[AMD] Microsoft forcing display drivers "down"date with Windows Update - Beyond3D Forum
Er...anyone noticed MS Auto Updater for Windows is now installing older display drivers over your updated ones?
Cat 9.9 becomes Cat 9.7 after a reboot with Automatic Update at default.
Dave could you kindly shoot an email to AMD Windows division and inform them of this bug, it is causing game crashes reporting "missing" display drivers.

Not happening on any of my machines?
On my laptop I have a recommended update of an older driver, but windows doesn't automatically select that for updates because it's not critical.
Regards,
SB

http://support.microsoft.com/select/?target=hub Neither of the links give any useful info so I 'upgraded' to see what it was & found it to be Cat 9.7, so reinstalled 9.9.

I don't find windows update too be all that smart.
It thinks my Sapphire 4890 is an Asus one.
I guess because my mother board is Asus, I don't know.
Weird. Don't ever let windows do the driver shopping for you.
It just causes problems.

That's true and that's what happen for me last month , however 2 days ago microsoft put up a big thursday updates and somehow older display drivers got sneaked in with the bunch...
Please check your drivers again if you have applied updates 24hours ago.
One of the best way is to start the Cat 9.9 CIM, it will inform you if you have "missing" display drivers.
If you are ok, just cancel the CIM installation.
Does it happens to Nvidia display drivers too?
Please check everyone.

Enjoy your C:\AMD folder too.
Comes with OpenCL driver.
As for the problem, according to this post over at Rage3D it's because the 9.9 driver is actually a beta.

That makes sense Humus.
Update will attempt to install over nVidia betas also.
I F@H, so I have update set to notify me but not install.

Not only does it make sense, i have experienced Catalyst profile switching locking up after a game.
I have a few profiles that i switched between desktop and games, what do you know after using 9.9, my short cut switching no longer work as it used to.
Wonder why ATI release a beta driver package as an "official" update...

I assume Vista ones are not beta?
Also I recommend to set updates to notification.

Well, Vista hasn't attempted to downgrade my drivers at least, so I assume it's just Win7.

Last night's update:
Took my 9.9 to 9.7 ....
So off goes Microsoft's Update automation features.
I have a HD 4770 so maybe it has something to what with what specific model of graphics card you have.

If I install non-WHQL drivers (that are still digitally signed), my Vista 64 will attempt to "update" them via Windows Update.
I assume this may be something similar?

Just happend to me as well....
Windows 7 RC
ATI 4850
Had 9.9 - taken me back to 9.7...
I have updates set to "For Windows only".

It is a "windows" update.
Other applications means things like Office, SQL etc.

Yeah, but it is strange...
I have another old PC with a HD2XXX card in it running Vista and the driver update appears under 'Optional' updates, and so doesn't update automatically.
This is the first time I've ever had graphics card driver updates installed automatically by Windows Update.
Looks like it could be a Windows 7 thing.

I suppose if you already have a WHQL driver installed it's considered optional, and otherwise it's considered a vital upgrade to get a WHQL driver installed, whether older or not.

You can turn off automatic Driver downloads specifically.
