A new era for SEO and rich content, implications for mobile - Mobility.mobi Mobile Forum
Going through some old e-newsletters I found this HUGE news http://biz.yahoo.com/paidcontent/080...3_id.html?.v=1
Flash Search Being Enabled By Google and Yahoo
If you don't already know, Flash has been mostly avoided by many developers due to the simple fact that it's contents don't get indexed in the search engines unless you do a lot of workarounds like recreating all the same content in html.
Well now Adobe, Google and Yahoo have worked out how to get that content indexed.
HUGE!
So what does this have to do with mobile?
This-> http://www.adobe.com/mobile/ No, it's not their mobile website , it's their main page discussing their mobile content development tools.
With ever increasing numbers of flash enabled mobile devices this is an excellent way to deliver rich, device adaptable content to users and now is indexed by the SE's!
It's already been incorporated into BREW http://www.adobe.com/products/flashlite/brew/ and the number of flash enabled devices will only continue to grow.
I used to shun Flash because of the SEO problems, not any more.
Now to find out if Device Atlas can detect it.

Yea, .mobi and flash could be a beautiful partnership.
Here's another article on it http://www.imediaconnection.com/content/20032.asp

Hello,
Here is a link that shows phones that have flash lite installed
http://www.adobe.com/mobile/supporte.../handsets.html
...
But what most people dont realize is that even though the application is installed it isnt enabled and that is where the problem lies.
It takes rocket science to enable this.
Ill give you an example.
I own a blackberry pearl that i had to enable css stylesheets.
Last sunday i was at a business meeting and a client had a blackberry pearl and of course the css stylesheets were not enabled.
I proudly took the phone and tried to enable it.
The ordeal took over 15 minutes to complete and i have done this before.
Most people wont ever enable the application because it is buried deep inside the browser options
Cheers
Rob

I always thought Flash would be a great tool for the mobile - with animation you can convey a message that might be otherwise difficult to convey on a small screen.
The fact that Flash content will be indexed is great for websites big and small.
My main concern about Flash for the mobile is the number of handsets that can view it.
I know that Flash is used on a lot of devices for the device's own UI, but I don't know if that necessarily means that the web browser can view Flash files.
Amazingly, even the iPhone cannot view Flash.
Of course the day will come when all mobiles can handle Flash web pages, and the speed things are moving in mobile, that day will be sooner rather than later.

Rob Good insights Rob, thanks much.
I agree it's not good to go today but would you expect this issue to get better over time?

Hi Scandi,
Yes i certainly think as time progresses this will change.
I have been developing flash sites for alot of my web versions of mobi sites that in anticipation of a day i can use them for mobi versions of the sites.
It is a 10 second job to convert them from flash 8 to flash lite.
I have in fact been monitoring this list for over a year now i have found over 100 more phones added to this list the past 12 months.
But like i said ...
This doesnt neccesarily mean any of these phones will be able to view the flash until you dig into the browser's options and enable it.
IE: iphone
Cheers

It's overcoming these hurdles that I believe will progress mobilenet to becoming as widely used as the W3 is today..
Hence my 'calmness' about the whole timescale thing...
While everyone seems to worry themselves silly about not missing 'windows of opportunity' and getting dotmobi out there...
& winning hearts & minds..
I am of the belief that the mobilenet has a lot of progress to make before any such 'window of opportunity' may pass...
Another year, maybe more?
Do you think I'm misguided in this belief?
I'm speaking as a layman who still can't see the broad appeal of what the mobilenet is offering to most people as at 25th July 2008...
Give it a while longer - 2009 - maybe 2010...
I can really see the mobilenet being bigger than Television....
Adequate loading times, more apps, more content, less cost!
- every little helps..

I am a flash programmer too, and have a blackberry also with flashlite not enabled.
I am figuring that the next phone i buy wont have it either, but maybe the phone after that....
Thats 2010'ish i guess?.
But that is just us guys, and you can't design sites for the minority.
For the rank and file around the world, the billions of people with mobiles, then i think we are talking even longer?

Considering how quickly phones are replaced as compared to computers the expansion may happen quicker.
Depends on how successful Adobe is in getting it deployed.
But I agree it is not a solution for today for mobile but I'm going to be trying to figure out how to deploy it on some sites to those who can use it.

Flash light is an exciting application, but we are at the very baby step starting gate.
If a genius like Rob can't figure it out (those 15 minutes would equate to 3 hours for a mere mortal), what hope is there for the rest of us?
This of course begs the question of who are we designing the sites for, and what is our end goal?
If pay per click is the goal you will want to stay far away from this stuff.
North Americans and Europeans rarely click on ads, as opposed to the rest of the world who aren't going to have iPhones, I can tell you that.
If your end user is the techie crowd or the marketing crowd (they have every cool gadget, too), then go ahead and use flash light.
Now, for the SEO implications: yes, Google is going to start looking for content in flash.
I don't know how long it will take before they are able to do it effectively.
So, for the short term I'm not worried, and for the long term, well, I'll keep reading and learn all I can.

Can you connect the dots, why does flash nullify PPC?

What's to worry about?
I just see it as an opportunity to deliver rich content via mobile and still get indexed by the SE's.
With the typically minimal content in mobile I'd hate to be hiding any of it from the SE's.

Flash for mobile is a great idea, but as Rob has already stated, nearly all phones don't come with flash pre-enabled.
It is a pain in the arse to get it working ..
Hell I can't even upgrade my blackberry as it keeps crashing he pc which is pissing me off lol
I believe 3gp will be the norm for quite a long time but I am also keeping an eye on this http://www.coreplayer.com/?ref=matroska.org

Yes, I agree it is currently not a wide user base but it's coming.
If/when Apple adds it to the iPhone then it will happen all the quicker.
