FPOTM - Croaks on fastwhale - Take diet advice from a 260lb (120kg) man?
Wycco ---- Source: http://www.nbc5i.com/health/2835852/detail.html
Dr Fatkins medical records have now been released and...
Surprise, surprise, he died a very obese man 260lbs (120kg) with severe heart disease.
It just goes to show- if you want to lose weight, Eat Smart, fad diets have a price to pay.
In the last 5 years cases of gout and liver disease have increased.
(roughly mirroring the Atkins fad).
Gout in the US is up between 500-600% (source for that fact the radio- sorry, but I'm sure it can be found online).
I find it amusing all the people that start these fad diets like Fatkins and end up losing weight only to gain MORE back.
Eating nothing but proteins raises your blood acidity making you less able to withstand infection- and cause you to retain more calories when you do start eating sensibly again- Now, I learnt that in Biology before Fatkins came out.

Senninha ---- LOL!!
Thanks TC!
I love my carbohydrates...
Not quite sure about their overall fat content and its effects...
But ....
Mind I take the "eat what you want when you want it" diet...
And I always have!
Lol! Though I did get told by one of my flatmates the other day that I was being really healthy - student cooking vegetables?
:o I'm not sure I'm supposed to do that, right?!

DeadCat ---- ROFL, Read it on the news, there will sure be some people fasting tonight.
(even more stupid)
Ive also always loved my carbs, (mustve been from all the vegemite and cornflakes growing up) the wife and myself are also strong believers in eating a heavy variety of foods.
So far so good.
I just think its hella funny that this info has taken so long to surface.
Can anyone see a lawsuit coming on.
(in the US of course)

Worthless ---- My mother is a dietitian (I think I mentioned that before ???) and everytime someone asks her about Atkins she does this -->
[smiley=Doh.gif]
According to her (and the rest of modern science) moderation and (imagine!!!) excercise are the key to healthy lifestyle.
When you avoid a certain food type, you are eliminating the essential vitamins and minerals in said food types.
Seems like common sense to me.
Oh, and that "Dr.
Phil" idiot also has his own "diet plan." Apparently that moron is also overwieght.

Hroark ---- I actually eat healthier when I do Atkins.
I dont go overboard like most folks do who melt cheese and butter over all their food, eat pork-rinds and jerky all day just because "its allowed".
My older brother who yo-yos in his weight used to have the McDonalds Scrambled Eggs and Sausage breakfast (w/o the biscuit) every day when he did Atkins.
I used to question his judgement in his choice of meals and he would reply matter-of-factly "the Atkins diet says its OK." [smiley=headbang.gif]
People like those diets because the instructions are clear cut: "You can do this and you cant do that, dont worry about using your common sense."
I try to do sort-of a low-fat Atkins.
Lots of greens which my wife likes to cook by steaming to a crisp and lively (but a bit tasteless) green color, some fish, plenty of chicken breasts and about the only bad part would be a bit too much red meat (which I love).
To make it more effective, I also cut down on the wine.
:'(
over a year ago, I did it for two months, lost the 20lbs I had gained since I got married and then started doing it 3-4 days a week to keep it.
Mind you the other days, I do the see-food diet.
I see it and I eat it.
Its a balance, and it works for me, at least.

Glendo ---- the best methos is exercise for christs sakes.

You can eat NORMALLY if you burn it.

Mario ---- totally agree with Glendo.
the thing about exercise is that it can be fun.
Just find a game that you love to play.
As long as it makes you run alot, you are burning calories.
Over a period of time as your muscles develop, you burn more calories.
For me it's table tennis.
I just love the sport, and the best part is that my game has improved a lot since i started playing it.
is there a connection between myopia and obesity?
Just today i went for an eye check-up because my glasses broke, and my doc told me that my number has reduced.
Prior to when i started playing it just kept on increasing.
Then over the last couple of check-ups it remained static, and now it has reduced.
Maybe it's the game that forces you to move your eyes alot *shrug* whatever the reason, table tennis is definately good and a lot of fun.
Werner Schlager may just replace Michael Schumacher as my favourite athlete.
Watch a couple of his games, and you'll feel like playing a few round of TT.

Most of the people that i've seen attracted to the atkin's diet are those who do little or no exercise - if they do, it's most often walking - and only at a fairly leisurely pace (certainly not speed-walking)
congratulations to you, hroark (and my dad), for finding success with it, but most i've seen are life-long fad hoppers and as stated above, will probably be in court in 5-15 years sueing for the colon cancer they've contracted

Ya know,
I'm not a fan of the diet (obviously), although despite the long term health risks it has helped alot of people who were on it for a short period of time lose weight and ironically for some cholesterol.
But this guy who is now suing Atkins for the diet causing him to have high cholesterol is an idiot.
He watched his cholesterol sky rocket after being on the diet (as it does with 1 in 3 people)- and yet continued to stay on it.
To me, it is no different then then suing McDonalds for making you fat.
