I read economics in a US target school.
Applied to the Hong Kong office of my bank and was an analyst in FICC (money markets).
There is no need for a finance background.
They teach you everything you need to know during training.

Justin:
Your major in university is not an issue.
Top priority would be your GPA.
Finance internships are looked upon very favourably especially in the current environment.
Last year, my (ex) firm hired most of the '09 IBD analyst class from the summer analyst pool.

Since you are studying in one of the 3 universities in Singapore, the banks should be holding recruiting events in your school.
Go to the events and network.
Get namecards, email addresses and make small talk with the people there.
Basically, if they remember you and they willl be more inclined to help you.
Resume wise, since you are still studying, try to get opportunites to display your leadership qualities.
It would also be good to demonstrate a early interest in finance (besides interest in the pay and prestige obviously) by taking more finance related classes and reading up on finance news.

Yep, its a whole package.
How you carry and present yourself is also crucial.
And the way you speak and articulate your points and views.
Try to read more financial insights..
The mainstream ones like Financial times www.FT.com , Wall street journal and also alternative views as well such as economic insights from www.secondopinion.asia and RGE Monitor started by Nouriel Roubini.
-to show you have a balanced understanding of a range of arguments and come up with
your own conclusion.
anyway, whether you get yr dream job, this preparation will help you in yr life as well as yr own personal investing in future.
Good luck
