Show tester ....
Download 6290 Kbps
Upload 360 Kbps
I was well amazed at the difference in my download speed :o)
Obviously....
My speed goes up and down slightly at different times of day.
I did manage to reach 7???Kbps once ( Can't remember exact figure )
Other AOL settings you should check your Router is set right with
Connection protocol : PPPoE
ATM Encapsulation Type : LLC
VPI : 0
VCI : 38
MTU : 1450
I only get disconnected once in a while now :o)
And I'm dam sure that is to do with my horrid neighbour trying to connect to my router.
I know I've waffled on a bit....
But I hope I've said something that might help :o)

My MTU was also 1492, so I've just changed that to 1450.
I had it set to 'PPoA (over ATM)' because in the past I've gained knowledge that the BT network operates best for your line when using that method (because the network is ATM based.
But I've reverted it back to 'PPoE' for you.
I'll do a reboot in a bit.
When you're on ADSL Max (the 'up to 8mbps' services, also known as ADSL2), for the first 10 days after router boot your line enters a stabilisation period.
What happens is:
1.) exchange tests line, then comes up with a max.
Speed the line can take to test, which is then implemented [e.g.
7mbps]
2.) router keeps an eye on the connection for a few days, then lowers the speed to what IT thinks is the highest speed the line can cope with [e.g.
4.1mbps]
3.) exchange, after a few days, lowers the speed to a really low extremity [e.g.
0.9mbps]
4.) at the end of the 10 days, router and exchange use a hybrid communcation method to decide what speed to keep your line on [e.g.
3mbps]
I think that what's happening for me is, whenever I'm in a stabilisation period, I have loads of disconnections - caused by a line fault I have - which make the exchange/my router think that my line is unstable at higher speeds.

I'm going to restart my router now (I'll leave it unplugged for 5 mins like you).
But I doubt I'll get as high a speed as you because I leave about 2 or 3 miles away from the exchange.

Just done what you said and the speed tester at www.thinkbroadband.org reports that I'm getting a downstream bandwidth of 3011kbps (it rounded this to 2.9mbps).
Not as impressive as your result!
The router says that its connection to the exchange has a downstremab bandwidth of 3744kbps but I guess that'll never show on the internet.
But my upload is impressive, although it's always around here: 0.4mbps.

Hi :o)
I always wondered what ADSL2 was - Thanks for letting me know :o)
I'm having a bad Internet day today :o(
My speeds are fine...
But I've been disconnected 3 times today.
I'm not sure if it's my Horrid neighbours - With their Super Strong Signal
OR
The Super Strong Winds Outside
OR
AOL playing games their end ( I'll be glad when this AOL Update / Upgrade is over with )
I'm sorry you couldn't get your speeds any faster :o(
I guess it was worth a try though :o)

I'll keep you updated with the speed though - you could have worked miracles

I have the AOL 8meg service and thought I would check my router (Netgear DG834N) settings after reading this thread.
It's set up as follows
Protocol : PPPoA
ATM type VC-Based
VPI : 0
VCI : 38
MTU : 1400
The downstream speed is showing as 6576 Kbps, and the upstream as 446Kbps, after a router uptime of over 780 hours (around 34 days).
This was when I replaced the router and it's never dropped the connection since.
Just thought I would post this as my settings are very different from yours but still seem to work well.

Hi :o)
For some reason Netgear routers seem to set themselves up with the opposite settings to what AOL ask for.
The AOL settings I gave - Came from two sources....
1/ A little instruction book I got from AOL
It came with my first Netgear router from AOL
( It was in case you wanted or needed to set the router up yourself )
2/ Also from a AOL help page.
I can't remember exactly how I got to it ( I will have another look )
But the title of it was
What are the essential settings for connecting to AOL Broadband .
Now strangely :o(
If you go to the Netgear website....
The settings they say for AOL are the same as your router.
The opposite of what AOL say :o(
I don't know if this is because AOL in the USA has different settings.
OR
Could Netgear have got the AOL settings wrong
OR
Would AOL have got there own settings wrong - Surely to God...
Not!
Can I ask....
Did you install your router yourself.
OR
Did you use a Netgear install disk.
OR
Did you use the AOL Easy Install Disk
If you did use the AOL Easy Install Disk ....
That would make things really interesting.
As my little AOL Router instruction book....
Came with an AOL Netgear Router & Easy Install Disk.
In my router...
My Downstream shows as 8160Kbps / Upstream 448Kbps.
But when I test my speed....
It's more like this : Downstream 6288Kbps / Upstream 360Kbps
Please let me know if you used the AOL Easy Install Disk.
If you did...
AOL have got some questions to answer.
Do you think we'd ever get an answer :o)
I wish to god....
When I had my Netgear Router set up with my old XP.
Installed with the AOL Easy Install Disk.
I had taken a lot more notice of the settings.
But if we can't trust AOL to give us the correct settings....
Who can we trust :o(
|

|
Back Again :o)
I found it!
Starting from the AOL Home Page....
1/ In the left hand menu....
Click On - HELP
2/ In the left hand menu....
Click On - BROARDBAND
3/ Under the Title HOME NETWORKING ....
Click On - Getting Started
4/ Under the Title POPULAR HOME NETWORKING TOPICS ....
Click On - More Home Networking Topics
5/ From the HOME NETWORKING list of topics....
Click on - What Settings do I need to connect my Router to AOL.
Now I have noticed one setting where AOL do seem to contradict themselves - MTU
If you follow the same instructions!
But this time
5* When you get to the HOME NETWORKING list of topics....
Click On - More Home Networking Topics
6* Under the Title SETTING UP HOME NETWORKING ....
Click On - What is an MTU setting and how can I change it.
AOL will then tell us it should be 1400
However....
If you had chosen the title just one above What is an MTU setting and how can I change it.
You would have been back to - What Settings do I need to connect my Router to AOL.
Where AOL tells us the MTU should be 1450
I do believe from what people have told me....
AOL did used to use an MTU of 1400 in the past.
But now use an MTU of 1450 .
However....
Anyone having problems - It would be a good idea to try the MTU at 1400
But you know AOL....
How are we ever to know for sure :o(

Hi Kia picanto :o)
I've been thinking!
There is one more setting I think you should check is correct.
I'm 99% certain you probably have got it correct anyway :o)
But just in case....
1 / Log into your router
2 / In the left hand menu...
Click On - Basic Settings
Just under where it says Encapsulation - PPPoE
3 / Login ....
Make sure your email address is - Your Master AOL email address
( The email address and password AOL gave you when you signed up with them )
4 / Password ....
Make sure the password is - The Password For Your Master AOL email address
If you make any changes....
Remember to Click - APPLY
Remember to - LOG OUT
Here is some AOL info for you :o)
Are there special requirements for the screen name I use to set up my home network?
Yes.
The screen name you use for configuring your router to sign on to AOL must follow the following guidelines to avoid technical problems with your connection:
You will need to use your original master screen name to set up your router and to access the internet.
You must enter the full screen name in lower case
You must add @aol.com after the screen name
The screen name must not contain any spaces
For example, if your original master screen name is: Jack and Jill The router setup for this screen name should be: jackandjill@aol.com
