The Old King Is Dead Long Live The King - Mac Forums

I saw Coldplay at Sydney's Acer Arena last night and was totally blown away. It was quite simply brilliant. I have all four their albums but I was not shall we say a committed Coldplay fan.

I though they were good.

Well that's changed.

It's rare to go to a show and have your expectations not only exceeded but kicked to the next planet.

Usually concerts are a disappointment. I have seen lots of bands and artists including U2 (three times), oasis (five times), Green Day, Simply Red and many many more.

My favourite group oasis always, I have to say, are a total let down live.

U2 WERE good but the old king is dead .

Achtung Baby was amazing but the Vertigo show I saw at Sydney Olympic Stadium was a dud.

I would never go to see U2 again.

Bono is just up himself and too pompous -you get the feeling you should be honoured to see The Great U2 and just be in their presence. It's a totally humourless evening, just far too earnest. Well onto Coldplay. They are quite simply the Biggest band in the world and deservedly so.

I now realise what I had been missing.

They write fantastic songs and they can put on a show to fill a stadium or arena.

It's not all light shows and gimmicks, Just great great music.

Lovers In Japan out U2's U2 even. There was genuine hysteria there too, girls were screeming, really screeming and near the point to collapse.

Surreal to see. Fix You was amazing (I and everyone around me teared up I have to admit) and when Chris Martin performed The Hardest Part on a solo piano it was a spine tingling moment and again I was genuinely moved.

The Scientist I now realise is not just a catchy pop song but has another depth I didn't appreciate.

Again spine tingiling. Their songs are just perfect for arenas and stadia.

Viva La Vida was an incredible 20000 people sing along with everyone out of their seat.

Amazing amazing amazing.

Chris Martin engaged the audience, was humble and thanked everyone for joining them.

With u2 it is we are U2 you are very lucky people for us to perform in front of you.

U2 have lost their mantle.

Coldplay graciously played one of the new U2 songs just before they came on to set the scene.

I can't see U2 playing a Coldplay song before they go on. Seriously kill to get tickets to get to see Coldplay if they are coming somewhere near you.. I guarantee you won't regret it.

Probaly the best concert I have ever seen. These are some of the Youtube comments on the Sydney Shows just to show you I am not imagining it.

I just can't get over how brilliant it was.

AMAZING is all you can say, really. Quote: : I went i saw I loved They were freakin amazing, i went to josh pyke the next night but these guys....WOW they destroyed all good bands ive seen, even santana, Kudos to them and to u for recording it Quote: : The most amazing concert i have ever been too.

They are a fantastic band and i agree butterflies with tears of joy.Thankyou for the upload. Quote: : Freaking amazing concert.

Saw them last night.

Thankyou so much for the upload.

Quote: : went on the 14th, this song was AWESOME!!

Best concert everIt was an amazing performance!

Lovers in japan is so beautiful with the buterflies...

I can't stop crying for happiness!! Damn!!

I can't wait until august Quote: : such an amazing concert thank you so much for recording it. was such a magical night. Quote: : yeah, truly awesome evening.

Tight security at Acer Arena but still smuggled my camcorder through, lol..

Sorry, they do nothing for me, Martin's voice and pissy attitude get right up my nose, as does the fact they've stolen their sound from all the other "stadium" bands. I'm sure his lyrics are deep and meaningful, if by "deep and meaningful" you mean infantile and obvious... Good job we all have a choice huh?

When I said I hear another depth in Fix Ne I wasn't meaning it wase deep and meaningful in a pretentious psudo intellectual way.

No it's just a great love song and some of the lyrics struck a chord with me, that's all.

I hadn't really listened to their music before, just heard the catchy tunes. But to say Coldplays lyrics are infantile and obvious is way off the mark-yes you could say that of my favourite group, oasis, but certainly not of Coldplay. infantile and obvious? Quote: : And the hardest part[/url] Was letting go not taking part You really broke my heart And I tried to sing But I couldn't think of anything And that was the hardest part Most of his songs are love songs or about loss.

Nothing pretentious . I think Their lyrics are some of the best I have heard in a long while. And on the "They have stolen from the stadium bands thing" when ever any group gets really successful people accuse them of somehow cheating or stealing.

It happened to the Beatles (who were accused of stealing off the Black American Jazz and folk musicians-which they were probaly influenced by).

U2 certainly didn't invent that "stadium sound".

There were lots of groups in the UK doing the same thing- they openly cite The Who as a big influence.

Yes Coldplay have gone in the same direction but I think now they have elevated it to a whole new level and are making better music by far than U2. I have seen U2 three times and none were as good as that Coldplay concert on Saturday. Pissy attitude-Yes I tend to agree but he is far far better than Bono or Sting.

Chris Martin also comes over as a genuine nice down to earth bloke. After seeing Coldpaly I have gone from liking them to an absolute rabid fan.

I have been listening to all four of their albums and I can't think of a group or artist who has delivered such brilliant alums one afther the other.

They are all absolute classics and I think their latest will be a classis in teh same veign as Dark Side Of The Moon-it is flawless.

I'm sorry, same vein as Dark Side of the Moon? You jest surely, Coldplay have wet dreams about that kind of talent and quality. Flpyd's seminal album is still outselling the vast majority of the pretenders, and it's stay in the charts will never be matched...! For the record, U2 and Sting suck almost as bad as Coldplay in my book.

Although Sting's band usually includes a couple of world class musicians.

They all stole sound cues from The Who, Zep, Motown and the early stadium acts, Coldplay just plundered the back catalog a little more thoroughly than most. The worst thing about them isn't that they are rubbish, because blatantly they are not, the worst thing is that they, like the Spice Girls, are lauded as exceptional when the sad truth is they are very average.

I want my musical heroes to be god-like, not merely competent. As to your Quote: d lyrics, they bear no comparison to the real lyricist of musical history, it's high school stuff, juvenilia if you like. I'm sure they speak volumes to the masses who have been deprived of quality and have had second rate troubadours like Martin foisted on them as "genius", but that says more about the taste and breadth of experience of the audience that they are prepared to accept such simplistic dross as meaningful. Trust me, there are bands and artists out there infinitely more worthy of your time and praise.

Took the words right out of my mouth (and improved them!) WinterMute .

Firstly I have been listening to music "seriously" since the 70's (when I was in about 6) but really got interested in music in the early 80's.

The first single I ever brought was Prince When Doves Cry .

I have 1000's of albums including the credible serious cred bands like The Smiths , The Stone Roses , radiohead, blur, Prefab Sprout .

I have pop like ABBA, All Saints , The Spice Girls, Britney Spears, The Veronicas , Stadium Rock like oasis (my favourite band I have to say) Simple Minds, The Icicle Works (who were better than U2 I reckon) classic rock bands like The Who, Led Zep, Queen, even the Beatles, Pink Floyd.

The Floyd were derided in their day by the way for producing over produced indulgent music. Even Mozart was seen as merely peddling frivolous melodies for the masses and was never considered as a heavy weight composer for many years. I think Chris Martins lyrics are far from juvenile.

Really. They just are very real and not at all pretentious. ABBA too, who just wrote probably the classic pop songs of our time were hugely critisised and sneered at.

I have to say at school I was one of "the too cool for school" brigade who hated ABBA in public but secretly couldn't wait to hear Take Chance on me. I say now ABBA were brilliant. Just trying to say I am not a 13 year old girl.

I am a very hetero sexual male (not that there is anything wrong with it!) with a lovely wife.

I have listened to a lot of music. I honestly sincerely think coldplay are just brilliant.

Yes they are an easy target and I suggest your dislike of their music is based on your dislike of Chris Martin and what you think he represents.

All this bed wetting, wet dreams dia dribe is just meaningless.

So what do you mean he wets the bed as he lies next to Gwyneth?

I think Not. I think he probably has more balls than you.

He engaged a crowd or 20000 with consummate ease. Yes he is a sensitive soul but he writes all the better music for it.

So you are a macho man who looks down on us bed wetters as we lie in our own wee are you? Yes all these rock stars like Bono sting and Chris Martin don't do themselves any favours.

Yes I agree they are obnoxious but Bono is far more obnoxious than Chris Martin.

Chris Martin at least is genuine whereas you get the feeling Bono wants to be president of the world.I still don't know what he means with all these coloured tapes and rubber bands on his arms and fingers. It is pointless arguing about music but all I say is forget your prejudices about bet wetting and wet dreams and actually listen to all four of Colplays albums. You don't get to become the biggest selling artist whenever they have released albums by chance You can't fool the people all of the time. They are Brilliant. OK so what do you consider is good music.

Educate me. Hey I like what you like, you like what you like but seriously tell me what I should be listening to if you think I am deluding myself.

But I doubt you can convince me Coldplay are no good but I am all ears. I love a good discussion!

^ Easy tiger. Now I may not be able to write my own music but that is not a necessary component for me to know what I like in music and musicians. I can't convince you that Coldplay are mediocre any more than you can convince me that they aren't.

That's how opinions go.

There is no shame in that so I am not sure how your undercrackers got this twisted.

Until WinterMute comes and thrashes this post, you are free to enjoy what you like and I'll do the same.

Don't get me wrong. I feel exactly the same. I'd just love to continue this at the pub! Iv'e had many a discussion in my student days to the wee hours about music. I totally agree it is pointless.

Like trying to convince you that you should like blue not green.

In the end you agree to disagree but as the sun come sup in the halls of residence you realise its time to get to bed... It is fun though!

Seriously I want to be educated on what I should be listening to!!

This is fun. I am genuinely intersted in any suggestions May I suggest this Falling Down

I want to complain about the misleading title which gave me hope that scientists have successfully cloned Elvis!

But no, it's about the champions of mediocrity.

Hey ho...

Hey I want to play!! Coldplay are an amazing band live. I think if you see them live you will be convinced.

You should be listening to David Bowie I fear I can't contribute to this post, as I listen to trashy 80s metal / hair metal and electronic industrial.

IM ON A NIGHT TRAIIINN!!!!

READY TO CRASH AND BU Actually I really love Bowie's cover of Port of Amsterdam.

Yes Bowie is good, you can't deny that. I love Life On mars and Space oddity. I love trains and remember traveling from Dover to geneva one summer- brilliant. This may help pass the time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Jj0TPSanw0

Quote: : I love trains and remember traveling from Dover to geneva one summer- brilliant.

I believe the train he was referring to was one in a Guns'N'Roses lyric, not an actual train.

Kids today, eh? Back on topic: Coldplay - whiny tosh IMHO.

Sorry.

Wishy tosh, OK just WHAT should I be listening to then? Coldplay are brilliant, period. Live there is no better group.

I have seen U2, Green Day, oasis. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7OQS...eature=related

Quote: : Live there is no better group.

I have seen U2, Green Day, I've seen U2 (many many years ago) and Green Day (years go) live.

They were bloody awful. Coldplay are just dull drivel, more boring that either U2 and Green Day.

So god knows how poor they are live...

OK you say what you don't like but tell me what you do like- what great bands do you offer in place?

Quote: : OK you say what you don't like but tell me what you do like- what great bands do you offer in place?

If you rate U2 and Coldplay you'd hate pretty much anything I listen to...

Go on try me. As I said I have 1000's of CD;s..

I USED to rate U2 but now they are has beens.

That was the point of the thread title. Serioulsly suggest some music and I won't just dismiss it because you suggest it. I have opened myself up for critisism by saying that I think Coldplay are brilliant. It is easy to say they are crap but offer no alternative, Go on make a stand then.

What SUPERIOR music should I be listening to then?

I t is a reasonable question. Well I suggest Sarah Blasko

My main issue with Coldplay is that they're like a light product from a good brand.

It's a decent effort but you're just never gonna hit a massive sugar rush on nutrasweet. Everything about them just screams moderate.

Or more accurately, it politely states it, and that's basically the problem.

Their songs are full of mild melancholy and charming wit and modest enthusiasm and their emotional impact is therefore equally limited.

And of course the humble Chris Martin is the perfect frontman for this band.

He's just so gratifyingly normal . The op mentioned the genuinely exciting Stone Roses, which are officially the best band ever, so I can only imagine that your musical tastes have simply err..

Matured a bit over time.

No seriously I am with you on the roses, I still think they are an incredible band.

I have The first album (yes amazing) and also The second coming (not so amazing) They imploded too early and there was talk of a reunion but John Squire said he will "not desecrete the memory of the Stone Roses" The funny thing is that Coldplay were the darlings of the indy scene until they became massive then they became easy pickings, No I like good music and in my opinion Coldplay make incredible music. My favourite band oasis suffer from the same problem.

They were considered the "IT" band but then they became too popular for the inteligensa to like. I loved Sarah Blasko by the way- keep the suggestions coming.

I sugegst Kate Bush, perhaps the greatest artist of all time, well I certainly think so. She makes me weep. This womens work Just sublime

No idea if Martin wets the bed, but I think you need to lay off the Red Bull there mate. I'm an audio professional, I've fronted bands and recorded albums, but that doesn't have anything to do with my dislike of Coldplay. I've seen them live, just like I saw U2, Simple Minds, Prince, The Stones, Bowie, Zappa, Bob Marley, Rush, Led Zep, ACDC, Ozzie, Pearl Jam, Audioslave and any of the other bands that make Coldplay look like the grey, derivative whiners they actually are.

OK fair point, sorry don't mean to sound agressive, I have been to an oasis concert (Loch Lomand 97) where you had to duck from the falling bottles-it was insane.

So I have seen heavy groups.

OK not Led Zep so I take my hat off to you. I really don't think you have seen coldplay live though.

Like you I was expecting a bland night as my wife booked the tickets but seriousy I was blown away.

I know am a rabid fan I admit. Hey, lets not fall out just that I get quite passionate about my music and coldplay are so under rated.

All I say is just listen to them as George Michael says Without Prejudice
