Library of Objects for Hidden Object games - Indiegamer Developer Discussion Boards
Does anyone know if there are any reasonably priced commercial libraries available of objects for use in Hidden Object games?

I do know that some HO games (if not all) list their sources under the credits section.
If no one has a solid answer you could get a few demos and check it out.

Google for Royalty Free photos and clip art.
There are vendors who sell CD collections (well, they did years ago) and some of them are just collections of objects.

JPoag,
if I correctly understand the terms of use http://www.photoobjects.net/en/company/terms , we may not use this content for commercial use.
Am I right?

What they don't want you doing is ripping off their database, putting it on a CD (or where ever else) and selling to people as a Image database.
There is a reason for the duality, if you read closely what Desktop Gaming posted, you can use the images as a Design Element in games.
Design element means that it is a part of the program and not the product of the program.

When I looked you also weren't allowed to use the subscription service for games.
Will have a look again...

I don't know, man.
That sounds like a lot of double talk.
I guess someone should shoot them an email.
Worst that could happen is they re-write the first section saying you can.

Most royalty free sound and image vendors are concerned about games where the customer buys the game, looks in the installation directory and low and behold, entire directories of WAV, MP3 or JPG images for the taking (which is the bread and butter of the original vendor).
They want such media, incorporated into the software in a way where it's inaccessible to the end consumer (ie: Modified and manipulated into other imagery;
Embedded into the EXE, or a "wad" file;
Or encrypted)

Why don't they simply say so

See, most games pak their files anyways.
In recent years, they've even begun encrypting the PAKs.
Our most recent game has like 2000+ assets.
Loading from a memory mapped Pack file is a LOT faster than the overhead of opening/closing each file individually.

If you're unsure just email them, tell them what you're doing and see what their response is.
I wouldn't want to sign up for a subscription, use the items and then find out when a lawyer comes knocking that I'm in breach of the T&C.

Lloyd,
Clipart.com has a big selection of photo objects.
We used them in our HO games and I have seen them in many other HO games.
I have personally called Jupiterimages (owners of clipart.com) to ask them about the using their images in our game.
It is fine as long as the end user cannot extract the image files from you game.
Jupiterimages is also the owner of the above mentioned photoobjects.net however, those images are much higher resolution with alpha channels and much higher priced.
They have the exact same images on clipart.com but a lower resolution.
I have noticed that many HO games are also using 3D rendered environments and objects but I have yet to find any reasonably priced libraries to use.
Hope this helps,
Mike

Hey Mike
Did you agree a different licensing agreement as that's not what their current ToS say.
Quote: : E.
Permitted Uses. You may, subject to Section 1(F) below:
II
Use the Image(s) in any print or electronic media (except in computer software and electronic video and computer games which require a separate license.
See Section F(IX) below), including advertising and editorial use, provided such use is not intended to allow the re-distribution, re-use of the Image(s) or access to the image(s) apart from a product or service.
Quote: : F.
Prohibited Uses. You may NOT:
IX
Use the Images(s) as part of a product in any electronic format intended for multiple distribution or licensing including, without limitation, templates, Web site templates, software products, including computer and/or video games and game consoles, e-greetings, etc.
Contact templatelicense@jupiterimages.com to find out about a special license for such use.

They must have revised their license since we became subscribers to their service.
It's been almost 3 years since we signed up.
Originally, they said it was ok to use the images in a video game as long as they were not accessible to the end user.
I'm not sure why they would have changed it.
I'll have to contact them and see if we are grandfathered in.
I'll post it here if I find out any pertinent information.

I have contacted Jupiter Images and they have changed their license.
You now need to purchase an additional license for use of images in video games.
I don't want to post their Quote: s in a public forum, however, if anyone sends me a PM I will give the information.

Why not?
Or is it different for every game?

If Jupiter Images wanted their prices posted publicly, they would have done so on their website.
I'm just respecting their decision.
