google searches still being hijacked by yahoo - MajorGeeks Support Forums

Hi. I have posted about this before and was told to delete all things yahoo from computer, and set settings, etc.

I had already done this.

I am running Windows xp prof., serpack 2.

I am using ie6. My search engine has been set on Google forever, and I check this setting always and it is still on Google.

All things yahoo have long been removed from my computer.

I deleted one of my two free yahoo accounts, and 'opted out' of everything imaginable on the yahoo site.

I have run the registry cleaner you suggested, Superspyware, and malwarebytes antimalware, which is still on my computer and I run daily scans.

Inspite of all this, everytime I type something in the address bar, this address appears in the address bar: http://wwws.not-found-entry.com;

And I am taken to a yahoo page with the search results on it.

At the bottom of this yahoo page are the words"about this page" and when you click on that it takes you to a page that says you typed in a wrong address and so this is a service of yahoo to find your results.

This page says if you want to opt out of this 'service' click here.

You are then taken to another page that gives that says you can opt out but only by choosing one of the other search engines it has listed.

It tells you you can only stay opted out if you keep their cookies.

(I delete all cookies upon going off the net).

Then it tells you to close the window.

Then ie closes and you have to start it again. I do not understand why yahoo gets away with overriding my search engine preference, and forcing me to keep a cookie.

I do alot of research, and this is a constant time waster each time I go online.

I think this should be illegal.

Sheena

I've read recently where some ISPs are hijacking mistyped URLs.

Who is your ISP? Edit: The above is still relevant but I think I misread your post.

It's not about mistyped URLS is it? Try importing a reg file with the following content. PHP Code: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [ HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMain ] "Use Search Asst" = "no" "Search Page" = "http://www.google.com" "Search Bar" = "http://www.google.com/ie" [ HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSearchURL ] "" = "http://www.google.com/keyword/%s" "provider" = "gogl" [ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSearch ] "SearchAssistant" = "http://www.google.com/ie"

Hi Have you tried going into Tools >

Manage Addons >

Enable/Disable Addons to see if you have anything in there that has to do with Yahoo?

If you do, highlight it and disable it.

It wont let me edit my last post, Dont use that one.

Use this one. The php tag messed up the slashes. Quote: : Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] "Use Search Asst"="no" "Search Page"="http://www.google.com" "Search Bar"="http://www.google.com/ie" [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL] ""="http://www.google.com/keyword/%s" "provider"="gogl" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search] "SearchAssistant"="http://www.google.com/ie"

Capsha, I am a novice, trying to learn, have never pretended to be anything else.

I don't know what your post means.

Sorry. sheena

Thanks Laura. I did check that some time ago.

Nothing there. Sheena

Captsha, If you are telling me to edit my registry, I don't know enough to do that safely.

I don't use search assistant, google is set as my search engine;

I set that in "search-search the internet, where it gives you the option of using a classic search or search companion.

I opted for 'classic search'. Sheena

Maybe if you bring your computer up to date and install all the necessary updates from Microsoft ie sp3 and either ie7 or ie8 this may help resolve the security issues you are having with internet explorer ie 6 is pretty out dated

Laura just so I am 100% clear.

This is not for mistyped URLs correct?

I was just going by: " Inspite of all this, everytime I type something in the address bar, this address appears in the address bar: " @sheena...are you getting these when you enter in the correct url also?

Ok, I think I understand.

I saw that (wwws.not-found-entry.com) but for some reason I thought it wasn't an actual site.

I thought she was just saying she was getting a 404. Is your ISP Insight?

Hi. When I research I rarely type in a correct address.

I type in key words I want to find pertinent to my research topic.

When I 'opt out' of this so called yahoo 'service' I type in the same words, and google finds it like it always has.

This is not about correct addresses.

This is a hijacking.

I am surprised this is not bringing in more interest on this site, as I have seen posts elsewhere about this problem.

I think yahoo is going well beyond its boundaries.

Either that, or these ad laden search results its 'service' gives have been allowed by Google in some business deal? sheena

It's not Yahoo doing this it's the person/company getting payed by them. Again, is your ISP Insight Cable?

If I was the OP I'd go back to post # 8 from iwunderdownunder - using IE6 on an XP system leaves them open to literally 100s of critical security flaws that exist in it.

Frankly, no one should be using it, and even then only people on systems (Win98,ME etc) that cannot install IE7 and won't use something else. All this 'search by typing' in IE6 is highly risky. Update to IE7 at the very least as a priority.

Why does everybody always say that?

As soon as a security issue is discovered in IE6 it gets patched. Like this last bulletin: MS09-034 .

It affected all versions of IE that are still maintained...6, 7, &8. Firefox gets patched too.

It's architecture is the issue. It isn't built for today's net environment and it is flawed whatever patches it gets. Ask any Microsoft engineer if they would use IE6 on a system that meets the minimum requirements for IE7 and they would say 'Goodness, No!' They would even whisper to you, that on a system that cannot have IE7 - then they wouldn't use IE at all!

This is a Quote: from the Microsoft bulletin in the obove mentioned post by captcha " Recommendation.

The majority of customers have automatic updating enabled and will not need to take any action because this security update will be downloaded and installed automatically.

Customers who have not enabled automatic updating need to check for updates and install this update manually.

For information about specific configuration options in automatic updating, see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 294871.

" if the sheena has automatic updates switch on then internet explorer 6 would not be the issue she would have ie 7 a the least as ie 7 has been issued as a priority up date ages ago.as in my first suggestion it is always good policy to keep your computer up to date with all Microsoft updates after all there is no cost involved.

Oh, I agree you gotta keep your OS patched but IE7/8 is not really a patch.

It's more secure because of the anti phishing, more warnings and a few other tidbits.

It's still subject to the same security issues that affect all the MS browsers.

See MS08-045, MS08-058, MS08-073, MS09-019, and MS09-034.

That's all the security bulletins issued for IE since SP3 was released. So to say that "using IE6 on an XP system leaves them open to literally 100s of critical security flaws that exist in it" is false. The main thing with IE7/8 was conforming to web standards and tabbed browsing. BTW, having IE7/8 would not solve this girls problem.

I'm almost positive her ISP is hijacking.

I'm almost positive her ISP is hijacking. After doing some research online, it seems it's definitely her ISP causing the redirects for advertising dollars. Updating her browser or even switching does not appear (from what I've seen) to make a difference as I've seen people posing this question regarding Firefox also.

I forgot to mention... She can change her DNS servers so her 404's aren't hijacked anymore. 4.2.2.1 through 4.2.2.6 are good or Open DNS and opt-out of their hijacks (gotta keep your IP updated with Open for the opt-out to work).
