Wrestlehut's Champion for August, 2009 - The Quest For The Silver Medal - The Something Awful Forums
Despite losing his World Heavyweight Championship last month, CM Punk still completely dominated the monthly champion poll, with 52% of all votes cast going his way.
Last month was really more of a battle for second place, with former ECW Champion Tommy Dreamer only just managing to beat new champion Christian.
We are truly in the Summer of Punk.
Now it's time to figure out who was Wrestlehut's "Champion" for August.
Can Punk win a third month at the top (repeating his June/July/August trifecta from 2008?) or has another champion captured the hearts of Wrestlehut?
To be eligible, a wrestler needs to have held any of the currently Wrestlehut accepted title belts for at least one day of the month OR had at least one title defense since becoming Champion.
This means if someone wins the title on the last day of the month and defends it that night, they're eligible, and if they win the title on the first day of the month and don't defend it at all, they're eligible.
The only case where someone won't be eligible is if they win the title on the last day of the month and don't defend it.

Now onto the eligible contenders for the month just gone:
CM Punk (World Heavyweight Champion) - The Champ is back!
CM Punk promised the masses he would give them the champion they needed rather than the one they wanted.
Constantly belittling Jeff Hardy and delivering in spades both for promos AND matches, CM Punk got the monkey that was John Morrison off of his back and set his sights firmly on recapturing his belt and giving the fans a "true" role model.
Punkmanizing Hardy's neck was a step too far for Teddy Long, who gave Punk a title rematch at SummerSlam in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match - Jeff's specialty.
At SummerSlam, Punk and Jeff main evented in an incredibly brutal match that saw BOTH wrestlers go through tables, take chairshots and plunges off of ladders that were difficult to watch.
Finally, Jeff put himself out of commission with an amazing Super Swanton of Death through an announce table and was stretchered away.
Pulling clear when he saw a battered Punk climbing the ladder for the belt, Jeff was sent flying from the top of the ladder for one last bump as CM Punk regained his World Heavyweight Championship and celebrated cruelly by standing tall over Jeff's corpse.
But then the lights went out and when they came back, the Undertaker had returned, marking SummerSlam as his own.
After this, Punk took part in a similarly brutal cage match that put Jeff out of WWE and out of CM Punk's way.
Now the Straight Edge Superstar is on top of the world, his World Title back around his waist, the crowd firmly against him and an upcoming feud apparently coming with the legendary Undertaker.
It's a good time to be Punk, and he's a good bet to take the WH2K vote for the third month in a row.
Jeff Hardy (Former World Heavyweight Champion) - Jeff's title reign was overshadowed by Punk from beginning to end, but he was an integral part of the program and may just have "made" Punk with his efforts leading into a hiatus from WWE.
Proving all month long that he deserved the top spot he earned over more than a decade of working and improving his natural talent, Jeff went out on his back but lived up to his character's "Living for the moment" philosophy, despite kayfabe efforts by Triple H to make him take his opportunities when he had them or Punk's attempts to change his nature.
Whether you agree with his descision not to re-sign or not, you have to respect that Jeff is willing to take risks and do what he feels is right even if that means turning his back on guaranteed money and prestige.
But do you have to vote for him?
That's up to you to decide.
Christian (ECW Champion) - Christian beat Tommy and then retained his title, making him clearly the Alpha Dog in ECW.
But every hero needs a villain and no one is more of a villain than the Gentleman Villain himself, William Regal.
Assembling the Uranage Machines of Kozlov and Zeke as his Knights, Regal promised to destroy Christian and seemed to have the upper hand in all their encounters....
Until SummerSlam.
There, Christian - who despite being a face has never been averse to cheating - grabbed Regal as he moved to remove his robe in the corner and hit the Killswitch, pinning Regal in 8 seconds.
Regal had his revenge that night as Kozlov and Zeke beat Christian down and allowed Regal to put Christian into the Regal Stretch, and now Christian has to face off with the submission master at Breaking Point.
Christian's has taken beatings but given out verbal ones of his own, and beat Regal in 8 seconds.
Is that enough to get him your vote?
Austin Aries (ROH Champion) - The Ring Of Honor Champion is a great man - perhaps the greatest man - to ever be a time travelling porno-star from the 1970s who somehow ended up a wrestler in the early 21st Century.
As befitting a man of his stature, he has defended his title successfully against brooding endomorph Grizzly Redwood and slain the American Dragon, scaring him so badly that Danielson is now retreating into the wilds of WWE Developmental.
Now Austin Aries faces his most challenging opponent ever, the Black Knight of ROH, the Alpha AND the Omega - Kenny Omega!
Can Aries possibly defeat Kenny and his glorious golden curls?
Or will Omega make Aries' title reign "ST P!"?
Maybe this is your last chance to vote for Aries before Omega's inevitable rise to glory!
Randy Orton (WWE Champion) - Orton has changed from the Legend Killer to the Guest Host Pisser Offer, frequently getting in the faces of RAW's guest hosts each week.
Feuding with Cena over his WWE Title, Orton tried every trick in the book to retain his belt at SummerSlam, and each time was countermanded by a botching Lillian reporting back Vince McMahon's orders - if Randy got DQed then he lost the belt, if Randy got counted out he lost the belt, etc.
Finally a "crazed fan" rushed the ring while Randy was locked into the STF, and in the confusion that followed hit a RKO on Cena and finally retained his belt.
He ended the month by successfully turning Dusty Rhodes to his side in order to allow him to deliver a 3-1 beatdown on Cena, fought off DX and then RKO'ed Dusty right in front of Dusty's own son, Cody!
Have his slimy shenanigans endeared him to you?
If so, then vote for him.
If not, then don't!
Kurt Angle (TNA Champion) - In August, Kurt Angle managed to....
Seriously folks, if you vote for Kurt Angle at this point in his career, you're either a sadist, a masochist, or just pure evil.
The pill popping, girlfriend stalking, ex-wife clinging, allegedly physically abusive psycho continues his downward spiral after leaving WWE and joining TNA, and continues to be rewarded for his insanity by retaining the increasingly pathetic TNA World Heavyweight Title.
Vote for him, if you're a horrible human being.
Rey Mysterio (Comedy Option) - For roughly a year now, Rey Mysterio has been going through something of a renaissance in the ring.
Putting on some of the best matches he has had in years against a variety of opponents, Rey has captured the imagination of many.
Bringing prestige back to the tarnished Intercontinental Championship, Rey seemed a lock for at the very least a World Heavyweight Champion match at some point in the future.
And then he went and got himself suspended after being found to be using a painkiller without a prescription.
To make matters worse, Rey then gave an interview in Mexico in which he claimed he DID have a prescription but didn't have it on him and never got given a chance to produce it.
WWE of course was upset at his efforts at damage control with what seemed an obvious lie, and it appears that Rey may have dug his hole a little deeper in an effort to secure a new contract in Mexico if WWE happened to "let him go".
Even if nothing comes of that and he comes back in 30 days, it seems like it may be a long time before he works his way up to where he was before the suspension when he was one of the hottest things in WWE.
Drat it, Rey!

I love Rey, but getting wellness'd slightly lowers his standing in my eyes.
At least, I know there is a champion who will never go through what Rey has this week

Voted Jeff because it might be the last time for a while or ever, and I still mark for his "hey how about I killed myself and somehow my opponent" spots.
Plus what Chilly said.

I was going to vote Christian, because hey, it's FUCKIN' CHRISTIAN.
But Punk got rid of Jeff, so that put him over the edge for me.

I expected TOTAL DOMINATION but not to this extent, nobody else has even hit double digits yet and Punk has over 70% of the vote.

I demand MsChif as comedy option.
Seriously, she's held the SHIMMER title since April of 2008.
She's held her title longer than ALL OF THESE JOKE CHAMPIONS

You're free to make a Woman's champion poll!
And Jesus Christ, CM Punk is more dominant than Hulk Hogan in a match to put over Billy Kidman.

And you could even argue that jeff hardy is only second because punk's brought out the best in him.

Based on the usual number of votes these polls get, it's feasible that every single person who votes from this point on could ALL vote for Jeff Hardy (the current number 2) and CM Punk would STILL win the vote!
