Which martial arts should i start off with? - Bodybuilding.com Forums

I want to start in martial arts but i dont know what i should do.

I can only take 1 class right now, so im thinking to take BJJ, but do you guys have any suggestions on what i should take?

Im lookin for self defense mainly but also to help lose some fat.

What options do you have?

I'd go Combat Sambo if possible...

If not BJJ, JJ, or Muay Thai would do. Or perhaps even boxing.

For getting into shape and self defence its very good.

Well i can do pretty much anything since im in new york.

Im more interested in the BJJ though because i saw a documentary on it and they have the Gracie Barra academy about 30 minutes away from here.

Go for it, in my opinion BJJ and other grappling styles like it will give you the best boost in your confidence to fight.

From there you can pick up striking much easier.

You have a better chance of winning a fight with decent grappling skills and no standup skills than vice versa.

If you're just doing it for fun then just pick whatever you want, but if you are doing it for self-defense do BJJ.

I personally think it's best to start with a striking style (TKD or particularly Muay Thai) and then move to BJJ or something similar.

I feel like I learn things in BJJ a lot faster than the average student because of my previous experience with martial arts.

BJJ is definitely a great option. Always check the school you're interested in joining, and observe/participate in one or two training sessions to ensure you like the training style they use.

The worst training you can start is the training you hate going to, because then you stop going.

. .

AT 15 you're young enough to hop onto the JV wrestling squad and do BJJ at the same time.

May as well take advantage of what is available to you

May as well take advantage of what is available to you well wrestling started like a month ago so its too late to do this year..but next year hopefully.

How does the belt system work in BJJ?

Just train, don't worry about that.

By the time you are anywhere near a blue belt (the second belt) you'll know all that stuff.

You'll be a white belt for quite a while though, and there's no shame in it. White Blue Purple Brown Black But it will take you literally YEARS to get a black belt in BJJ.

It is far slower than any other martial art (at least any that I have experience in).

Jiu jitsu is the base of mixed martial arts

Lets not be ignorant.

But what fun would that be?

Pffft, having an informed opinion.

WHo does that?

If your high school has a wrestling team I would start there.

BJJ is a good MA to start with though, it's the first one I took, you learn a lot quickly

I would start with boxing.

If the threadstarter had a clone of himself let's say and the original trained boxing while the clone trained in BJJ.

The clone will be in a fight with little rules.

Not sure what that means at all^ hah take up boxing.

If it's a self defence situation boxing will end it within the first couple stikes (not many street fights go past the first punch despite what you'd think) I get tired of everyone taking bjj, it was something i hoped for these past few years, i thought more people should be into MMA and the value of MA's is very important to society...

But now everyone's doing BJJ and i can't have a conversation about it with my buddies who actually know bjj without some jerkoff coming in and spouting off about armbars although don't let my scrooge like post change ur mind away from BJJ, it's by far my favorite MA, you learn alot quickly and it's very effective...

But boxing will do you more good in a random street fight (bjj you kinda have to take some punishment in some cases)

+1 about joining your schools wrestleing team.

Does Japanese jiu jitsu incorporate ground as well as striking?

Not really, it's quite a lot like Judo.

Judo actually rocks pretty hard come to think of it.

I trained in Judo in Kenya for a while, my teacher was a huge African guy that was also an incredible gymnast.

Some of the stuff he could do was amazing to watch.

Judo is another MA you could look into.

It's great for takedowns and takedown defense among other things.

Ground: bjj, judo or wrestling stand-up: boxing, muay thai or kyokushin karate

Japanese Jiu Jitsu includes joint locks and striking.

Yeah, you're right.
