Harry Potter' offshoot unveiled - Dark Lord Potter Forums
I see no other topics on this so..

Quote: : LONDON, England (AP) -- J.K.
Rowling has completed her first book not to feature teen wizard Harry Potter -- an illustrated collection of magical fairy stories titled "The Tales of Beedle the Bard."
Only seven copies of the book are being printed, Rowling said Thursday.
One will be auctioned next month to raise money for a children's charity, while the others have been given away as gifts.
Rowling drew the illustrations herself and provided the handwriting for the five stories that make up the collection of fairytales.
"The Tales of Beedle the Bard" is mentioned in the final Potter book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," as a gift left by headmaster Albus Dumbledore to Harry's friend Hermione, and provides clues that help destroy evil Lord Voldemort.
"'The Tales of Beedle the Bard' is really a distillation of the themes found in the Harry Potter books, and writing it has been the most wonderful way to say goodbye to a world I have loved and lived in for 17 years," Rowling said in a statement.
The volume, bound in brown morocco leather and mounted with silver and semiprecious stones, will be auctioned at Sotheby's on December 13 with a starting price of $62,000.
Proceeds will go to The Children's Voice, a charity that helps vulnerable children across Europe.
"Deathly Hallows," the seventh and final installment in Harry's adventures, was published in July.
The seven books have sold nearly 400 million copies and have been translated into 64 languages.
Rowling told the British Broadcasting Corp.
That the book of fairytales had helped her say goodbye to Harry's world.
"It's not about Harry, Ron and Hermione, but it comes from that world," she told BBC radio in an interview broadcast Thursday.
"So it's been therapeutic in a way."
Rowling said she was working on a new book, "a half-finished book for children that I think will probably be the next thing I publish."
On Wednesday, Rowling and the makers of the Harry Potter movies filed a lawsuit against RDR Books, a small U.S.
Publisher that plans to bring out a companion volume based on the Harry Potter Lexicon fan Web site.
Rowling has said she plans to produce her own encyclopedia of the wizarding world and says the book would infringe on her intellectual property rights.
I WANT MOAR MONEY!.
In other news that picture of her is rather disgusting.

That's an insult to my Narcissa.
Also, what is the point of writing a book if you are only going to allow one copy to be sold (auctioned, actually).
The other 6 copies are gifts.

$62,000...kind of like the icing on the cake, hmm?

Charity or not, my point still stands: Why bother writing a book if you only going to publish 7 copies?

She specifically said (several times over the past years) that she would not be doing a prequel.
When the fans kept begging for one, she even called it the Star Wars syndrome or something.

JKR is gonna waste all her HP money on hookers and blow, and will be forced to fire off a couple of shitty J&L romance books to cover the cost of rehab.
I can actually see how JKR can make money off of this Beedle bit.
6 copies are going to be 'given away'?
Yeah right. Give it a month or so and we'll see those 6 copies selling on Ebay, and JKR will be laughing her ass off because people were dumb enough to fall for such a publicity stunt.

For some reason it's really easy for me to picture Rowling shaking a cane above her head while shouting "get off mah intellectual property!"
While this new book may not be for the sake of money, it's pretty obvious she's grown addicted to the spotlight.
Now that the books are done she has to find other ways to attract attention.

I agree with this.
JKR has definitely become a whore for the spotlight and she is pulling stunts now to stay in it.
I think it's only a matter of time until we get the 8th Potter book, due to her need of more publicity.

I wonder if we'll see the book in some way?
Scans of the pages or something.

I find it funny that she's auctioning one book off, and giving the rest away.
If she had just published it and sold it to the public she could still give her portion of the sales to charity, and it'd probably be larger then the amount she will make on that one book.
And I'm willing to bet someone will get their hands on one of those seven copies and post scans of the entire book on some website.

You will have to hope the winner of the auction does put it up online or something, because I doubt those who received it as gifts will do so, unless they have her blessing (Yeah right...).

I think JKR is fast becoming the author-who-won't-shut-up.
If you want to donate to charity selling one book is IMO useless.
She should have auctioned the other 6 and given one as a gift....
Or donate 2% of what she's earned from the HP series.
