Slice & Dice: air combat over Japan, 1946... - Threedy Forums
Hello folks! I have never really posted here before, but some of you may remember me from other forums or from the first Digital Art Masters book.
Click for larger image.
It's been awhile since I created anything new, but last winter I got a big aviation art commission done.
This image is the first of over a dozen of images, both 3D scenes and 2D profile art, which I created for Ian Allan's upcoming book about Japanese x-planes in the popular Midland Publishing Secret Projects series.
I was lucky enough to be commissioned the front cover illustration, which is the image shown here.
It is also the first aviation art image I've made using Mental Ray.
I've dubbed the image "Slice & Dice".
The scene is entirely speculative and shows a what-if "1946" scenario high over Japan.
Having slashed their way through the ramjet-equipped P-51D Mustang escorts, a pair of Japanese Manshu Ki-98 fighters is diving on a formation of B-35 flying wing bombers.
At the time of Japanese surrender in August 1945, all three aircraft were very much in prototype status and none would ever become operational.
The Ki-98 was never finished and, though extensively test-flown, neither the B-35 nor the ramjet-equipped Mustang were found suitable for operational service.
Here is what the image looks like on the book cover:
More information about the book can be found here: http://www.ianallanpublishing.com/pr...at=1057&page=1
Once the book is released (planned for October this year), prints and t-shirts will become available on my new webshop at http://www.digitalaviationart.com and I will post more of the other artwork I created for it.
Some close-up details:
The Army Type 3 gunsight (based on the Revi 12C), the big Ho-204 37mm cannon and the Ho-5 12.7mm machine gun (based on the famous Browning M2 .50cal):
And finally a size comparison profile of the Ki-98 with the P-51D Mustang.
I couldn't quite fit the B-35 in there at the same scale!

Thanks for looking!
- Ronnie

I'm going to go very British here and say...
Blijum, delightfully gobsmacking!
Words can't describe how amazing that front page looks and if you never said it was 3D, I never would've believed it.
It looks like a painting!
Now any chance for a 1920x1200 wallpaper?

Absolutely stunning, beautiful modelling, texting, lighting and rendering.
These remind me very much of those incredibly beautiful Airfix paintings on the boxes for the models.
A very worthy frontpage plug and 5 stars from me, as mentioned if you'd not said it was 3D i'd have thought it was a gorgeous painting.
Well done....work to be proud of!
Kind Regards
CG.

Hey Christophe, good to see you here!!!
Yes very little happened over the last few years apart from parenthood(!!!), but I am glad to be "back"!
Tom, thank you very much for the front page plug!!!
Varsh - cheers ole' chap!
I won't be posting it any bigger online (I've seen too much of my work appear in Chinese magazines!) but you can always drop me a line and I'll see what I can do...!
And prints will become available in October...!
Glad you like it!
CG - the box top artwork of the likes of Roy Cross (Airfix), Roy Huxley (Matchbox) and especially Shigeo Koike (Hasegawa) has always been a great inspiration for me.
Having my work compared to theirs means a lot to me!
Thank you!
keraj37, below are some texture samples that may be of interest.
For the fuselage of the main subject I wrote a special "cigar unwrapping" MaxScript so have a minimal amount of seams (top and bottom only) and uniform texel density.
And as Varsh said, please check out my unwrapping tutorials for more info on the various techniques I use: http://tutorials.skyraider3d.com
Thanks very much everyone!!
Now for the texture samples:

THANKS GUYS!

I never knew about him till I saw this, and looking through the past work, I can't believe I didn't already!
Oh and as for the wallpaper, I can wholeheartedly understand seeing as this is work done for someone.
If I drop a PM would it be ok that way?
^_^
I think it's time I started working on a proper personal project!
