Breast Cancer Topic: Need advice - Vitamins/Supplements and Tamox

For background...

I have not been diagnosed but I am on Tamox for high risk reasons after multiple findings (ALH/ADH/FEA and borderline LCIS cells found).

Most recent MRI still showing an area of concern, but waiting another 6 months to monitor changes.

Okay back to my question...

I want to take some sort of Vitamin either a multi or specific vitamin mix.

I don't know what supplements to take.

I have read so much on here and started making notes but got totally confused.

I figured I would start my own thread and see who chimed in.

I looked at a Woman's daily vitamin but it contained SOY and I thought SOY was a no-no on Tamox. So any thoughts By the way you all rock on here.

Karen

They recommend anyone with bc or high risk for bc to try to avoid soy.

I was diagnosed with LCIS almost 6 years ago and I also have family history (mom had ILC).

I finished my 5 years of tamox last fall and now am taking Evista for further prevention.

I continue my high risk surveilance of alternating mammos with MRIs every 6 months and breast exams on the opposite schedule.

I try to eat a healthy diet with a lot of fruits and veggies, very little red meat, low fat and I try to exercise  more.

My pcp isn't big on supplements, but I do take calcium with Vit D twice a day.

I would  check with your oncologist before taking any supplements. Anne "I don't know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future" Dx 9/5/2003, LCIS, Stage 0, 0/0 nodes

Anne, I knew you would respond.

You have helped me so much in my last 2 years.

I don't go back to the doctor until October.

I don't really exercise, I am a little over weight and don't really eat the best.

I don't eat junk food or fast food often.

I just don't like veges much.

I am trying to change my ways.

Deciding to take this Tamox was a hard decision for me.

The only SE I am having are severe mood swings.

I feel on edge often, lose control quickly and yell alot now.

I don't like that.

I am hoping it passes soon.

Please.

Anyone know anything about green tea supplements?

Do they give energy?

I purchased a book "The complete Natural medicine guide to Breasr Cancer" a practical manual for understanding prevention and care by Sat Dharam Kuar.

It was recommended by someone from another thread.

It is very good and covers vitamins herbs lifestyle and diet.I use it as by bible for diet. Dx 12/26/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage I, Grade 1, 0/1 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2-

About the Tamoxifen~ what worked for me when it made me very depressed emotional was to split the 20mg in half (it's scored) and take half in the am and half in the pm.

Or get your onc to prescribe 10mg 2x/day.

This may help your mood swings. About the vitamins~ I stopped taking a multi vite when I realized that some of the vitamins/minerals either void the other one or compete with each other.

On an ideal day :) I track my food at www.nutritiondata.com and have the individual supplements on hand that I don't usually get in day.

Like zinc for instance.

It's seldom that I reach the RDI on a daily basis so I will take a low dose zinc.

Sounds bothersome I guess but that's what works for me.

After a week or so of tracking your food you soon learn what you usually don't get and what you get tons of. About soy~ I stay clear of it but I know many who think it's fine.

If you don't like veggies it's hard to force yourself to eat 5-10 servings.

Perhaps a green drink of some sort daily would help.

Ked: I take DIM, pygenecol, and cat's claw and COQ10, as well as tamoxifen, not sure if I'm spelling them right but I did some research and also spoke with my local health food mgr.

He is great and knowledgeable and owns a store called healthy appetites which also has a great web site, healthyappetites.com.

I have horrible moodiness too, along with depression.

I refuse to add yet another drug to my regimen.

I am already on meds for diabetes, high blood pressure, gastric reflux, high cholesterol, fibromyalgia, etc.

My friend that I walk with told me she can tell when I'm on the tamoxifen and when I go off it because she said I never smile when I'm on the tamoxifen. Peeps Dx 6/20/2008, IDC, 1cm, Stage IIa, Grade 2, 1/2 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2-

Thank you peeps and everyone else that replied.

I am so pathetic.

I don't watch what I eat and don't work out.

I know I must do both and starting today not tomorrow etc.

I just don't do it.

I think there is a loose screw in my head.

I just finished my first bottle (59 more to go).

My fatigue is finally going away.

When I wake up in the morning I can't fall back to sleep.

That is a good thing.

The moodiness and down right bitchness is too much for me.

My sex drive is gone too and that doesn't help on the mood.

I really don't want to take anything else.

I have heard alot about COQ10 and will look for that.

I really just need someone to shoot me because nothing is shaking me up enough to get serious about my weight and my eating habits.

What is wrong with me.

That's a whole other forum right?

:) Take Care ladies.

Ked---green tea is supposed to be really good for you--it's an antioxidant--I've started drinking it hot and cold (diet iced green tea is really good).

I know it's so very hard to get started on  a weight loss program and an exercise program, but try setting your goals out small to start with so you won't get overwhelmed.

Take one day at a time, then build on it--go for a week, then 2 weeks, then soon you will be in a routine and it will come more naturally.

As you eat better and exercise, your energy level will pick up and you'll feel better.

Effexor is supposed to help with the mood swings and can be used with tamox. Anne "I don't know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future" Dx 9/5/2003, LCIS, Stage 0, 0/0 nodes

Ked: Don't be so hard on yourself.

I walk with my friend every day but we have an agreement.

Even if we don't feel like walking, if one of us calls, the other one has to go (unless we're sick or have a conflict).

We walk in all kinds of weather.

You should find a walking buddy in your neighborhood.

I can guarantee that there is another woman who would like to lose weight.

Do you have any friends close by? As far as the sex drive goes, tamoxifen ruins it.

It is surely a quality of life issue and the medical profession does not take it seriously.

It is very sad.  I think we need to keep talking about it to the drs.

I spoke with mine about it after I saw a study that said 50% of women said it was a side effect but the same study reported that 0.7% of the drs.

Said it was a problem.

I told my dr. that either the women were too embarassed to bring it up to the drs.

Or the drs. were blowing them off! Peeps Dx 6/20/2008, IDC, 1cm, Stage IIa, Grade 2, 1/2 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2-
