Posted: Wed Jan 21, 2009 1:02 am Post subject: Re: A 'Responsibility' Era (21 ratings) Sirs, Would that sense of responsibility also extend to a state senator with a somewhat (by all accounts) shady land deal on a house purchase?

Would that also include his spouse with a job at a hospital which just happens to get quite a number of earmarks by that self same state senator, especially when her position with the hospital is now going unfilled as it is no longer needed? Just wondering when the tide will really turn and the rhetoric will wear thin. Kevin P.

Posted: Wed Jan 21, 2009 1:53 am Post subject: Re: A 'Responsibility' Era (14 ratings) Who was the last president to speak of responsibility? Mr.

Obama is probably the one and only. Two starting points are hereby suggested. Two hundred million Americans would like to be responsible for their own retirement funding.

As this is a societal good and our economy desperately needs more capital, these accounts should be tax free.

After billions have gone into these accounts Social Security can be saved.

It will be easier then. Secondly, a hundred million sets of parents would like to be financially responsible for the education of their children.

No one else is in any way accepting responsibility for educating the next generation of taxpayers.

With any combination of vouchers and credits (primarily at the state level), funding and responsibility will be linked together and lead us to a much smarter America. Dennis Duggan McMahon San Francisco

George W Bush 1st Term Inaugration Speech: (these are not the only references) America, at its best, is a place where personal responsibility is valued and expected. Encouraging responsibility is not a search for scapegoats, it is a call to conscience.

And though it requires sacrifice, it brings a deeper fulfillment.

We find the fullness of life not only in options, but in commitments.

And we find that children and community are the commitments that set us free. Our public interest depends on private character, on civic duty and family bonds and basic fairness, on uncounted, unhonored acts of decency which give direction to our freedom. Sometimes in life we are called to do great things.

But as a saint of our times has said, every day we are called to do small things with great love.

The most important tasks of a democracy are done by everyone. I will live and lead by these principles: to advance my convictions with civility, to pursue the public interest with courage, to speak for greater justice and compassion, to call for responsibility and try to live it as well. In all these ways, I will bring the values of our history to the care of our times. What you do is as important as anything government does.

I ask you to seek a common good beyond your comfort;

To defend needed reforms against easy attacks;

To serve your nation, beginning with your neighbor.

I ask you to be citizens: citizens, not spectators;

Citizens, not subjects;

Responsible citizens, building communities of service and a nation of character. Moving on to my comments about Obama.. I strongly resent this phony call for "Responsibility".

Responsibility.. Really?

We all know what this means....

"From each according to his abilities"..

That what he means by Responsibility.

That is also what he means when he says we need to grow up.

He's saying.. you selfish babies clutching onto your wallet and your old obsolete dogmas that your property and money belong to you.

Give it up! Spread the wealth around! I'll tell you one thing..

I've been responsible in my life.

LEAVE ME ALONE. Who the heck is this guy to demand a sacrifice from me? What is more cowardly than these idiotic politicians "bravely" calling for everyone to be taxed to death so that they could buy their voting blocs? When did Obama ever sacrifice or show responsibility?

How about his new-found brother found living in dirt in Africa ,surviving on US$10 a year. Or his illegal alien aunt found living on the dole in Boston. How about the miserliness of the Obama's pre-campaign charitable giving. How dare this fraud demand the govt force me to give more.

Mr. "care for the least of these" is a total fraud.

Mr "be my brother's keeper" is a liar. The Democrats cannot be so stupid as to believe their proposals for Multi-Trillion dollar bribery are going to help this country.

I refuse to believe these people are that stupid. They are trying to crush us.

They are going full-steam ahead on crashing the US Dollar.

(Yes, Bush screwed up.

And the Dems are more than happy to accelerate the budgetary nightmare) They want us with no energy, no money, no Liberty. People of America: Your civilization is at its end.

And so many of you don't even care. vincep1974@comcast.net

Individuals and corporations taking responsibility for their actions is the only way out of this economic mess.

We will get a test today of how sincere the new President is on this issue.

Will he continue to support Geithner, who is a poster child for personal irresponsibility?

Posted: Wed Jan 21, 2009 9:41 am Post subject: Re: A 'Responsibility' Era I would say loud and clear than a age of great socialism is for beging in States.

Nobody change fast, even in the presidency.

And Mr Obama is a role model of the new american society.

No more trickies, Mr Obama is a convinced socialist, likes most american are.

The problem with the mayority american peoples now is they are loosing their good principles, values and the good faith and morality. Most of the left media and the Hollywood culture are doing their fruits.

Obama is a taylor made figure from these media.

Poor, riches, vote for Obama.

Obama is today a "delicatesse" of the media. As a consequence, the mayority american people are entering in a corruption era.

That one could be explained in this reasonable point: they vote and they put the corrupt leaders in presidency and so on...it does no matter it is a black, islamist, white or latin, if they do not believe in Constitution, or not.

The important thing is that kind of politician have to do the same as they are trying to live: easy way, no working hard, be political correct, no morallity, no ethic, no values, no war (even if the world need to put order in, like fanatic muslims), no smoking, no drink coffe, no fat people.

All must to be mixed.

Multiculturalism is perfect!

If you do not agree, you are fire! Finally, when a population begins to corrup themself, they obligue and imposing, to a leader to act like the people likes.

The main problem in states now, it is not the leadership crises, it is the corruption in the mayority population. Julio Camino Caracas, Venezuela

I appreciate his call to "responsibility", which I am sure he believe in .

. . Except, of course for: Retirement -- Social Security and not private retirement savings Health Care -- Mandatory insurance under a comprehensive government program Banks -- Too big to fail Automotive industry -- Can't let the unions down Education -- Teachers union, too many votes Mortgages -- So what if you overbought, or bought at the top of the market I am sure other exceptions will come up, where responsibility is just too hard to bear. An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other. Ronald Reagan Government's first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives. Ronald Reagan Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it.

If it keeps moving, regulate it.

And if it stops moving, subsidize it. Ronald Reagan Governments tend not to solve problems, only to rearrange them. Ronald Reagan

"Mainlining" the Kool Aid.

I like this line the best - "Obama's first principles were harder to discern." Really Whether it be numbskulls or simply partisan cover, it's a very sad day.

You left out the operative "INTENTIONALLY." Don Schuster, Roswell, GA

Posted: Wed Jan 21, 2009 11:05 am Post subject: Re: A 'Responsibility' Era (5 ratings) For 20+ years brothers like Thomas Sowell and Bill Cosby have been teaching responsibilty to anyone that will listen. Irresponsible people have been happy to drown out these wise brothers, considering them just "oreos" and "uncle toms". So please spare me the assertion that Obama is some new, fresh "one and only". Which Obama supporters will begin the "era of responsibility"? Fans of Snoop Dog?

P-Diddy? Nelly? Are those that listened so fawningly to the President yesterday, suddenly going to become academically inclined a la the Cosby Show?

Or will they continue to protest with excuses like "SAT exams are culturally biased". Obama is likely in the same old Clintonian-Socialist mold: "We all have to have skin in the game" sounds to me like Obama means that I will share my neighbor's healthcare costs, no matter how my neighbor's lifestyle choices have differed from mine. Bill Clinton preached responsibility - he preached that we all had a responsibility to make housing affordable.

He forced us by threatening banks with charges of racism.

So banks were forced to lend money irresponsibly, to irresponsible people, in the name of social responsibility - and here we are. Make room Europe - we will soon be joining you in socialist mediocrity.

Even if nothing else happens that's certainly change!

Posted: Wed Jan 21, 2009 11:28 am Post subject: Re: A 'Responsibility' Era (4 ratings) Responsibility for what?

By whom? Without the specifics it is just an empty phrase to be interpreted in whatever way the listener pleases.

Based on his past rhetoric, I suspect Mr.

Obama wants me to be (more) responsible for the poor decisions and lack of self control of others.

Even worse, I fear he would like to see the government have more responsibility over dictating parts of my life (and wallet).

The best 'responsibility' he could push for in this 'new age' would be a little government fiscal responsibility. I'm not holding my breath. Chris Ash

Posted: Wed Jan 21, 2009 11:29 am Post subject: A 'Responsibility' Era (3 ratings) Inaugural speeches nothing more than a rite of passage for the American presidency.

They are designed to be bold, inspiring and visionary but they are not policy.

To truly understand where a leader intends to take a people you must first understand the background and the nature of the leader.

This for me is largely a question mark in regards to Mr.

Obama. He has developed close and long term relationships with people like Ayers, Rev Wright and other highly controversial figures but denies those associations when it threatens his image in the public eye.

As a senator he voted more “present” than “yea” or “nay.” He vowed to immediately pull our troops out of Iraq during the campaign but shockingly decided to keep Mr.

Gates as the Secretary of Defense.

It is therefore almost impossible to ascertain exactly what he means when he says most anything, including his call to the American people for a “new era of responsibility.” Mr.

Obama won the presidency largely on his slogan of “change,” yet what does that mean?

If you read his words and watch what he has done since his election it is quite clear that the “change” he brings is not reform to government nor is it limited government spending.

He calls on us to take responsibility for our actions while approving of the TARP program (aka $700 billion taxpayer dollars) and pushing further for perhaps the largest entitlement spending package in US history.

The change that is coming may be what our founding fathers most feared.

Posted: Wed Jan 21, 2009 11:50 am Post subject: Re: A 'Responsibility' Era (1 rating) At a time when many in the nation are wondering what “they” are going to do about the many problems we are facing, President Obama’s call for responsibility on the part of citizens should be inspiring.

Like Kennedy and Reagan, who reminded us when they took office that the people have a role to play, Obama’s words should continue to remind us that our voice, our actions and our choices are important. And let’s hope that when the time comes for the new administration to begin to put their mark on healthcare that they keep in mind the importance of personal responsibility for health.

The cries for universal insurance and various entitlements need to be balanced by people doing more to actually take care of their own health – to pay attention to what they eat, to focus on wellness, to work up a sweat a bit more often, and to realize that they are, in fact, responsible for their own health. Government would do well to focus as much on the “demand-side” of healthcare reform as they do on the “supply-side,” where too much attention is focused.

Posted: Wed Jan 21, 2009 12:00 pm Post subject: Re: A 'Responsibility' Era (3 ratings) Talk of responsibility is great, creating an entitlement driven America by enlarging government doesn't seem like the correct direction to move if you want people to be responsible for their own actions.

Poorly run lending and investment companies helped get us here and what do we do, use taxpayer money to bail them out so they can reward themselves with bonus' using our money.

That's showing them how to be responsible.

And while we're at it, let's give everyone except the most successful people a big fat tax cut while we're throwing away all this tax revenue at the banks and the big 3 auto makers.

Obama is correct, we need change.

I just hope this guy can deliver change because the failed policies that got us here are Washington business as usual and he's going to have a lot of pressure on him from the far left that put him into office to allow them to get theirs now.
