PCQuest Forums • View topic - bsnl broadband dataone - mystery unexplored

Hi computer gurus, geeks, nerds, technocarts, Well finally i have decided to go for bsnl dataone broadband: But as always i have few queries and would be happy if anyone can come forward and share his/her wisdom: A little info: A little info about relevant hardware in my PC which i believe may help u in giving accuracte advice (i got the hardware details through device manager): "SmartLink 56K voice modem standrad 19200 bps modem" I think these are inbuilt modems on the motherboard also it shows: realtek RTL 8139 Family PCI Fast ethernet NIC (network adapters) MY QUESTIONS: 1.

The bsnl dataone broadband site says (among other things) "What kind of PC do I need to run ADSL? Network Interface Card(NIC) with 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port with RJ45 socket" How do i know whether my NIC is compatible with above (The link is http://www.bsnl.co.in/faq/faqans.php?pa ...

Y=Broadban d) 2. It seems that i have the option to purchase the adsl modem from them or of my own. Can anyone say what modem they provide and is it actually worth rs 2000? Or should i go for one from the market?

If yes which one? Also can the modem be usable in case in future i wish not to use bsnl dataone braodband? ( i visited the following link but unable to reach any decision http://www.dlink.co.in/dlink/Products/faxmodem.htm ) 3.

Is the installation very diffuclt (seems so as they charge rs 500) or can it be done by me...plz assume that i know how to surf net and check emails only... 4.

Also the faq says "I want to connect more than one computer to my Broadband line to share my internet connection.

How do I do this? Yes, if you choose the right broadband plan, you would be permitted to connect more than one computer.

However, all the users will share the bandwidth allocated to you.

" http://www.bsnl.co.in/service/dataone_tariff.htm I plan to take Business 1200 single user - it seems i cannot use it for two connections at home 5.

What is a HUb and why it is used? I know i am asking too many questions but i tried to contact bsnl "Where can I get help about DataOne service? You can call 24 hours helpline number: 1600 424 1600" You know what when i press 1 after dialling the above number, the call says its getting transferred to officer and then disconnects everytime i tried in last 4 days from kolkata. I hope someone will be able to throw light so that i can take the connection. thanks and regards, sincere sincereheart (at) rediffmail (dot) com

If yes which one? Hmm...it's better to purchase or rent it from them.

In the future you may want to disconnect your connection or the modem stops working(on it's own) then it's their headache not yours. Quote: : Also can the modem be usable in case in future i wish not to use bsnl dataone braodband? Depends.

If there are other ISPs providing ADSL connection in your city then you MAY be able to use it.

But thats highly unlikely. Quote: : 3.

To them. You can make a network of say 10 PCs and share your connection using your "home gateway".

They can't say a THING to you.

Take any plan and you'll be able to share the internet connection Ofcourse it can't be for commercial use. Quote: : 5.

What is a HUb and why it is used? It's used to connect multiple computers to a single network cable.

(Sorry for a crappy explanation.

I am tired ). Check it out on google.

You'll get tons of info.

BTW in todays world we dont use Hubs.

We use switches

Hi daj123 you r truly a "Grand Master" Quote: : Foo!

But plz guide me what do i need to do to be able to share internet connection with one more pc at home...

[/size] i am going to apply for bsnl dataone tommorow (monday) itself thanks again

If its just one computer then you can put two NICs in the PC where you would get the dataone connection and one NIC in the other PC.

You will also require a cross over cable (cat5).

The configuration part is rather simple.

I will explain it when you have put in the hardware.

Hey daj, u know what i went to bsnl local office to apply for dataone and guess what, in kolkata they r not supplying modem any more (atleast for the area which falls in my jurisdiction) and they have asked me to purchase any standard adsl modem. They will however provide the installation. Now daj please first guide me as to which adsl modem should i purchase. Waiting for ur reply, thanks

Pickup any Dlink ADSL modem.

I think the one MTNL provides is 502T.

If you want a better brand then go in for Netgear.

There are tons of manufacturers.

Quote: : There are tons of manufacturers. thats the problem... respectable honourable daj ji, you please say me which one should i buy i mean the company name and model number and i will purchase that without questions...just make sure i am able to connect two computers after taking dataone broadband with it... just say me the model number and company name.... thanks tonnes

I don't have a very good experience with ADSL modems.

But Dlink seems to a good company and all the people with MTNL ADSL don't seem to be complaining about their modems so I guess you can go in for Dlink 502T ADSL modem.

Finally as u said going for dlink 502T ADSL modem....will get back to u once i purchase that so that u can explain me how to connect two pcs by cross over configuration...thanks man... and hey buddy one more thing u said in ur previous post that "If its just one computer then you can put two NICs in the PC where you would get the dataone connection and one NIC in the other PC.

Quote: : finally as u said going for dlink 502T ADSL modem....will get back to u once i purchase... Don't buy it because I said so.

Remember, I don't have any experience with this product.

I just know about it because MTNL supplies this ADSL router with its connections.

I havent heard people complain about it but I really don't know if its good enough. Quote: : was just wondering what if i had say three pcs to be connected (i am sorry if i offend u with this q) If you buy the Dlink 504T ADSL router then you will get 4 10/100 ethernet ports so you could connect to your ADSL connection plus 4 PCs could use the same internet connection through the router!

But the 502T only has 1 USB port and 1 10/100 ethernet port.

So you can connect max 2 PCs to the router. Quote: : also please take a look at following pic by clicking...beyond my understanding...just ensuring u never missed something in suggesting me...thanks will come back soon with modem u said... According to the pic, Dlink 302G router / modem seems to have 2 ports to connect to different computers.

It seems to be a 802.11g wifi router.
